vfulco··on Ask HN: What makes Medium a better/worse media outlet?
I love it personally. But banned in China so I can't use it to grow my Shanghai based professional services business. Huge bummer.
vfulco··on Don’t Know What to Do with Your Life? Seek Bargains (2012)
Weird, link broken
vfulco··on A Chinese Casino company has set out to take over the U.S. island of Saipan
Wonder if the headline was meant to stoke the fires shortly after the Maldives find themselves with the Chinese Navy in their waters and I assume India freaking out. The timing is uncanny.
vfulco··on Ask HN: What has HN given you?
Besides daily inspiration, I am constantly challenged and exposed to new tools I can bring into my professional services business. Some outstanding clients have found me in an indirect way after I offered a couple of unemployed readers a free resume review (one of our business lines). I was able to help others while growing my business even though pure marketing is verboten. It's an invaluable community of generally upbeat do-ers and visionaries.

vfulco··on China’s great leap forward in science
Two years into launching a professional services business creating English resumes, LinkedIn Profiles and academic essay editing in Shanghai, one of the toughest things to still adjust to is "only the results matter". I have turned away some clients due to their rudeness and outside of project scope demands. Fortunately this happens only 1-2x a year. They come back a few weeks later demanding the same but using fake names and slightly altered documents which I recognize immediately. There really is no "right" or "wrong" in their minds. Only what they want.
vfulco··on Reach for Markdown, not LaTeX
Really appreciate this piece. I have been doing more rmarkdown into pdf through pandoc/latex/etc. (yea its complicated but made much easy by the R community) for my English resume editing business. Still wading into Latex to customize docs feels like hieroglyphics. Seems made for grad students with too much time on their hands. The learning curve is steeper than I want or need to to be as an intermediate tool.

Addendum: I would really recommend crowd here look at rmarkdown flavored work. There are now a ton of community offerings for resumes/CV/theses even academic journal article templates. Most can be found on github.com and CRAN (the central repository for non-base packages).

vfulco··on Why Don't More Female Figure Skaters Wear Pants?
Maybe it isn't all about the skill?
vfulco··on Is FastMail reliable?
Really happy with its robustness. Able to access in mainland China which is nearly impossible unless using a domestic service. Now if only everyone would move to PGP.
vfulco··on FBI Says Chinese Operatives Active at Scores of U.S. Universities
Regardless of what side(s) you take, it really is a blessing and benefit of the US system, there can be an open, lively, and free discussion without comments or commentors disappearing as if a phrase would topple an entire system.
vfulco··on FBI Says Chinese Operatives Active at Scores of U.S. Universities
One of the services my company in Shanghai provides is review and final edit of applications, sometimes as a second check against what domestic (read non-native speaker) agencies have created. CC is seen as a stepping stone to 4 year degree schools. Usually it is rich kids who had no chance or inclination to pass the Chinese university entrance exam. Also many are told by the said agencies, it is the fast track to US citizenship. Most parents want a foothold in other countries as backup plan to get capital and themselves out of the PRC over time.
vfulco··on Chinese local governments rush to admit fake data
Gut feel, last year was negative growth from all the complaining of my foreigner friends (midlevel and higher execs) in SH
vfulco··on China's tech leaders have a thing for strange stage props

vfulco··on A Tiny Hedge Fund Made 8,600% on a Vix Bet
Good for them. It is so painful taking better than average bets and being questioned by family, friends, clients, peers. You even get caught second/third/fourth guessing yourself. Great story.
vfulco··on The Rise of China and the Fall of the ‘Free Trade’ Myth
Finally after the middle class in US has been hollowed out and everything that could be shipped over there was, we get the real story. There are scoundrels in (former) US government and industry who sold out this country lock, stock, barrel for their own greed.
vfulco··on Ask HN: 2018: What are the 2 most helpful software that you use in your life?
trello and zapier for my newish professional services business in Shanghai. I barely use them properly and they are allowing me to scale with 2 people and I am far from maxing out capabilities. Good for internal processes, client facing material, etc.
vfulco··on Get Ready for Most Cryptocurrencies to Hit Zero, Goldman Says

vfulco··on China's Surveillance State Should Scare Everyone
Haa, downvoted for speaking the truth. Got to love it. I am the polar opposite to the statement above (as in V for Vendetta) in philosophy but until the people demand change, why should we force western values onto their thing? Let them find the error of their ways in a cataclysmic way if that's what it takes. That's the historical record over millenia.
vfulco··on China's Surveillance State Should Scare Everyone
Silicon valley will always win; they strive for freedom and nobler reasons
vfulco··on Ask HN: Are you optimisic or pessimistic about the future?
I am pessimistic. Too many governments are not serving the people but only fighting hard to exist so those at the top can steal more from the people. Leaders, their friends and extended family members don't get to be billionaires doing the peoples' work. You know who you are, East and West.

Add in the electronic surveillance and reduction of free speech, movement, assembly and self-determination and we have completely lost the greatest ideals and growth drivers of civilization. The sheeple are being turned into the batteries depicted in the Matrix movie, nothing more. In this case, to serve the financial "masters" who hold debt for houses, cars, education, etc. over our heads and otherwise let government perpetuate their crimes in the shadows.

vfulco··on China's Surveillance State Should Scare Everyone
Given the amount of fraud and scams which abound, this may be the best system for them. It's the "People's Republic" after all. Let them decide what they want.
vfulco··on The Cheat Sheet I Wish I Had Before Building Our Zapier Integration

vfulco··on Economy to grow at 5.4%, Atlanta Fed
Who would have thunk? A businessman at the helm and the economy grows at its real potential. A stronger economy trickles down everywhere.
vfulco··on Ask HN: Why are there still recruiters?
A bit oblique but don't lose sight of a really well done LI Profile. I admit this is self-serving since I run a firm editing resumes, performing LI Profile enhancement and interview coaching in Shanghai, China. I am not selling here. However, I have had numerous clients with de-minimus LIPs and a bit stuck in their careers. They hired me to spruce theirs to "all-star" status. After turning on the "want to hear from interested parties setting", reaching out to old colleagues for referrals and building a broader network, they started hearing from HHers and HR who they would not have otherwise. And some found new work within the month.

It does work if you pull all the levers. You can CERTAINLY do your own LIP if you are willing to put the time in and have an acute eye for detail. It is an excellent investment to get it presentable.
