unstuck3958··on We may not like what we become if A.I. solves loneliness
ditto. I have talked about it before with someone who shared the opinion that falling birth rates is the end of the world, but to single that out is creepy indeed. I do understand that it can be seen as a symptom of decay, but when I them people on why exactly birth rates are so important, it does seem like they implied a sort of existential thesis where procreation is supposedly the end goal.
unstuck3958··on Two narratives about AI
Anecdotal: definitely a long way to go for systems programming, non-trivial firmware, and critical systems in general. And I say this as a huge fan of LLMs in general.

I work as a FW Eng and while they've been of immense value in scripting especially (fuck you powershell), I can only use them as a better autocomplete on our C codebase. Sometimes I'd chat with the codebase, but that's a huge hit or miss.

unstuck3958··on LLM Inevitabilism
how much of the world would you guess be willing to pay for, say, instagram?
unstuck3958··on The emoji problem (2022)
wouldn't writing a parser of sorts that would replace emojis with a valid alphabetical string identifier be trivial?
unstuck3958··on India launches attack on 9 sites in Pakistan and Pakistani Jammu and Kashmir
I live in Kashmir. Can verify the two have been shot down at least.
unstuck3958··on Beej's Guide to Git
I read your guide to C programming as a teen, and as a firmware dev today I'm forever indebted to you.
unstuck3958··on Why pay for a search engine
Why are there so many paying Kagi customers who feel the to write multiple paragraphs of testimonies? This is so unusual of HN.

Reeks of astroturfing.

unstuck3958··on Niagara Launcher
As a happy paying member of two years, thank you for making Niagara!

Tangetial: I'm not a huge dwm/suckless guy, but I have it on my Raspberry Pi. I love how instantaneous everything feels. Compared to 14-core, 32GB work laptop running Windows which I will forever loathe because how slow and buggy everything is. Same for websites (e.g. HN, libreddit vs reddit etc.)

Phi-2 isn't fine tuned for instruction following yet.

It's incredible how accurate the Chatbot Arena Leaderboard [0] is at predicting model performance compared to benchmarks (which can and are being gamed, see all the 7B models on HF leaderboard)

unstuck3958··on Ask HN: How to tunnel HTTP(s) through filesystem?
Thanks for those ideas! Exactly what I'm looking for. Though I've settled for a combination of alternative #4 and #1, I'm using my phone's hotspot with USB Wi-Fi stick.
unstuck3958··on Ask HN: How to tunnel HTTP(s) through filesystem?
So without going into too many details, I can't do it because my VM would still need to be authorized by one of my company's security providers. Which should've been fine, except that the security staff insists I get a new Linux PC and RDP/VNC my way into it from Windows, which I really don't want to do.

Besides, tunneling through filesystems sounds more fun.

unstuck3958··on MemoryCache: Augmenting local AI with browser data
While I agree a website/spreadsheet would be convenient, it's not that complicated. As long as GPU is handling 50-75% of the LLM layers, you should get a decent tok/sec speed (unless you're running really really large models).
unstuck3958··on Smoking causes brain shrinkage: study
I'm one week in my zillionth attempt to quit smoking. Reading stuff like this helps.
unstuck3958··on Charging a lithium battery to 80% only?
AccA is awesome! I used it to repurpose my decade old Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime as a custom wall clock and alarm.

I couldn't figure out how to power it without a battery, and If I had plugged it in all time I was risking an exploded battery.

Enter AccA, it remains between 50-55% all the time, along with prioritizing battery-idle mode (which means the device tries to draw power directly from the external power source).

unstuck3958··on Krita AI Diffusion
> they won't have a need for Photoshop anymore.

That is already true for not just Photoshop, but for almost any kind of proprietary software. If you are willing to embrace the caveats and DIY nature of FOSS, for almost every task FOSS Software is good enough (and sometimes better than proprietary).

I think one of the major reasons of popularity of proprietary software vs FOSS is marketing.

unstuck3958··on Krita AI Diffusion
What Krita and the KDE project in general have achieved is nothing short of phenomenal, and I don't believe the power of libre software is recognized enough even in dev communities like Hacker News.
unstuck3958··on New Study Says Maybe Helicopter Parenting Is Making Kids Depressed
As much as I hate cars, it's not just the cars, but also the social isolation that is a signature of urban environments.

You can get fired for stating that kind of a thing in the US [1]

unstuck3958··on Gaza Strip in Complete Internet / Connectivity Blackout
Internet is a luxury compared to the survival essentials that are blocked in Gaza: food, water, electricity [1].

Since it is impossible to be concerned about Palestine without being viewed in a negative light, mandatory disclaimer: I am horrified of Hamas' actions and do not think they deserve any defense.

It has been possible for quite some time. I remember a few years ago, Google Translate offered a offline translation option (for a specific language pair) on my Android that required a couple hundred of MBs of download.

God bless the Arch User Repo. Stuff like this has made it impossible for me to move on from Arch.

unstuck3958··on I built a plane spotter for my son in minutes
Agreed. In the same spirit, all models (and all software for that matter) should be open and charge only for the computational costs of the service.

I do see how this is a little too idealistic, though.

unstuck3958··on Google preemptively banned hundreds of millions of 'pirate' URLs last year
Same for me. I use Google only to find local results, DDG for the rest.

I'd suggest to start with at least a brief paragraph on what thenose is, what it's goals are etc. I read your post, and found myself reading the technical workings of something I didn't know anything about.
