veemjeem··on Introducing Swift
I guess it depends what country you're currently in. I know some chinese developers would prefer some chinese characters because it happens to be the ones available on their keyboard.
veemjeem··on Is It Better to Rent or Buy?
So I live in rent controlled area in the bay area where I pay around $1500 for a 2 bedroom. Using this calculator, it seems like buying almost any kind of home in the bay area would be a very bad decision.
veemjeem··on Microsoft announces the Surface Pro 3
Not sure I understand your post. I use vim everyday with copy & paste on my mac. Maybe the commands are slightly different than when ssh'ed into some box, but us vim users are capable of remembering many obscure keystrokes.
veemjeem··on Write Code, Crush Foes, Get Hired – Multiplayer Programming Tournament
Yeah, I don't like the trend of eye-catching false advertisements either. In a way, this resembles those infomercials that give you a bunch of random stuff along with the core product and then claim that it's a $500 value that you're getting for free!

I would think that they'd want to attract those coders who are not directly interested in cash prizes because anyone with half a brain could tell that the prizes do not match the original $40k advertisement. If you're advertising to a bunch of smart developers, don't treat them like idiots who buy into infomercial style advertising scams. These guys should reconsider spinning the contest as a fun & challenging way to top the leaderboard, and the prizes are just a small token of appreciation for attending the contest.

veemjeem··on Google ruling 'astonishing', says Wikipedia founder Wales
This must suck for any startup operating out of the EU. Would this mean that anyone can request anything to be removed from the internet if the company operates out of the EU? It's hard to determine if a given piece of information is "private" or not. This would make it nearly impossible to run any kind of web startup from the EU.
veemjeem··on Tesla Q1 earnings report [pdf]
down 6% isn't exactly a falling knife scenario though.
veemjeem··on Supreme Court to hear arguments on Aereo this week
Not just that, the antennae are located closer to the transmission source so you don't need your own antenna on some rooftop. Quality is higher since it just gets streamed to your location. It's kind of like having an antenna on the top of your own roof, and then using something like mythtv as the dvr to stream the content to your current location (which could be far away from home).
veemjeem··on SF’s Housing Crisis Explained
Unfortunately the tech sector is fairly well paid so we are the least likely to move since we will gain the least from a move, whereas middle-income wage earners will gain the most from a move since they'll be able to afford rental units that won't cost them 90% of their monthly wages. The middle-wage earners are significantly less mobile since their profession is likely to be deeply rooted in their current location. They are feeling much more of the pain than people in the tech sector.

Most of us in the tech sector are young and single and least likely to go house hunting, so the expensive housing is painful for us, but probably affects us the least.

veemjeem··on Bitcoin promoter Shrem indicted in NY for money laundering
I would think that it was traced via bitcoin, not pgp.
veemjeem··on Apple declines to join Microsoft in funding patent troll Intellectual Ventures
That title would still be inaccurate because it would imply that Apple is currently funding IV, and will not increase their funding. Just because Apple gave them money in the past doesn't mean they are continuing to fund them either.

It just seems to me that you have difficulty accepting other commenter's criticisms and would rather just believe that you've been right all along. Why is it that many hackers have this superiority complex that causes them act like this? I see this type of scenario in our industry all the time. Hackers would rather see themselves as correct from a different angle rather than accepting fault seen from everyone else's perspective.

veemjeem··on E-Go: A sub-$1000 electric longboard
I fail to see similarities between boosted's logo and e-go's logo. They are so incredibly different. E-go's logo looks more similar to ubuntu's logo, so one could argue that boosted borrowed their style from ubuntu?
veemjeem··on E-Go: A sub-$1000 electric longboard
I don't think boosted invented their style of board. I've seen many long boards that have their exact style. I guess if you've only seen boosted first, you'd think everyone is ripping off from boosted.
veemjeem··on Imgur Raises $40M From Andreessen Horowitz
imgur is not almost as bad as conventional image hosts. I guess you haven't used any conventional ones lately that block the image after bandwidth exceeded? Also, most of the other ones are even more spammy than imgur. Imgur still allows direct linking of the image and has less ads than most of the competition.
veemjeem··on Brendan Eich Steps Down as Mozilla CEO
People change too. You can't hold it against someone all their life because they donated $1000 to prop 8. For the rest of his life, people will look at Eich differently simply due to the small donation amount many decades ago.
veemjeem··on Genetic Algorithms Produce Winning StarCraft II Build Order (2010)
Maybe the search space is limited in the first few minutes of the game when your opponent has also has a limited set of moves, but as the game goes on, the complexity increases exponentially. The 7 roach rush could be calculated here because the algorithm essentially completes when it reaches 7 roaches, but longer more complicated builds would be significantly harder -- like a 2-base blink all-in.
veemjeem··on Genetic Algorithms Produce Winning StarCraft II Build Order (2010)
Many stochastic methods get around the local optima problem with various techniques. The simplest one is just to pick another random place to start climbing.
veemjeem··on Gbatteries (YC W14) Launches BatteryBox, A 50Whr Backup Battery For MacBooks
Since they filed a patent on it, I assume it is new tech. There is new charging tech from time to time, but most of the IP belongs to those big semiconductor companies, like TI. I know TI has an innovative power management module for LiPoly batteries, but it is pretty expensive.
veemjeem··on Openssl: uses only 32 bytes (256 bit) for key generation
In general, discussion about encryption is usually bad because most people don't understand all the underlying principles of encryption. Encryption is something everyone uses so everyone has an opinion on it, but very very few people understand its implementation. When you have a blog post about encryption, 99% of the people commenting on it probably won't be making the right kind of comment.
veemjeem··on Tesla Completes L.A.-to-New York Electric Model S Drive Chargers
They do this to increase adoption, but it would probably still reduce the life of the battery. I doubt people would use their supercharger every day unless they happened to live next door to one. Their purpose of the supercharger network is to reduce the whole "distance-fear" that EVs have.
veemjeem··on Tesla Completes L.A.-to-New York Electric Model S Drive Chargers
There are many other companies besides tesla who offer public charging, like Blink & Chargepoint. Tesla owners can still recharge their vehicles at these stations even though the charge rate is probably slower.
veemjeem··on How I “hacked” Kayak and booked a cheaper flight
I wonder if they're doing price elasticity experiments? You could get a slightly cheaper price by getting a different cookie set.
veemjeem··on NavSpark: Arduino Compatible with GPS GNSS Receiver
is it? the attiny85 is still marketed as being arduino compatible, but with only 6 i/o pins, it is nothing like any other arduino product.
veemjeem··on London's first pay-per-minute cafe
If you were really poor, a bread machine is probably the easiest & cheapest way to make bread. It comes out to be around 25 cents a loaf, and you can control how much you want to make per batch. You only really need yeast and flour. However, the $25 bread machine is a small investment required.
veemjeem··on Mac Pro Teardown 2: Teardown Harder
So that's why macs are more expensive! Maybe there's a gold bar tucked away in your macbook pro right now.
veemjeem··on New App Lets You ‘Assassinate’ People in Real Life
I doubt this idea was ever "stolen". It's such a simple game that I'm sure there have been hundreds of variants ever since the start of the computer revolution.
veemjeem··on Hire this guy for love
Right, it also shows that simple personalized honesty is probably better than marketing stunts that portray something incredible. This reminds me of those tear-jerker google ads, like the "Dear Sophie" one.
veemjeem··on Hire this guy for love
Sure it is, but would you have the same visibility as this? You could also say that couchsurfing.com existed long before airbnb, but airbnb is vastly more popular. Creativity comes in different forms.

Setting up a profile on oDesk means you'll be competing with all the firms in India who say they can do the same job for just under 10 cents an hour.

veemjeem··on Hire this guy for love
Didn't that YC company, Markupwand, do something like this automatically? Since they've vanished, I wonder if this problem is hard to do automatically?

Photoshop CS6 has this feature built-in, but it generates horrible css -- it reminds me of the days when people used Dreamweaver to output their html.

veemjeem··on MacStadium: Dedicated Mac Pro Hosting and Colocation
I think if you're planning on running a business of OSX machines, you probably shouldn't rely on hackintosh stuff. Upgrading the OS on hackintosh is pretty painful.
veemjeem··on Rex – palm-sized, single-board computer for DIY robots
You might want to check out ROS from the willow garage people. It's probably the right tool that you're looking for.
