valcker··on Show HN: Gitdot – A better GitHub. Open-source, written in Rust
Appreciate the effort you put into building and getting this product live. It's already more than most do even with LLMs!

However, I think the value proposition should be much higher than simply "GitHub in Rust". GitHub is still a great, complex product, despite its recent problems. There should be some sort of x10 (or at least x5) improvement that will make people _consider_ migrating.

valcker··on Mayor of Paris removed parking spaces, reduced the number of cars
Did they really care about your day though? I feel that in France this type of conversation is rare but much more genuine and not a part of a “service”.

There were no drones back then and it's a real game-changer for asymmetric warfare.

What’s the cost of a single laser? Russia is launching hundreds of those per attack, over a large territory. With a range of 5-7km you’d need _a lot_ of lasers to effectively cover a reasonably large city.
valcker··on Russia's economy has entered the death zone
I live in France, and there’s no shortage of wealthy Russian tourists here, just like there’s always been.

valcker··on Amazon targets as many as 30k corporate job cuts, sources say
If the stats don't lie, they hired ~500k employees in 2020 alone, and nearly doubled their workforce between 2019 and 2021...

How is it compared to Claude Code?
valcker··on I almost quit caffeine in one year
> I've gone back to consuming a limited amount (~1.5 cups) only between 10am and 6pm. I used to have none on weekends feeling a bit off to reset but eventually even this seemed pointless, so 10am-6pm every day has been working well.

That! I lived on zero coffee for many years, however, it is much more difficult to do so once I became a father. I am consuming a maximum of 2 cups of coffee: first one around 10am, the second one in the afternoon but strictly before 5pm. I do that Monday-Friday and I either consume less or no coffee at all on weekend.

I also use decaf if I want to a coffee (as a drink, not as a boosting drug) and if I already consumed my daily 2 cups.

valcker··on To find great remote employees, prioritize candidates with strong writing skills
While I agree that the key to success is _a lot_ of communication, there is much more to the management of remote teams than that: you should treat them like the on-site teams; communicate a lot but prefer video conferencing; try to give your remote teams the overall context; stick to as few means of communication as possible (if it's email, then stick to email).
valcker··on Show HN: Tara – A free Jira alternative, now with Gitlab
Why change something that works? It is much easier/faster to use short IDs than long user story titles.
valcker··on States reject Trump talk of restarting U.S. economy early
> Won't a strong economy increase the pace at which we develop and produce life saving technologies?

And yet, for some reason, having a strong economy in the US didn't make the country better prepared for this crisis.

valcker··on Why have so many coronavirus patients died in Italy?
Could you comment more about the UK?
valcker··on Are Daily Scrum meetings worth it?
Yes, they do but it depends on the context. In my previous company (web agency) they were solving several issues at the same time:

- Project Manager (Proxy Product Owner) is communicating with the client on a daily basis and is getting some important updates about the progress of the Sprint;

- if there are some unexpected developments (for example, some User Stories appeared to be more complex) the Team and the PO can make a decision about it together, discuss various options, etc;

- the distributed team has a chance to see each other (we were encouraging video calls via Google Meet).

However, there are some certain rules which should be followed in order to make Daily Scrums effective:

- video (or at least audio) conferences for distributed teams – it can actually be slower to have this meeting via Slack;

- they must be timeboxed (15 minutes max);

- stay pragmatic about what you are discussing and ask the feedback of your team about it.

valcker··on The Greening of Paris Makes Its Mayor More Than a Few Enemies
However, it is still better than in the most of the other European cities and it would probably take less or equal time if you had to do the same trip by car.
valcker··on Ask HN: What are you learning in 2019?
Tech-related: 1. TypeScript 2. GraphQL 3. Rust 4. AWS (serverless-related) 5. Functional programming in general

Less-tech: 1. Lean Startup 2. Reading "Cultivating communities of practice" by Etienne Wenger 3. Trying to understand the rentability of real estate investments

valcker··on I wanted to punish my daughter with a no-frills phone but it didn't go to plan
So true! I don't even remember if I have ever actually cooked Mivina. And the story behind it is absolutely stunning.
valcker··on Effort to Expose Russia’s ‘Troll Army’ Draws Vicious Retaliation
Crimea was an "oblast" (or region) of Ukrainian SSR and the referendum was about re-establishing the Crimean Autonomous republic which was the case and was signed by Ukrainian SSR council: http://zakon1.rada.gov.ua/laws/show/712-12

During the separation of republics from USSR, Crimea stayed as a part of Ukraine (and voted for the independence of Ukraine, btw) which was a logical move in terms of infrastructure.

valcker··on Effort to Expose Russia’s ‘Troll Army’ Draws Vicious Retaliation
> Even Crimea itself is an example of stolen territory. It was part of Russia, until (Ukrainian) Khrushchev moved it under administration of Ukrainian SSR in 1954. It was excused as being in the same country anyway.

Not entirely true as it was not a single-handed decision, it has been voted by a council.

> When USSR dissolved, the Crimean referendum about returning it back to Russia was ignored by the newly-formed government in Kiev.

Could you precise which referendum are you referring to? There were only two of them if I remember correctly: 1. Referendum for independence of Ukraine: Crimea participated and voted "for". 2. Referendum to make Crimea an autonomous republic: was voted "for" and made Crimea and autonomous republic (as a part of Ukraine).

valcker··on Multiple terrorist attacks in Brussels – Latest Updates
When you travel to some relatively remote places like Nepal, where it takes a couple of hours for kids to get to their school (if they have a school nearby at all), you very quickly understand that anyone who was born or lives in western countries has a hope for the future.
valcker··on Poll: What's your favorite bug tracker?

valcker··on Ask HN: What would you like to see in Ubuntu 11.10, Oneiric Ocelot?
Absolutely agree.

I love Linux, I'm using it for 10 years and tried many distributions and the only real problem I've experienced was a problem of drivers for my graphic card. Yes, there are some issues with usability, somebody says that UI of Ubuntu is not very clean and easy to understand... Don't get me wrong but I just can't be scared with this after compiling ALSA drivers in Mandrake 6.01 (don't remember the exact version) to get a working audio output, or compiling kernel to get a working audio input, or rebooting to windows to download drivers for my Intel dial-up modem, booting back to Linux and then understanding that I'm missing a dependency, then booting back to windows and so on...

However, there are few issues that prevent me installing Ubuntu (or any other linux as problem with drivers exists in all distributions) on the home PC of my parents like upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 my GPU gets hot as hell; when my colleague maximizes flash video to full-screen his X-server freezes; when my friend plugs his second screen both his external and laptop screens turn black and etc, etc. I understand that these problems occur because of proprietary drivers but I really hope that there will be some day when everything will just work.

valcker··on Rate my startup - Slowcop - measure your website's speed
+1, it would be nice to see server response time, dns lookup and other numbers in milliseconds.

Otherwise looks like a great tool.
