veilrap··on Oregon school cell phone ban: 'Engaged students, joyful teachers'
Personally, playing with the graphing and algebra functions on the calculator were hugely informative. Rapidly trying out different things, seeing how they looked how tweaking things would cause adjustment, all added educational value.

I feel like graphing calculators enable exploration in a way that doing it manually with pen and paper cannot. Obviously, pen and paper is super valuable as well, but I feel that they are complimentary.

veilrap··on I haven't used a mouse for 14 years
I exclusively use trackpads like Magic Trackpad 2 when I'm on MacOS. But I exclusively use a mouse when I'm running Windows and Linux.

MacOS just seems more tailored to the touchpad experience. Windows and Linux more tailored to the mouse experience.

veilrap··on Rebasing in Magit
If you haven’t seen it you may want the fugitive plugin for vim. It seems to give a reasonable level of git magic within vim. Maybe not as magic as magit, but it does a lot including good handling of interactive rebases.
veilrap··on Parallel coding agents with tmux and Markdown specs
Upgrades, API compatibility, and cross version communication are really important in some domains. A bad design can cause huge pain downstream when you need to make a change.
veilrap··on State of the Fin 2026-01-06
Ah! I didn't realize that the official client's page was filtered by "recommended" by default.

I wonder why the officially developed SwiftFin isn't shown as recommended? I guess maybe because it's still considered beta.

veilrap··on State of the Fin 2026-01-06
The fact that Jellyfin lacks a AppleTV/tvOS app seems like it continues to make it a dealbreaker... at least for my setup.

I hear people recommending clients like Infuse, but it feels odd to swap out Plex at this point if I can't go all in on the open source side of things.

Am I missing something here wrt Jellyfin clients? I guess I could try running it side-by-side with Plex and see how it goes.

veilrap··on Why are 38 percent of Stanford students saying they're disabled?
100%, it's one of the irksome things about the education system in general - resources are limited. It's a hard problem to solve.
veilrap··on John Carmack on mutable variables
He’s implying that the variable it’s being defined within the loop. So, constant, but repeatedly redefined.
veilrap··on Show HN: DIY virtual HDMI monitor using "AR" glasses
I'm curious how/what you use the screens via AR for if you're not using environment locked screens. Particularly in a productivity/work environment.

Unless I'm misunderstanding the feature, it seems like enironment locked screens allows for more natural usage and interactions with the screens in the virtual space?

My experience is mostly with VR/AR products like Oculus has been mostly with environment locked AR information.

veilrap··on C++26: more constexpr in the core language
I always like these new comile time features getting into the C++ spec.

I'm actually looking forward to the related reflection features that I think are currently in scope for C++26. I've run into a number of places where the combination of reflection and constexpr could be really valuable... the current workarounds often involving macros, runtime tricks, or both.

veilrap··on Cross Views
This is why I never do the cross-eyed version of focusing on these. For me that's always been uncofortable.

Using the parallel view, or focusing out beyond the picture to make the images converge has always been easier and more comfortable for me.

veilrap··on Avoid ISP Routers (2024)
I'm surprised by this, is Comcast super regional with it's restrictions? I have a Comcast 1gig plan in the Bay Area, and last I checked I get a small ($5?) discount for using my own modem. I've been on the plan for a least a few years now... so alternatively maybe I'm grandfathered in or something? Or maybe some Comcast sales person was lying to you about your options?
veilrap··on macOS Sequoia is available today
iOS isn’t killing OOM apps. It’s killing inactive apps. It’s something that wouldn’t fly on a desktop or server OS under general use, but works reasonably well in the mobile space.
veilrap··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
That doesn't work if core apps start moving to third party app stores.
veilrap··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
This is a facetious argument. The usage needs of my phone are different than the usage needs of my laptop / desktop computers.
veilrap··on Noisy brain may underlie some of autism's sensory features
Yeah, this is my worry about autism research/diagnosis as well. When/If we lump together what are actually a number of different underlying causes it makes it a lot more challenging to come up with strategies for treatment.
veilrap··on Modeless Vim
Vim has pretty good support of the lsps and tree sitters that code does (at least for the languages I’ve used), I actually have a mirrored configuration between the two to simplify when I want to jump from one to the other. :)

veilrap··on "<ESC>[31M"? ANSI Terminal security in 2023 and finding 10 CVEs
Windows might even support 3 if you count cmd and powershell separately :lolsob:
veilrap··on The Future of the Vim Project
As some one who only uses vim/neovim in a terminal window - what’s the advantage of having GUI support in vim?

Mouse support in my terminal seems fine, even over ssh. Being able to do things like run it inside of a tmux session has always made it seem like the GUI would be a step back?

veilrap··on Alcohol without the hangover – scientists are finding ways
I’m pretty sure “Synthol” in Star Trek is more of a synthetic alcohol alternative of unspecified chemical composition, rather than just synthetic alcohol.
veilrap··on Windows 95 tips, tricks, and tweaks (2013)
I've also had a great time installing Windows 95 into a DOSBox instance. Might be even easier than a full fledged VM.
veilrap··on Apollo will close down on June 30th
Same boat. It's going to be pretty trivial to stop browsing reddit once Apollo is gone. I'll probably still read links through google search from time to time, but it'll be a 99% reduction in usage for me.
veilrap··on 916 Days of Emacs
I think this sort of defense of EMacs misses a key point: most people have no interest in running a browser, email, chat, etc. from within their text editor.

Generally people prefer to do those sorts of things with specialized applications that are more tailored towards those individual use cases.

veilrap··on GM plans to phase out Apple CarPlay in EVs, with Google's help
Yeah, bluetooth for things like YouTube music works fine, but it's not as streamlined - e.g. you have to do searching on the phone.
veilrap··on Wi Flag (2002)
I love the "lore" that this sort of bug creates, especially in these sorts of large scale multiplayer environments.

Players claiming to be cursed, and the curse was real!

A very different sort of event that it reminds me of is the old World of Warcraft plague: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corrupted_Blood_incident

veilrap··on History of Video Games (1940's – 2010's) – list of firsts
I feel like there's some notable omissions like:

- Online multiplayer

- MMO

- VR / AR with headtracking

- Generated Worlds

veilrap··on Why I Like Nox
I also only clicked on this link because I assumed it was Nox (the game).
veilrap··on Why I Like Nox
I had a huge amount of fun playing this when it came out. It was a little clunky, and very quirky, but it had a lot of good ideas in it.

I wish it had been more successful in the market.

veilrap··on Apple’s Mac security is so good, it’s sending used M1 MacBooks to the scrap heap
There should be a tiny (a couple minutes at most) amount of friction for the transfer of $1000s of dollars worth of property.

Activation lock doesn't prevent resale, it prevents theft.
