vampirechicken··on Defending our open-plan office
The effects of "collaborative office spaces" on the companies accounting system are well understood. It is cheaper to buy or lease cubicles or (heaven help up) put plywood on saw horses, then it is to get enough space then subdivide and construct offices. One is written off as furniture, the other is physical plant, and depreciates at a far slower rate.

Sometimes it's about the ability to see if you're at your sewing machine making garments, but the motives are nearly always financial.

vampirechicken··on An Aspiring Scientist’s Frustration with Modern-Day Academia
A marxist critique of community college.
vampirechicken··on Tesla is unable to sell its vehicles directly to the public in Texas
The state laws tend to not only make using a dealership mandatory, but make it nigh impossible to sever the relationship once established.

That's why so many horrible dealerships are allowed to continue operating.

vampirechicken··on Here is a puzzle entitled "lowercase"
furrfu!
vampirechicken··on Let's remove verbs from HTTP 2.0
GET, POST, and HEAD are the only ones used because since time immemorial, they've been the only ones implemented by the browsers (NN, IE, FF, etc.).

I posit that if Netscape had implemented PUT, we'd all be talking about the four main verbs, instead of the three main verbs.

vampirechicken··on Bots Gobble Up Restaurant Reservations in the Bay Area
If a restaurant can be fully booked sixty days in advance, they aren't goign to care who's making the reservations, as long as butts are in seats and bills get paid at the end of the meal.
vampirechicken··on How YouPorn Uses Redis: SFW Edition
The target demographic of a computer language is people who program computers. Python is as old as Perl. Ruby, at a spry 20, is only five years younger than Perl. Java is pushing 20 and JavaScript is not far behind.

Are you suggesting that when Mats created Ruby, he was thinking to himself, "I can't wait for the all the first graders to grow up and use my language?"

I rather think that the creators of computer languages think in terms of present, rather than future computer programmers, and not in terms of "My language will make all the Beliebers want to become software engineers."

Something is "dead" when the youth no longer care about it? Get off my lawn.
vampirechicken··on How Lorem Ipsum Makes Web Projects Fail
You had me agreeing with you until the last line.

If you, as a designer, view content that changes over time as "nasty" and the "need to accommodate that" as a burden, then I'd appreciate you announce your full name here, so that we can avoid you and and other designers who think you're creating oil paintings or sculptures.

vampirechicken··on White House Seems Afraid NSA Defunding Law Could Actually Pass Today
And it was neither. Corporate lobbyists win again.
vampirechicken··on White House Seems Afraid NSA Defunding Law Could Actually Pass Today
Does the Senate ordinarily fillibuster appropriations bills?

The Senate still has their secret, hands-free fillibuster. This one could die in the senate, or be the bill that forces the Dems to change the Senate's fillibuster rules.

vampirechicken··on The 2005 screenwriting book that’s taken over Hollywood
The write lost me completely when he complained about the main character of the Oz movie being the main character of the book on which it's based.

That's just stupid. I want my three minutes back.

vampirechicken··on Nobody will Train You but You | webapplog
You can find the original via railsconf. The video is of Zach Briggs. Webapplog is merely linkjacking the content to try to sell stuff.
vampirechicken··on A Change in License for Berkeley DB
So the problem, if I understand it correctly, is that you want to create a commercial product out of free building blocks, and you're angry that the author of one of those building blocks in changing their license so that you can't use it any more and still sell your product?
vampirechicken··on Read books from O'Reilly for free

vampirechicken··on How Silicon Valley Perfected Ice Cream
I'm not jealous of San Fransisco. We've got Mardi Gras, Jeni's Splend, and Graeters within walking or driving distance. Columbus, OH is where the ice cream is.
vampirechicken··on The Technical Interview Is Dead
I'm saying that you'll typically not find pairing as part of an interview process at an organization that does not value pairing. Furthermore, due to the low adoption of pairing, you'll find a lot of candidates that have never paired before, and if there's one thing we know about people, it is that they fear the unknown.
vampirechicken··on The Technical Interview Is Dead
Pairing is a common practice at companies that pair, and not a common practice at those that do not. Pairing is stil not a widely adopted practice industry-wide.

People who were taught to manage using industrial revolution management practices look ta pairing a producing half the output as could be produced by two people at two machines working in parallel.

vampirechicken··on Google Hasn’t Changed Their Interview Questions
all of them.
vampirechicken··on Facebook Login and What We Learned from our Show HN
Clearly, you'll want local login, and then integration to as many services as you can stand: fb, twitter, google, etc. There are some pretty robust solutions that are almost drop-ins that do this kind of thing for you.
vampirechicken··on Facebook Login and What We Learned from our Show HN
If you want a service that hacker news readers will use to find new friends, then listen to their advice about logins. If you want lay people to use it, Facebook login is clearly the way to go, which you'll learn once you start talking to people (e.g. soccer moms) who don't operate inside hacker/internet engineering echo chamber.

vampirechicken··on Tesla Clashes With Car Dealers
Showrooming, using an actual showroom. Well played.
vampirechicken··on Costco does not hire business school graduates
For me, It would have been a better article if it had maintained Sam's Club as a focus, rather than switching to Walmart after comparing shopping club employee wages.
