Thanks.

Please stop repeating this lie that ZFS somehow needs ECC more then other filesystems.

All filesystems benefit from ECC memory but ZFS from all filesystems does its job best even without ECC.

Page 102 from https://is.gd/bsdstg here.

I'm getting bored repeating this over and over again.

Can you post a link to that Mini-ITX case? Thanks.

For example something like that:

https://vermaden.wordpress.com/2019/04/03/silent-fanless-fre...

It will provide you a ZFS mirror of two 5 TB 2.5 drives.

I repaste the table from the article for convenience.

    PRICE TIME SERVICE
     $447 5 YEAR(S) Self Build NAS
$567 5 YEAR(S) Self Build NAS (assuming one of the drives failed)
    $1500 5 YEAR(S) Amazon Drive
    $1550 5 YEAR(S) Google One
    $1200 5 YEAR(S) Amazon S3 Glacier Storage
    $2250 5 YEAR(S) Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage
vermaden··on Unbound DNS Blacklist
I do not use DoH and have it disabled in Firefox with network.trr.mode=5 in about:config page as described in the link [1] below.

[1] https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-dns-over-https

This way I get best of both worlds. Speed with NXDOMAIN and lack of needless CloudFlare DoH requests.

Hope that helps.

vermaden··on Unbound DNS Blacklist
Not sure which one is safer but I have read in many places that using NXDOMAIN is a lot faster then 127.0.0.1/0.0.0.0 because with NXDOMAIN you get 'fail' instantly while with 127.0.0.1/0.0.0.0 you need to wait for connection timeout.

Thanks for the link, will look into it.

vermaden··on Unbound DNS Blacklist
Thanks for PI-HOLE suggestion, pity its not available for FreeBSD, but still nice project.
vermaden··on Unbound DNS Blacklist
I did not had any earlier config so I started fresh but nothing stops you from using just the script for generating additional *.conf file for your current unbound(8) setup.

vermaden··on I am seriously considering going back to desktop computers
I used this type of keyboard for 3 years on ThinkPad W530.

Thought that I will get used to it. I kinda did but the first moment when I moved back to REAL 7-row keyboard was like driving a bike again. Its just so good I do not want to get back to anything other then that.

Maybe I will have two machines. One to type and one for other things ... or with external ThinkPad SK-8855 keyboard :)

Time will come, maybe I will do one last 'hop' with ThinkPad 25th Anniversary Edition ... if they will be available in several years ...

Thanks.

vermaden··on I am seriously considering going back to desktop computers
Not to even mention these shitty island type keyboards in all laptops.

From all features of pre 2012-NOW laptops the REAL KEYBOARD is what I miss the most.

I really hoped that Lenovo will make something more from its 25th Anniversary Edition ThinkPad (some name id T25) but from what I know only 5000 pieces were made and finito. Or ar least that Lenovo will PERMANENTLY provice a classic/retro ThinkPad with every new generation with REAL KEYBOARD.

That is why I still use 2011 ThinkPad W520 and ThinkPad X220 - to have REAL USABLE KEYBOARD with REAL PGUP/PGDN HOME/END INS/DEL keys block in the top right space.

Future looks very dark since years in the laptop space.

The more I look into laptop computing (and often computing in general) the more only single word stands out.

vermaden··on Oldschool Gaming on FreeBSD
Thanks :)
vermaden··on Oldschool Gaming on FreeBSD
Hi and thanks for very in depth comment and all these recommendations.

I have seen Dirt Rally 1/2 gameplay on YouTube and I really liked it. Unfortunately it will probably not run on FreeBSD ... and even if then my graphics card would not like it that much :)

I also read some good things about Divinity Original Sin, thanks for adding another small part to making me finally play this game sometime.

I will check other Zachtronics games as per your recommendation.

I played Age of Wonders about 17-18 years ago and I liked some of their concepts, I also liked Disciples 1 and 2 games. Also quite similar to Heroes of Might and Magic.

From the 'Tycoons' I played Transport Tycoon and Airline Tycoon. Also liked the first Theme Part and Theme Hospital.

Also first Portal was really nice.

Regards.

vermaden··on Oldschool Gaming on FreeBSD
Yes, that was the idea :)
vermaden··on Oldschool Gaming on FreeBSD
Depends.

I have tried some of newer games but often were very disappointed.

I have tried to play what Bethesda made as 'Fallout 3' but I really do not like it. Its just not Fallout and they should have chosen different name. I really like Fallout 1 and 2. I always disliked Fallout Tactics for what they have done to battle mechanics in 'turn based' mode (they broken it generally) but recently I even got to finish it and even started to like it a little, but not to the point to play it again.

I have similar thoughts with Heroes of Might and Magic III (especially with new Horn of the Abyss addon). I have tried Heroes IV and Heroes V but VERY disliked them. I still like Heroes IV music a lot but the mechanics of play are terrible.

From more modern games I really enjoyed playing Shadowrun Returns series.

I also plan to play these some day (in no particular order): - Art of Rally (as Colin McRae Rally 2.0 replacement) - Mewnbase - Wasteland 2 - Wasteland 3 - Dreamscaper - Pillars of Eternity (all of them I and II) - Expeditions: Viking - Pathfinder: Kingmaker - Disco Elysium - Into the Breach - Xenonauts - Opus Magnum - Metro Exodus - Invisible Inc.

vermaden··on Broot – A new way to see and navigate directory trees
Thank you, will look into them.
vermaden··on Linus: Don't Use ZFS
Typical Linus bullshit ...

"Don't use ZFS. It's that simple. It was always more of a buzzword than anything else, I feel, and the licensing issues just make it a non-starter for me."

Yeah, just use XFS or EXT4 without ANY data consistency ... you can use FAT32 also, similar level filesystem.

vermaden··on Broot – A new way to see and navigate directory trees
I really liked broot after using it for several minutes.

One of the downsides is that it calculates the space everytime with -s option which makes it slow in that mode.

If you seek for really fast tool for that purpose then try ncdu which calculates the sizes only once at start then then does that only on your request by pressing the 'r' key.

Here is how ncdu looks like:

vermaden··on Broot – A new way to see and navigate directory trees
Try Worker, it is as close to Directory Opus as possible.

Its available on FreeBSD so it must be available on Linux and macOS at least ... not sure about Windows.

vermaden··on Unbearable news
I looked for UNIX/BSD/Linux related news that would be really important, not just usual bullshit, pointless 'small' things or PR from companies.

... and I failed. I was not able to find one or several such news sources.

The nearest thing that I was able to find was 'In Other BSDs' series from https://www.dragonflydigest.com/ page, but it is very limited and small.

In all that I decided to create my own 'Valuable News' series, with latest (weekly) episode available here: https://vermaden.wordpress.com/2019/12/16/valuable-news-2019...

It may sound as shameless self promotion, but I really was not able to find such news source ...
