verusfossa··on Dockercraft: Manage Docker containers from Minecraft
I haven't done any Minetest modding, but I'm sure a pretty large part of that is due to the lack of a JVM. Forge can easily enough unpack the jar for clean enough source to plug into. C++ requires the Minetest devs themselves to guess what modders want to do and build Lua entrypoints. With the new Windows 10/Pocket edition of Minecraft being C++ as well, they'd have to do the same thing I would think.
verusfossa··on Dockercraft: Manage Docker containers from Minecraft
This is true. MeddleAPI[1] is the new hotness as it allows mods to be version-agnostic, however it's still early and there's little documentation. Mojang has been talking about potentially releasing some kit for modding for years, but with the C++ based "Minecraft Windows 10 Edition" out, I see little chance of that happening now.

I'm glad to see this though. I have been working on a file editor for minecraft[2] that might eventually work for keeping copies of docker logs, editing code or some such. Advanced VIM functions are not on my docket however. Baby steps.

Maybe more modders will move to mineTest if Microsoft/Mojang continues to sidestep the Minecraft modding community.

verusfossa··on FastMail: Shutting down our XMPP chat service
This is disappointing, but I don't really blame them. Thankfully, IMAP is too established to succumb to embrace, extend, extinguish although Google seems to be trying. Chat protocols haven't been so lucky.

Hopefully federated chat will pick up, but it seems business models around social networking pretty much preclude any kind of federated communication between services. If adoption rates for Diaspora, Friendica, Pump.io, GNUSocial etc. are any indication, XMPP looks doomed. :(

verusfossa··on Firefox OS 2.5 Developer Preview, an Experimental Android App
They could set up their own fdroid repo anyone could add to fdroid. Decentralization over an open protocol is a good thing. Guardian Project hosts their own and it's bundled, but there are a few private repos in the wild you can add today. It's similar to Ubuntu's third party sources or ppas. If big open companies started supporting it, maybe it would gain some steam. This would sidestep some of fdroid's official repo's more stringent requirements.

verusfossa··on Signal for Android: RedPhone and TextSecure in one app
Thanks for this! Seems to cover most of my bases. Secure, on F-Droid and gappsless. Here's hoping for a mainstream XMPP resurgence. Not holding my breath though. I had played with Jitsi before too, have to see how these compare.
verusfossa··on Signal for Android: RedPhone and TextSecure in one app
I'm pretty sure it requires gapps, although I did see a websockets version so not 100%. Also, keeping your own builds up to date is possible, but a hassle. For anyone else doing that https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=fr.kwiatkowski.A... is an easy way to ensure your apks are up to date without a repo store.
verusfossa··on Signal for Android: RedPhone and TextSecure in one app
TextSecure used to be on fDroid, then this happened https://f-droid.org/posts/security-notice-textsecure/. Now it's a GPlay exclusive. I don't have GAPPS so now I can't get it. I'd assume many privacy conscious people don't have GAPPS. I understand the technical hurtles, but it's too big a pill to swallow.
verusfossa··on How to Pick a Front End Web Framework
I recently tried to explain my setup to a friend and realized this is getting out of hand. I like the do one thing/pluggable UNIX philosophy as much as anyone, but saying "Typescript, tslint, gulp, jspm,Karma, mocha, chai, sinon, nightwatch, stylus, stylint, istanbul, react, skeleton, jsx, editorConfig, babel,Cordova" makes your head spin. Also getting them all to work together and play nice with sourcemaps and gulp tasks is a pain. Just setting up the tooling for the project BECAME the project. Sure it's IDE independent, pluggable and makes for clean development, but next week another thing will be shiny and I'll be doing more boilerplate. sigh
verusfossa··on Fifth Amendment Flowchart
I believe you have to explicitly state your right unfortunately, otherwise you lose it.

verusfossa··on FastMail is not required to implement the Australian metadata retention laws
I generally like Fastmail and the for pay model, but their Employee Access to Data section of their Privacy Policy seems to be a bit too cavalier. I may just be naive though.

PP:https://www.fastmail.com/about/privacy.html

Also, I feel they overstate the jurisdiction piece. Being in Australia is important, but it certainly doesn't make you a paragon of privacy or Australia a privacy Eden. Company culture is great, but a five-eyes becoming more surveillance-heavy by the day doesn't make the technical aspects of maintaining private communication any easier. I'd be wary not to oversell.

verusfossa··on Apple CEO Tim Cook: 'Privacy Is a Fundamental Human Right'
I would support something like an Fdroid repo for ipas and apks. It supports private repos. Every company having a repo you could simply add would be the best. Would fix trust and maintenance costs too since you control the repo list, they control the repo.

I can't see Apple or Google giving up the cash cow that is their respective garden though.

Apple supports CISA though which is pretty much poison to privacy...

verusfossa··on Help Test Private Browsing with Tracking Protection in Firefox Beta 42
I'm pretty far in the pro-user privacy camp, but I feel this conflates things unnecessarily and confuses the end user. Private browsing now keeps your local clean of history and site data on close, but also kind of does some other disconnect/ghostery stuff? If you're privacy conscious you've already tuned your browser, if you're not and believe private browsing does that, you're misinformed.
verusfossa··on Operating Systems: Three Easy Pieces
Sadly, I didn't have Remzi at UW although I heard he was a great professor. Our OS class used his book and I'd vouch for it in a heartbeat. Worth a read if you want digestible CS. I remember being most interested in the 'free' part as a broke college kid, but it turned out to be one of my favorite CS books.
verusfossa··on Markdown and LaTeX Editor
If you haven't seen it yet ProseMirror is a hopefully to be open-sourced CommonMark editor. I'm sure LaTeX support could be added as a module.

verusfossa··on Firefox 42 will not allow unsigned extensions
This is disappointing. Everything is becoming centralized, even Firefox extensions. I wish there was an opt out like "unknown sources" in android, but they keep saying we're not smart enough to make or own decisions. They won't even put one in about:config. This change well undoubtedly upset developers and other techy folk, exactly the kind of people you want working with your software.

Fdroid is working on third party repositories, maybe that will catch on to decentralize the mobile world a bit. Something like that for browser extensions would be sweet. Take a look at Fennec Fdroid for a cleaner Firefox mobile experience at least.

verusfossa··on Open Letter to Microsoft’s CEO: Don’t Roll Back the Clock on Choice and Control
Mozilla hasn't made me very happy lately with their "choice" tactics. Resetting people's default search engine to Yahoo of all things on update was very opaque. Also the AMO signing fiasco, Pocket and Hello. Feels like an "It's only okay when we do it" kind of thing.
verusfossa··on The Gluglug – GNU/Linux laptop with libreboot firmware
It's an m.2 unfortunately.
verusfossa··on Announcing TypeScript 1.5
What I would love to see is JSdoc annotations being output from the Ts->Js step. I already add types to everything, my api documentation should be simple to generate per function. Would be DRY and another feather in Typescript's cap IMHO. https://github.com/Microsoft/TypeScript/issues/10
verusfossa··on The Gluglug – GNU/Linux laptop with libreboot firmware
Looks like 4GB is it unless you want to shell out for a Pixel. http://prodct.info/chromebooks/#f&

Edit: Chart seems somewhat up to date at least, best I could find.

verusfossa··on The Gluglug – GNU/Linux laptop with libreboot firmware
I've been using a C720 Chromebook with custom SeaBios firmware and running Linux.

While not a beast, a Haswell i3 with 4GB isn't bad at the ~$300 price point. Throw in a 128GB ssd and it's good to go. It's been my daily driver as I'm unfortunately content with 'open enough' given the market.

Cool, reminds me of EGATrek an old dos space sim based on the Star Trek text game. Was really into it as a kid. Thanks for this and the nostalgia.
