up_and_up··on Outschooling
My wife was from a very competitive school district which forced overachievement and I got beat up by bullies in a small town school. Besides the personal anecdotes,

1. we felt like time was passing too quickly and wanted to have them around, we wanted to be together basically.

2. with 3 kids my wife hasnt been able to work (her line of work is not well paying), so it made sense to start homeschooling vs private schooling.

3. I have issues with what public schools are now, hyper focused on testing, lack of critical thinking, no outdoor time.

The "socializing" concern is a farce imo. Granted we live in area with plenty of groups. Maybe a solo kid way out in the sticks will have problems. Our kids also regularly play with kids 2-5 years older or younger so things are different. Our kids have activities with other homeschool kids 4 days a week.

The schedule looks like this:

M: Outdoor Nature camp: think building fire with bow drills, axes, skinning animals, foraging for wild plants

T: Academic day at home then occasional horseback riding

W: Academic day at home, private music lessons, then playdate at friends house

TH: Homeschool meetup group: think art, music, dance, karate, extracurricular classes with a group of 100 kids and 10 teachers

FRI: another Homeschool meetup group: with various classes and open play

SAT: Climbing, iceskating, skiing, biking, something outdoors

Our life is a mellower version of "Captain Fantastic"

We have homeschool friends who felt the same and tried to get involved with the public school system. They are very civic minded etc. They found the red tape crushing for their kid, who is a bit of genius, plus he was getting beat up etc. Obviously this is anecdotal. They pulled him and now he is winning academic competitions (history, geography) like 3 grade levels above his age. He reads war history for hours and hours.

My wife are secular homeschoolers and have homeschooled our 3 kids: 10,8,5 for 5 years. We use outschool regularly, its a great platform to introduce random topics. I would invest in it honestly. AMA I guess

up_and_up··on Ask HN: As managers, how do you make sure your distributed team is aligned?
You might need to prune and/or curate your slack channels better. For major projects/initiatives we use a new ephemeral slack channel for the duration of the project. All chat comms about the project are stored there. The project roadmap is kept in google docs with tickets in jira.

We have 12 teams and 150 people and prob 50+ channels.

up_and_up··on Ask HN: As managers, how do you make sure your distributed team is aligned?
> I think a distributed team, where individual members of the team are geographically distributed, is designed to fail. Sure you could accomplish some goals but the inertia is working against you. Such teams will be always outperformed by co-located teams.

Provide examples/data for this or I cant take this comment seriously.

As someone who has worked on successful fully remote teams for 6.5 years I couldnt disagree more. My current team is mostly remote and moves Billions of dollars, delivers features at a rapid pace. It comes down to select the right team members, having centralized places of communication and empowering each member with the autonomy and ability to contribute no matter where they sit.

The "butt in seats mentality" is very outdated imo. How many hours are wasted commuting?

up_and_up··on Ask HN: How to overcome fear of flying?
I have had some fear of flying.

Read up on the science of turbulence and how robust these planes are. I occasionally still get waves of fear esp when they are descending fast with turbulence. But after really studying what turbulence is and how strong planes are engineered you will realize that it is very very unlikely turbulence would ever take down a plane.

up_and_up··on Silicon Valley Software Engineer Salaries by Experience Level
I would say work remotely for a company in an expensive place but live in a cheap small town. This has worked out very well for me and my family. All the companies I have worked for were remote-first etc so I never felt like a second class citizen.
up_and_up··on Who Y Combinator Companies Want
> Trust me I would gladly program in anything other than corporate Java if given a chance.

You need a side gig or to get involved with an open-source project. Get exposure outside of work then get yourself a more exciting job.

up_and_up··on Ask HN: Did your life as a parent affected your life as a developer?
So, I have 3 kids, 8,6, and 3.

> I commute every day 1 hour in each direction.

I know some people are stuck in this situation but I would really recommend finding something closer or getting a fully remote job.

I have had a 100% remote job for the past 5 years and it has made all the difference. I wake up, get the kids breakfast and then head over to the standing desk and get to work. Since we homeschool I always eat lunch and dinner with my kids. Working remotely is the only way this would be possible.

> where do you take time for your side projects or studying new technologies

I do this mainly on the job now, currently learning/implementing Terraform and studying for AWS exams. Take on new challenges at work etc. I also freelance, where I am exposed new tech and challenges.

> full stack developer

There are tons of remote jobs for that skillset, I really encourage you to look elsewhere.

up_and_up··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2017)
> I hesitate to say "downvote if they don't have salary info"

Upvoting the listings that include salary will provide enough positive reinforcement as those float to the top IMO.

up_and_up··on India Is Winning Its War on Human Waste
> But somehow the problem persists, it's unbelievable.

Before you get too high and mighty there....

Not long ago (1996) here in the USA, they were still removing all the outhouses that had been positioned directly over fresh-water streams all over Appalachia. See "Straight Piping". [1]

Its easy to judge poor people in other countries, we forget how recently we were (and maybe still are) making similar mistakes.

Unless you are talking about mountaineering gear like anything climbing related: ropes, cams etc.

How in the heck can you trust that used gear will work 100%? I would rather spend more $$ to reduce risk.

up_and_up··on Do Millennial Men Want Stay-At-Home Wives?
It depends, likely she would work part-time and we could continue homeschooling. But if she wanted to go FT, then yeah we would need to send the kids to school/daycare.
up_and_up··on Do Millennial Men Want Stay-At-Home Wives?
I have one. Her choice though as we homeschool 3 kids.
up_and_up··on Instacart Closes Latest Funding Round at $3.4B Valuation
> If there is as much money to be made as Instacart's valuation implies, then it's just a matter of time until the big chains, at least, start offering their own online shopping.

They already do. We sometimes use personal shopping at Whole foods, it costs like $15. You drive up and pick up the groceries. Super easy. Another smaller chain store, for $20, they will shop and deliver to your door.

While great in terms of saving time, the problem is that you sometimes dont get exactly the item you would have picked nor get the option to pick up extra items or things on sale.

up_and_up··on Ask HN: How did employees do after the Jet.com acquisition?
A year before an exit prob means they only vested like 25% percent of their options. At that stage they were prob pretty expensive options and highly diluted. Options are not much good if they are not vested and priced too high.
up_and_up··on Declines in Sexual Frequency Among American Adults, 1989–2014

up_and_up··on Ask HN: Developers with kids, how do you skill up?
> They brushed me off saying it's just not possible or they don't look after their kids.

Fuck that noise.

Hands-down the best programmers I have worked with have had multiple kids. I am talking about darth vader level chops, the gurus on the team. They take a problem or technology and understand it at its deepest level.

Things I notice that they would do:

1. Always have one new major idea/pattern/framework they were focused on learning. They would focus on it and learn it well.

2. Present ideas or attend meetups once a month. Going once a month is not a huge commitment.

3. Have a small side project, maybe something to test out the idea/concept/technology from #1

I myself have 3 kids and this pattern has worked well for me also ;)

up_and_up··on Stock options are complicated
After working at 4 different startups over the past 10 years I can tell you with a very high certainty that the only people who will make much $$$ from options are founders and investors.

Early Employees generally are shafted. Don't think your 20-200 basis points will be worth anything at the end of it. Make a decent salary and avoid companies that work you to death. Take it as a learning experience and look at the options as pure monopoly money.

EVERYTHING is skewed towards founders and investors.

This. My car insurance went up 25% recently b/c of this trend. That's right, OTHER PEOPLES behavior is costing me money. I guess thats how insurance works though right. I mean the insurance companies need to be guaranteed to make money right???

up_and_up··on Robot Crop Pickers Means Fewer Farm Workers
Its tough to raise the price of an agricultural product to accommodate for higher wages. The market sets the price.

Plus its literally backbreaking work. Illegals would rather hang drywall, paint houses or whatever and make 50% more.
