velik_m··on The dead economy theory
I can easily see a two tiered justice: a human judge for those who can afford it, and AI judge for rest of us plebs.
velik_m··on How many products does Microsoft have named 'Copilot'?
It's called Microsoft 365 Copilot now. Maybe that will help.

The federal entity Yugoslavia ceased to exists, but the borders are actually the same as they were in socialist Yugoslavia.
velik_m··on Could the Soviet Union have survived?
It was not bloodless and Gorbachev did send tanks and army into breakaway republics [1][2][3], the soviet union was simply too weak to do anything to stop the movements to break away from Russia. Russia even lost the war with Chechnya in early 90s, which shows just how weak they were. It wasn't until the west helped rebuild Russian economy (mostly based on fossil fuels) that they were able to revive their imperialistic ways under Putin.

velik_m··on Paradise Lost: How Tourists Are Destroying the Places They Love
> Is this sarcasm? The existence of guidebooks, in itself, ensures that multiple people will do what the guide says. A "better" guidebook will just ruin those "better" experiences too.

That assumes the guidebook is the same for everyone. In today's world of smartphone apps it's not hard to imagine a "personalized" guidebook for each tourist. You could even take it a step forward and make it fully dynamic and "re-route" tourists based on site congestion - sort of like Waze for tourists.

velik_m··on Big Oil Companies Should Adopt a Self-Liquidation Strategy
Maybe because most countries are running deficits - they would have to take out additional loans. I guess it's the same reason poor people buy crappy shoes instead of investing into quality long-term footwear - too many current problems to think of long-term solutions far in the future.

velik_m··on Mark Zuckerberg's plan for the future of Facebook
It means a world where privacy is reserved only for the rich and the powerful.

There is no secret. People who do more observing tend to be more observant. Talk and type less and watch and listen more and in a decade or two you will be able to figure out other people's character pretty fast.

Hey now, as a member of European Union, i am quite happy to refer to myself as Nobel Peace Prize winner.
velik_m··on Met Office loses BBC weather forecasting contract after 93 years
It's not just about the number of sensors. The clouds form over the sea. Predicting when and where those clouds will form is much harder than predicting when and where those clouds will move.

I find the analogy slightly ironic, since the best driver in formula 1 is indeed determined not only by his own skill, but also on the basis of his car quality.
velik_m··on Why Does Spain Have the World's Highest Concentration of Elevators?
Yes this bothered me too, so i checked: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Housing_in_Europe, with that kind of doctoring of data for the sake of the story, how can we trust the rest of the data?
velik_m··on Always bet on text
I agree, the wikipedia example is especially strained, sure you can not represent that sentence clearly in picture, but can you represent Mona Lisa or Beethoven's 5th in text? Different types of representations are used for different things, sometimes they overlap and one is more efficient than the other and yes text has been pretty useful.
velik_m··on If SaaS Products Sell Themselves, Why Do We Need Sales?
The problem with big businesses is that even if the organisation needs and wants to cut costs, its smaller organizational units often have little incentive to do so. So the push for a new cheaper solution has to come from above, which means you have to sell the product to "higher ups" and not to the people who will be using the product. Of course that means the sales people and cheapness of product are then more important than the actual quality of product, which I guess is why there are so many crappy products in the big enterprises in the first place.
velik_m··on Reasons Not To Raise Venture Capital
I think that would be probably better put as "Not raising venture capital doesn't make you a bad person", but that doesn't sound quite as good.

It's not such much what they left out, it's what they put focus on: quick and fast examples, which is what people mostly want (the "Try it Yourself" is also a huge plus here). If i want more detailed docs, i'm more than willing to scroll down the page.
