up_and_up··on Announcing UberPool
Shared taxis have existed for long time. This is just optimized with the iPhone app. It's really time vs money. You are paying less but it will likely be longer trip since the other rider is not likely going to your exact location.

up_and_up··on When Workers Own Their Companies, Everyone Wins
Here is a list of the largest majority employee-owned companies in the USA: http://www.nceo.org/articles/employee-ownership-100.

That is companies that are >50% employee owned.

Companies marked with an asterisk are 100% employee-owned.

The biggest 100% employee-owned company is Lifetouch Photography in MN with 25,000 employees.

But Co-ops and employee owned companies are not the same thing.

I have worked for several small co-ops that used consensus decision making. While it is true that everyone has an equal voice the tendency is to listen more to people with more experience or expertise in the particular area being discussed. Also, there is a lot of delegation that happens where subgroups are formed so not everyone is deciding what type of toilet paper to buy or how exactly we should implement some minor detail. That being said sometimes random people come up with the best ideas, so it was helpful to have them involved.

I found consensus decision making to be a lengthy process but a rewarding one.

> I've heard some groceries in US converted to co-op model though. Wonder how they are doing now.

One example is Woodman's in the upper midwest: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodman's_Markets

They have 15 locations and over 1 billion in annual revenue.

up_and_up··on Stellar
So how much is a STR worth right now?

Based on the Stripe investment of 3 million for 3,002,289,306.81 Stellars (3% of 100,076,310,227) I am calculating 1 STR = $0.000999237 right now ... is that correct?

up_and_up··on Sleep as a Competitive Advantage
All hours of the night are not created equal!

I am happy with 5-6 hours a night + 20-30 mins of meditation in the morning.

But I always get to bed by midnight!

I used to work in the evenings until 1am or 2am and then sleep later. But I found getting up early (5:30am-6:30am) and working in the morning made a huge difference. Working late in the evening made me feel weak and stressed out. Working in the early morning after meditating makes me feel like I am serious seizing the day.

This is with 3 kids, busy job, hectic schedule etc.

I have tested this out on myself for the past 5 years.

</anecdote>

up_and_up··on The Boomerang Kids Won't Leave
The amount of debt some of these BA and BFA holders have is staggering: 80k, 90k, 130k (with a graphic design degree!!)

Didn't anyone sit them down and run the math of avg salary vs monthly loan payments for any of these careers? It would be tough to pay them off quickly without a hefty salary.

I feel like the parents are to blame here big time, setting these kids up for failure by not being real with them.

I have 3 kids and I definitely plan to instill a serious respect for loans and career goals etc.

up_and_up··on Sweden’s proposed six-hour workday
No, but they look like a cool company.
up_and_up··on Sweden’s proposed six-hour workday
Haha thats hilarious.

I currently work for a fully remote company and it's completely the opposite. We do one weekly status meeting which is usually 20-30 mins. Then project planning/troubleshooting/teambuilding meetings as needed usually around 2-4 hours per MONTH.

EVERYTHING else is discussed/solved very efficiently via IM.

I hope to never work for a company with meetingitus again, big waste of time and resources.

up_and_up··on Git 2.0
> Which does nothing to improve the core problems with your workflow :)

Not sure what you mean. I state above how it helps my workflow.

> Offloading tests to 3rd party will not help you ensure that tests run fast as they should.

That's not the main point of CI. The main point is both: as a sanity check for tests pushed to the remote and also to not waste your time and CPUs running tests locally.

> Working too long on your branch will only make mergers more painful later.

I easily rebase off of master on a daily basis with git, no issues there.

up_and_up··on Git 2.0
> It's like timesheets for your code. Not a big deal, but ever so slightly insulting that you have to deal with them.

Honestly, I'm not sure you have realized the true power of git branching.

Here is our typical workflow at work:

1. Branch master to topic/feature branch

2. Work on feature branch, push feature branch to remote

3. Push of feature branch to remote triggers a Tddium test run.

4. Deploy feature branch to a staging server for internal review.

5. Make fixes, adjustments to feature branch and push to remote, which triggers more Tddium test builds.

6. Once things are looking good, we pull --rebase master, which pulls down everyone elses changes to master.

7. Rebase the feature branch off of master, resolve any conflicts.

8. Merge feature branch into master and push.

Above, branching allowed me to:

* Save my own personal branches to a remote repo where they are backed up,

* Offload my test suite to a 3rd party,

* Allow me to deploy a feature branch to a staging server all without messing with the master branch at all.

I can also squash or rename commits on my branch easily and cherry-pick other commits from other branches without worrying about master. I can also VERY EASILY switch to other branches to work on other features and bugfixes as they arise. I normally work on 2-4 diff branches per day. Try doing any of that in SVN and be in for fun ride...

up_and_up··on Is It Better to Rent or Buy?
> but renters must submit to arbitrary changes, allow men to enter their homes uninvited

Before buying our home, my wife and I rented and had a horrible time with our property manager.

The climax was coming home on a chilly friday night in November with NO WINDOWS in our bedroom and nice little note stating: "Be back on Monday".

The painters were supposed to paint the trim and windows and decided take them out to paint them but not to replace them for the entire weekend.

> Buying allows you to control your property

Amen

up_and_up··on Sweden: The New Laboratory for a Six-Hour Work Day
Relevant to this discussion:

Utah ends 4-day workweek experiment

http://dailycaller.com/2011/09/04/utah-ends-4-day-workweek-e...

up_and_up··on Sweden: The New Laboratory for a Six-Hour Work Day
Agreed, 3-4 day work weeks sounds better all around.

Less commute time, more time to pursue hobbies and take trips.

I bet 4 * 9 hours days would have a negligible impact on worker productivity and reduce costs like heating, cooling, lighting, since offices would be closed an extra day.

up_and_up··on Why Americans Are Moving Less: New Jobs Aren't Worth It
Watch remote working become the next big trend.

Cost of living is also a factor since relocating to a more expensive area is no longer generally worth unless the new salary is way higher. Kids and home ownership would make it very unlikely I would relocate to somewhere likely SF even for double my current income.

up_and_up··on Ask HN: Examples of tech worker cooperatives?
> I was under the impression that every business decision was put to a vote by the entire cooperative.

Depends on the co-op.

I lived in a student co-op in college. Every Sunday night we had a group meeting. Every major decision was made by a consensus making process. Other decisions were delegated to committees or individuals in a particular position: food manager, garden manager etc.

I also worked at a student composting/waste disposal co-op that operated the same. Everyone has a voice in either the actual decision or in electing someone to make a decision.

This type of decision making basically requires lots of communication between members and usually at least one long meeting a week. It also demands that people have mutual respect for each other and the group decision making process.

In both instances it definitely helped me learn to relate with, communicate with and respect others and their opinions.

up_and_up··on Why You’re Not Hiring the Best and the Brightest

So then forget interns and/or jr's devs?

I have found code reviews via pull requests to be a good mentoring tool.

up_and_up··on Ask HN: How do I deal with the "unpaid overtime crowd"?
> They come in at 8am, and leave around 10

> Now they want us to come in on Saturday.

I would definitely GTFO!

Productivity != hours sitting at a desk.

I have worked at a company like this and the issue was definitely poor management direction and poor technical discipline.
