I'm in that group, and could afford (and am interested) in owning one of these.

Many offset the downsides of the generator with solar, which is increasingly viable, but having it all in a EV especially considering fuel prices is a dream. Even then, using the generator only applies with boondocking. When i'm working full time on a project on the road, I just go to a campground or RV park with full hookups.

I have a Class C along with an ebike to partially mitigate this. To me it's still worth it, although I definitely agree with the tradeoffs.

I also am "full time" nomadic during the summer months, so if I want to stop in someplace specific I do it on a travel day in between campsites.

Thanks for this. It's funny how stemmed from some british dude who essentially made it up and people bought into it.

I was also surprised by all the other terms I seen floating around that are a similar thing

This is good. There's also the digitalminimalism sub on reddit, which all revolves around methods and ways to curate use
unforeseen9991··on I am done. I give up
I've been working on day trading now for just over 5 years. I even took a sabbatical for 1.5 years to fully dedicate myself to it. Still struggling to be consistently profitable. I figure it's going to take me another few years to have be in the place where I feel I can give up my other career entirely. Easily the hardest thing I've ever done in my life.

Definitely right, 99% of influencers about day trading are full of shit

unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: What was being a software developer like about 30 years ago?
What's crazy is that the EDI market is still cornered with VAN's charging absurd rates. It still shocks me everytime I get involved in a project and the EDI portion is like $100,000 a year in VAN charges and they don't blink an eye.
unforeseen9991··on Battle with bots prompts purge of Amazon, Apple employee accounts on LinkedIn
Yeah people's contact information changes over the years, especially these days. Some people I develop a close enough relationship with to exchange personal email accounts, the majority I don't.

I'm independent as well and some of my biggest projects have been from former people i've worked with reaching out.

unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: In what ways is programming more difficult today than it was years ago?
I suppose this is the void that DevOps is trying to fill
unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: In what ways is programming more difficult today than it was years ago?
There are lots of movements to get away from such platforms, but are underground for the most part. Places like /r/digitalminamalism on reddit. The majority of people are not interested enough and do not have enough self awareness or personal motivations to get away from it.

It's like trying to change the way the world works due to climate change. There's a massive amount of inertia and resistance to make the changes required for a better future.

I think the problem is continually compounded by the shorter and shorter attention spans that also allow the bigger and bigger longer term problems to be unaddressed.

unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: How to Stop Caring (Professionally)?
I'd never considered this perspective before, but after a 14 year relationship ended for me the exact same happened. I never before linked the two changes together, ty for that.
unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: I love programming but hate the industry. Can anyone relate?
20+ years as well and this is spot on. I've also been up and down the ladder including coding, management, director, etc. I eventually decided I liked the technical path much more, and that freedom was a very important value for me, so I took the jump to be independent 10+ years ago.

I originally started with multiple contracts doing various support and project work, these days i'm almost exclusively project work that i'm interested in. This puts me back in full control of my time, and I can (and do) take periods of time off.

You may have to slog it out at the beginning of your career, depending on your luck, but you'll develop "career capital" and can leverage it to do what you enjoy the most.

unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: I love programming but hate the industry. Can anyone relate?
I see this too as an independent. As a company brings on more SAAS stuff it gets more complicated to manage, and integration to legacy will always exist, in fact often enough it can entrench the legacy even more as more and more integrations are piled on to each other.

The other thing is that things that were possibly not handled by technology before, are now handled by technology - so while they leverage it, it creates increasing demand for IT.

Sort of a shift from regular staff - purchasers, AP, etc and more IT staff.

unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: What is the most complex topic you understand?
There's also the excellent https://www.nand2tetris.org/

From basic computing gates all the way to running tetris. It taught me so much of the lower levels.

Also a comment as a former Gentoo user of 7+ years - the performance is there - 5-15% maybe. I honestly don't think it's noticeable, it never was to me, but what you learn using Gentoo has served me very well.

I moved on as well. I'm too old to deal with fixing things and all the waiting, I just want it to work haha

unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: Is there anything wrong with splurging on tech?
Very good counterpoints, especially the second. I suppose there is also the chance that recycling and reuse options continue to advance as technology moves forward.

You've just moved the landfill to your house, instead of somewhere else. Where do you think it's going to go when you are dead?

Waste is created at purchase, not at exit.

unforeseen9991··on Baby pics, life lessons, and obits: What happened to LinkedIn?
I don't maintain my profile or participate, but I have an account. It's so that people can contact me, primarily because it's impossible to do so via any other site because I don't maintain any other social media that's tied to my real name.

I've gotten several opportunities via Linked in through past people i've worked with, but only because it functions as a public rolodex.

unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: Single-person creations that have stood the test of time?
I remember you posting years back (5+) about Nomadlist :) Still use it to this day.
unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: Why don't more software projects use BitTorrent for downloads?
Plus a whole number of other distributed projects over the years. Everything web3 is just hyped ideas that are already out there, in some cases for 10+ years.
unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: How do you get started as independent consultant or contractor
I've been independent going on 8 years now, I started with letting some trusted contacts I had made in the industry know, and one of them came to me with an opportunity a few months later. It was a terrifying jump at the time, but I have no regrets and was glad I pushed through my fear.

These days I still do direct independent client work, and new clients come through a consulting / MSP firms I work with, and from my existing network. I get better paid with direct work, but the work coming from the firms is usually more interesting.

Eventually you get to the point of turning down work just because you have too much already, and deciding what you really want to be doing with your time.

I'd say the most difficult thing is trying to find that sweet spot between too little work, and too much work. Sometimes the sales pipeline from initial interest to actual engagement can be measured in years.

unforeseen9991··on I coded a Binance trading bot that analyses news sentiment and places trades
Sorry to break it to you, you aren't going to have any profit with this one either. Practically by definition anything open sourced would erode any edge it has until it's not worth running.
unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: Questions to ask a company to know you don't want to work there?
Yeah, one of the best companies I worked for had a referral payout. It was primarily because they were growing so rapidly and were having trouble finding good people.

The referral only got paid out after the person passes the 3 month probation period.
