verall··on Gemini Robotics brings AI into the physical world
This is interesting because I think the opposite. What is amazing about Google seems to be their incredible ability to squander their lead in absolutely every area.

Maps used to be the absolute best and now I frequently get baffling driving directions in a US major metro area. No improvements within the last 10 years. New pixel phones are worse than latest Samsung. Some huge lead in AI absolutely totaled, their investment in anthropic their only hope. Inference HW accelerators that noone uses.

They are becoming like M$ - I expect M$ to be this terrible at product development - but at least M$ is fantastic at making money despite terrible products.

Google has allowed search experience to slide so much people would rather use some slow-ass unreliable chatbot. Are they really losing the war on SEO or have they decided that the internet-of-shit (i.e. affiliate marketing) is more valuable?

verall··on Reverse engineering OpenAI code execution to make it run C and JavaScript
I am personally finding Claude pretty terrible at C++/CMake. If I use it like google/stackoverflow it's alright, but as an agent in Cursor it just can't keep up at all. Totally misinterprets error messages, starts going in the wrong direction, needs to be watched very closely, etc.

In Europe? They can just take a train. Young people backpack all over Europe on shoestring budgets.

This is very interesting. Do you just not pay your income taxes?
verall··on "Uber for Armed Guards" Surges After UnitedHealthcare CEO Assassination
I believe the proper term is "guard labor".
verall··on I helped fix sleep-wake hangs on Linux with AMD GPUs
I think sleep/wake is a subset of cache invalidation - if all peripherals were stateless, probably it wouldn't be an issue.
verall··on Meta torrented & seeded 81.7 TB dataset containing copyrighted data
It's super dystopian and it creates bad incentives (the harder the underclass is squeezed the better a product it is for the middle class), but I have to agree that gig work is often a lifeline for poor people.

I consider it similar to access to unsecured credit that way - it's easy to feel like "wow this industry is scamming these people it should be illegal" but people without any other backstop will probably need access to unsecured credit sometime and it's better than losing their house/car/job/pet/family etc..

verall··on 20k federal workers take "buyout" so far, official says
> A fascist dictatorship? You still need a functioning government for that.

Not really, just a functioning police force.

verall··on F-strings for C++26 proposal [pdf]
Yes of course, and I mean it somewhat seriously - C++ engineers are used to the language being too complex for anyone to completely understand. It's worth some more incremental language complexity to support niceties like fstrings without additional overhead.
verall··on F-strings for C++26 proposal [pdf]
> Adding complexity to the language means there are more gotchas and edge-cases that a programmer must consider, even if they don't use the feature in question.

Since this is C++, this is not a problem we have to consider

verall··on The Origins of Wokeness
I'm having some trouble understanding, does "These people" refer to the David family referenced in the article, the Jane Minor community garden referenced, Rootwork Herbals mentioned, or some other group of people?

> some of them have told me that he's always been eccentric and hard to live with and some of them have tried to talk him out of his misbehavior to know avail

It sounds like the alleged crimes in the article are pretty rough to put up with, if it was your neighbor:

> David alleges Whittaker has vandalized her son's car, spray painted her fence, threateningly shot a BB gun in the air during a teen gardening session, removed sections of her fence and threatened to hit her son with a stick, among other offenses.

I wouldn't call that kind of behavior "eccentric", maybe antisocial. And if that behavior was directed mainly towards their black neighbor, I would call it racist.

verall··on Finland's zero homeless strategy (2021)
Population dropped 2019-2020, but population has increased each year since 2020, both in Austin proper and austin greater metro area. Housing prices increased until about 2022 when they started dropping, and (along with rent) have been trending downwards since.

If your point is, "construction has to outstrip population increase in order to decrease prices", then well, yeah, we agree fully.

If your point is that huge amounts of new units going on the market in Austin does not have a significant impact on prices, I don't think that's supported by any evidence or makes any sense.

verall··on Finland's zero homeless strategy (2021)
Looking at the population of Austin proper is pretty silly here, and similar just looking at Travis. The city proper lost population from 2019-2020 as many cities did during the early pandemic, but grew each year since. The Austin metro area has grown every one of these years.

In every comparable city in the country, housing prices are up. In Austin, they are down.

verall··on Finland's zero homeless strategy (2021)
What about Austin, where they have aggressively upzoned and built, and now housing prices are down?
verall··on I got OpenTelemetry to work. But why was it so complicated?
We absolutely have to run it ourselves (...corporate reasons...), it's a lightweight service with only a few hundred users so we haven't had to worry much about perf (yet).

SigNoz does look interesting, I may give this a shot, thank you. I'm a bit concerned about it conflicting with other things going on in our docker-compose but it doesn't look too bad..

verall··on I got OpenTelemetry to work. But why was it so complicated?
So recently I needed to this up for a very simple flask app. We're running otel-collector-contrib, jaeger-all-in-one, and prometheus on a single server with docker compose (has to be all within the corpo intranet for reasons..)

Traces work, and I have the spanmetrics exporter set up, and I can actually see the spanmetrics in prometheus if I query directly, but they won't show up in the jaeger "monitor" tab, no matter what I do.

I spent 3 days on this before my boss is like "why don't we just manually instrument and send everything to the SQL server and create a grafana dashboard from that" and agh I don't want to do that either.

Any advice? It's literally the simplest usecase but I can't get it to work. Should I just add grafana to the pile?

How will it be a brutal lesson in youthful ignorance and stupidity when the youth have nearly no political power? We have a full-on gerontocracy and the problem is youthful naivete?
verall··on The RAM Myth
Windows starts doing awful things under slight memory pressure like 80% usage.

There are cascading failures like high ram usage -> swap+compression -> power+thermal limits -> desktop responsiveness is unreasonably bad (i.e. >5 minutes to open task manager to kill a single firefox.exe using >10G memory caused by a single misbehaving javascript among many tabs)

This is an incredibly common scenario for laptops that cost less than $1000.

Free memory means things will probably not go to shit in the next 10 minutes.

Linux is a whole different story with different sharp edges.

verall··on FTC bans hidden junk fees in hotel, event ticket prices
If you go to a donqi the price tags list without the tax besides small text that either lists the full price or says "+10% consumption tax" or along those lines.

As a tourist you don't always have to pay the consumption tax though.

verall··on Germany's 49-euro ticket resulted in significant shift from road to rail
At this rate I would be surprised if the Texas HSR is complete before 2050. Texas has not come to terms with anything. I say that as a resident for the last 10 years.
verall··on Germany's 49-euro ticket resulted in significant shift from road to rail
TxDOT does not maintain local or county roads which are a massive portion of cost in sprawl.

Most of the new territories is not highly developed. Kowloon and hk island are both entirely urban.
verall··on A dishwasher can make or break a restaurant (2017)
I'm not sure what your point is - most people will go extreme distances to avoid becoming homeless:

- commuting from a lower cost area >60m away

- using food banks or not paying less critical bills (like utilities you usually have a few months before they start shutting things off)

- begging or selling themselves on the internet

- negotiating with their landlord who is often happy to have less money than an onerous eviction

None of these are positive things - they all have nasty negative externalities. Jobs that give money but not enough at all to live on leave desperate people in a terrible limbo.

verall··on A dishwasher can make or break a restaurant (2017)
> Why would anyone take the job then, if it didn't provide those things?

Because they are afraid of being homeless?

verall··on Y292B Bug
I can't really tell if this is a sort of satire or joke?

It seems to implement BigInts as BCD where each decimal digit gets it's own int32, implements division, then suggests kernel upstreaming. All as a solution for arbitrary spans of time.

verall··on US prosecutors recommend Justice Department criminally charge Boeing
I'm not advocating for less regulation in the slightest.

I'm saying that when a corpo breaks laws (don't follow regulations and lie about it), the fines need to substantially hit their shareholders, so that shareholders are generally aligned with following regulations and will demand additional diligence. Otherwise the game will be as it is - commercial aviation is highly regulated, but Boeing is so big that the fines don't matter to them or their owners (i.e. shareholders).

verall··on US prosecutors recommend Justice Department criminally charge Boeing
I think that however flawed, capitalism might prevail here. If enough money was on the line, institutional investors might get actual permission to [hire experts to] enter the assembly floor and do spot checks. Not welcoming such a thing would cause a huge stock hit. etc.
