vdaniuk··on Bitcoin: A Proxy for Users
Googling "hero image" yields the answer in less time than writing a comment on HN.
vdaniuk··on How the Survivor Bias Distorts Reality
Entrepreneurs != startup founders.

A successful developer, for example, starting their consultancy/agency has a high chance of building a successful venture.

vdaniuk··on Economic Inequality
>Capitalist wealth comes from repeated consensual and mutually beneficial transactions.

Tech hiring collusion, 2008 financial crisis, environment degradation and global warming, slavery-like conditions at suppliers of multinational corporations, medical bankruptcies in US and lack of guaranteed holidays, ghettos, plundering of natural resources, monopolies everywhere (as prescribed by Thiel btw).

Such a wonderful, mutually beneficial, ethical system with so many positive externalities! /s

You may claim that capitalism is the "best" system at this point, but to state that's wonderful is indeed indistinguishable from parody.

vdaniuk··on Economic Inequality
Poe's law invoked.
vdaniuk··on Concepts for Your Cognitive Toolkit
>It makes it look like you're gaining something from it.

I object to the implicit assumption that "gaining" from sharing valuable content (corrected for conflicts of interests) is immoral or bad.

I would venture forth and suggest that community of developers should strive to increase financial and other "gains" of independent developers to counter centralization of megacorporates.

vdaniuk··on A Requiem for Ian Murdock
I had been a lurker for ~2 years and a registered user for ~3 years, so about ~5 years in total. I don't believe that HN adequately represents either independent developers, non-corporate FOSS community or web developers ("JS hipsters").
vdaniuk··on Did a Single Hacker, not Anonymous, cripple Turkey's Internet?
I am sure you'll be able to provide reliable citations to authoritative sources supporting these curious claims, right?
vdaniuk··on Show HN: Scaffold App for Node.js, Express, Jade, Passport, MongoDB, Bootstrap
Inertia aka traction is very powerful in tech. Consider that all these negative articles do not percolate to various semi-isolated communities and groups.
vdaniuk··on I thought all anti-vaxxers were idiots. Then I married one
Medicine is usually right and only sometimes wrong, but alternative medicine is usually wrong and only sometimes right. The fact that medicine can be spectacularly or trivially wrong doesn't provide any inputs for change of personal healthcare strategy.
vdaniuk··on I thought all anti-vaxxers were idiots. Then I married one
>both medicine and the science behind drugs have been spectacularly wrong more than once

On the other hand, non-medicine (alternative medicine) and non-science (pseudoscience) have been spectacularly right more than once. That's the point. Agree with empathy angle and need for emotional arguments, though.

vdaniuk··on Hard Truths about Equity
>You are passionate about the mission

How come? No, in all seriousness, mission is secondary to growth for startups, isn't it? If you are passionate about the mission, shouldn't you join a non-profit?

vdaniuk··on So You Want to Write Your Own Language (2014)
>Is your productivity dramatically increased by the choice of required separators? Of course not.

Yes, for me it does. A large amount of symbols on screen makes my mind drift away and it gets harder to concentrate on the flow and meaning of code. Semicolons or lisp parens are good examples of such visual noise. While productivity decrease is not drastic, it's noticeable. The mind adjusts and this problem diminishes with time and practice of the particular syntax but it's still present.

vdaniuk··on Sued Over Old Debt, and Blocked from Suing Back
An interesting fact: Marvin Heemeyer, the bulldozer guy, is a hero and a role model for a significant number of people (at least in social networks) in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.
vdaniuk··on Skier almost hit by camera drone in World Cup slalom
This is very relevant to your comment. "In social psychology, the fundamental attribution error, also known as the correspondence bias or attribution effect, is the tendency for people to place an undue emphasis on internal characteristics (personality) to explain someone else's behavior in a given situation rather than considering the situation's external factors."

vdaniuk··on Fira Code: monospaced font with programming ligatures
I have been using Fira Code font with Atom for some time and I am absolutely in love with the aesthetics. All credit and praise goes to http://tonsky.me/
vdaniuk··on What You Believe Affects What You Achieve
>We could recapture this lost value with a universal basic income

In absolute agreement. UBI may unlock extreme growth of efficiency by enabling risk taking without risk of total defeat.

>Lets also not forget that if you can't make money off lifesaving drugs, you also won't bother to invent any new ones

Citation needed. Extremely needed.

vdaniuk··on What the web platform can learn from Node.js: The Darwinism of small modules
>Slack and Atom are slow, resource hogging and unstable piles of crap

Atom is my primary editor and I am extremely satisfied with it. Your self-righteous arrogant attitude is strange and has nothing to do with objective, rational criticism.

vdaniuk··on Your Most Valuable Asset Is Yourself
>People do not learn by reading

If that is true your comment is utterly useless to anyone reading it.

vdaniuk··on Podcasting is getting huge
Yes, please! Let's make bootstrapping and indie projects as hard as possible by placing advertising control solely in the hands of large corporations that have means and resources to fight adblocking.
vdaniuk··on Koel: A personal music streaming server
thanks!
vdaniuk··on Koel: A personal music streaming server
Spotify radio is the worst recommendation system I've ever used in any software product ever. It's just that bad and my music tastes are not really esoteric. Do you have any suggestions for music discovery?
vdaniuk··on Rapidoid – No-Bullshit Web Framework for Java
>prevented tons of PHP, Ruby, Python, etc frameworks

Django is adding websockets support using the $150K grant from Mozilla. Rails is adding websockets support in the next version with ActionCable. Phoenix and Play frameworks have great support for websockets. Websockets are an integral part of node ecosystem.

Your websockets "challenge" is not based on facts.

vdaniuk··on Rapidoid – No-Bullshit Web Framework for Java
>Why does a framework have to carry features only needed in edge cases?

Because most apps are being built in the conditions of uncertainty and the development team doesn't know if the edge case will become a business requirement.

>Feature bloat/mission creep sucks.

Unqualified, this statement is nothing more than a thought terminating cliche. Whatever constitutes "bloat" depends on the context and preferences of a decision maker.

vdaniuk··on Rapidoid – No-Bullshit Web Framework for Java
The subject of the discussion is required features of frameworks, not apps.
vdaniuk··on Rapidoid – No-Bullshit Web Framework for Java
That's not what they said. Not every web app needs to be a single page app, that's true but it's a non sequitur.

The point was that if a new framework aims to capture enough attention and traction to be a sustainable alternative to the incumbents it has to support websocket .

vdaniuk··on How Jefferson and other Founding Fathers defended Muslim rights
>Check your PC bullshit

Come on, it's an anonymous troll account with an obvious goal of ridiculing pro-PC argument. Check your #{x}!

vdaniuk··on Next generation of Google Cloud SQL
I don't disagree.
vdaniuk··on Firefox OS Pivot to Connected Devices
It seems that sync engine was AGPL licensed from the start https://github.com/nylas/sync-engine/blob/master/LICENSE
vdaniuk··on Next generation of Google Cloud SQL
I've been considerably dissatisfied with AWS lately, namely their lack of real customer support for billing issues and was shopping around for a Postgres provider. http://databaselabs.io seems to be a good choice if you're looking for AWS alternative.
