uououuttt··on Arrest of Senior Adviser to the Operator of the “Silk Road” Website
Absentinsomniac gave an answer that echoes my feelings. I was a dealer for many years (not on SR though), so I had to think about this. I'm not sure 100% what I personally would have done in the situation, but if someone snitches on you then that is more or less tantamount to violence. You'll get your home raided, and then you'll be thrown in a cage for many years. Much of it did come down to "it's either you or me" -- I know that sounds simplistic, but when you're faced with some draconian prison sentence for doing something you feel is entirely moral, it's easy to feel that way.

I also agree that the online drug scene tends toward higher quality, more accurately marketed products with far less risk of the violence that is typical on the street. SR users felt like they were part of a movement that was making things a lot safer for drug users/buyers, so if an outsider was threatening that by cooperating with LEOs then, in a utilitarian sense, any sort of action against them was justified.

I know HN user gwern did some work partially documenting the forums.

It was an interesting place to be, especially towards the beginning. I feel that most of us would've supported violence against those cooperating with law enforcement.

uououuttt··on Django 1.9 Released
It's comforting to know that I'm not the only one who struggled to get email-based authentication working in Django. It had me feeling totally incompentent a few weeks ago and I ended up implementing something very hackish to set the username equal to the email address.
uououuttt··on Spooked: What do we learn about science from a controversy in physics?
I personally find the New Yorker to be one of the few news sources worth reading. Can you point out any particular sentences in this article that you don't like the style of? Reading through it quickly I can't see anything that seems overly convoluted or unnecessary.
uououuttt··on Ask HN: How do develop a side project when you have a 40hr/week job?
I did this more or less.

I moved to Cambodia 3 years ago, spending ~500$ per month on average so far. It's not for everyone of course, but I truly don't care about things that most others would consider necessities. All I need is an internet connection and healthy food, both of which are readily available here.

It's easy to find a clean apartment for 100$ per month in Phnom Penh, that is if you wouldn't be too horrified to actually live among the local people, like 95% of the expats here are.

Whoa, did you realize that you commented on it 3 years ago in that second reddit link?

Anyway, no harm in sharing willvarfar. First time I've seen your comment!

uououuttt··on LSD Microdosing
It was 22 at the time, so about 5 years ago. As far as my mental state, it's hard to say what was from what, since I consumed a lot of marijuana and cocaine at the time too, but I did have psychedelic-like visual distortions that persisted for many months after. Tryptamine tolerance builds very quickly so by the end I was taking a lot.

It was not the happiest time of my life, but not the worst either. I became pretty reclusive, and spent of lot of late, late nights walking around Minneapolis, sitting on the Stone Arch Bridge[1], watching insane late-night American TV / infomercials / televangelists, playing the guitar, and reading Hacker News. I maintained or even strengthened my interests in technology, but probably absorbed very little concrete knowledge at the time.

By less able to function, I mean I would've been utterly useless to an employer, or as a student, etc. I wouldn't have had the focus to complete any sort of complex project, software or otherwise. I did, however, manage to make some money ;)

So while I was not terribly productive, it did (I think) make me a more empathetic, positive, and less materialistic person and pushed me to make decisions that were ultimately very positive, like selling most of my stuff and moving to Cambodia! Still, I wouldn't recommend it and no doubt some of my behaviour could have incurred terrible legal consequences. My parents were definitely worried too.

uououuttt··on LSD Microdosing
I took average-to-high doses of LSD and/or other tryptamines nearly every day for 3-4 months. It did make me less able to function in my circumstances at the time (surprise surprise!), but I don't count the experience as negative overall, and given a different set of circumstances with fewer obligations to meet, it could have been wholly positive.
uououuttt··on Strong Legs Associated with Healthy Brains in Twin Study
Endurance is the ability to retain strength over an extended period of time, that's all I'm saying.
uououuttt··on Strong Legs Associated with Healthy Brains in Twin Study
If you define leg strength specifically as "seated leg press for a maximal, single repetition" then sure, the Olympic weight lifter will win.
uououuttt··on Strong Legs Associated with Healthy Brains in Twin Study
Any runner? Sprinting is as good as anything for developing explosive leg strength. Of course, the best sprinters work lifting into their training as well.
uououuttt··on Strong Legs Associated with Healthy Brains in Twin Study
The word isn't being redefined. Endurance is the ability to continue exerting physical force over a long duration.

Start selling drugs, then ask your higher-ups. Illegal guns are not hard to find in most US cities and surprisingly cheap too.

Or just go to a gun show in the South.

uououuttt··on Mexico supreme court rules ban on marijuana use unconstitutional
I have also seen this 50% figure from various sources but I find it hard to believe, although I have no specific knowledge that would refute it. As far as I know, it's mostly low-grade weed that comes over the border, and while some grow operations within the US are cartel-run, I still am so surprised it would equal their profits from cocaine and methamphetamine combined.
uououuttt··on Lessig Ends Presidential Campaign
I agree that she is on par with Bush, honestly. She's been central to an administration that has conducted just as much war and added just as much debt as Bush's.

And I would also pick Trump over her, if only out of sheer morbid curiosity.

uououuttt··on Death Rates Rising for Middle-Aged White Americans
> You'll never see a black activist or feminist show solidarity with these poor middle-aged white people.

Speaking of "dividing people along gender and race lines".

uououuttt··on What Would the End of Football Look Like? (2012)
It's also that American football has a lot of downtime between the relatively short plays, whereas Rugby has a more constant style of play. An entire NFL game consists of roughly 11-12 minutes of actual gameplay -- the most recent numbers for rugby I could find put it at ~35 minutes. So, players are less fatigued and can hit harder and faster.
