unforeseen9991··on About 130 million adults in the U.S. have low literacy skills (2022)
Zettelkasten changed everything for me, I didn't hear about it until my early 40's myself. I also had no idea you weren't just supposed to be summarizing verbatim.

It did take a huge amount of effort to go through the conversion process of my notes, but now it makes things much easier and works how my mind works to link concepts and ideas.

unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: What is your favorite rolling Linux distro?
CentOS isn't the CentOS of previous years, which may have something to do with it. IBM killed it and now it's some sort of Fedora stream type thing that just reused the name?
unforeseen9991··on Cellular outage in U.S. hits AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon users
Due to the gross incompetence these companies operate at, it's too hard to tell the difference.
unforeseen9991··on The Persistent Myth That Most Americans Are Miserable at Work
I was going to say that isn't my experience, but then I realized I haven't dealt with sending a resume into the void, that while I send in a resume, i've always landed my next gig through my network.

Building a network is absolutely key, people who enjoy working with you remember you and at some point you just become set

unforeseen9991··on $500 a day to pretend to be a model: The big business behind OnlyFans 'chatters'
People manipulating and pretending to be someone they are not has been going on since the internet has been a thing and provided the ability to be anon. "Nobody knows you are a dog on the internet" is like 1996.
unforeseen9991··on $500 a day to pretend to be a model: The big business behind OnlyFans 'chatters'
Yeah I do too, and they related similar experiences. The SB's typically have 3-4 men on the go at any one time.

unforeseen9991··on The first Spanish AI model earning up to €10k per month
Was thinking the same thing. The old will become new again when everything is crowded out by AI
unforeseen9991··on Gen Z wants to retire early. They're off to a good start
That's because it's not investing, it's speculating at best, and usually just gambling. Investing is just another word we've lost in recent years from people trying to justify to themselves that they aren't acting like fucking idiots.

Reminds me of Carlin's bit about the softening of language.

unforeseen9991··on FreeTube – The Private YouTube Client
How don't they manipulate you?

They are designed to get you to buy things you don't need, and they do that through manipulating human traits. They make you feel you will be lesser/incomplete/not as good as unless you have such and such product. This is not "appealing" to people - it's stone cold corporate manipulation with only one goal in mind.

People have way less control over how they react to what they take in then they think they do.

unforeseen9991··on YouTube is cracking down on consumers' favorite loophole
I just use the Sponsorblock extension
unforeseen9991··on Singapore: Right to own a car costs $76,000. And that doesn't include the car
Back in my day we used to hotbox on purpose lol. 6 people all crowded into a small bathroom, towel under the door
unforeseen9991··on Switzerland has lost 10% of its glaciers in the last two years
The USA offshored it. And the USA is not the entire world.
unforeseen9991··on Ask HN: How do you manage photos, philosophically?
I'll just address my philosophical approach - which is that of a scrapbook.

I don't manage my photos, which I take a fair deal of as i've been living more or less nomadically for 6 years now. I just organize them by year, as the filenames are datestamped.

If a particular photo is something I know will trigger a negative memory, for better or worse I put those in a folder called "lockbox" with no sorting - the idea being I know what i'm getting into when I look in there.

I very rarely review my photos, sometimes once a year when i'm coming up with my plans for the year.

This also matches my journaling - which I treat the same way. I've been journaling almost daily for 20+ years. It's a huge treat to go back to points in time and see what I was thinking and what was going on. I'm regularly surprised on how bad our memory is of what happened vs what we remember happening. I'll often visit it when i'm in a low spot / trapped in a rut.

I'd be surprised if it's not already there due to the fact there's already internal cameras?
unforeseen9991··on Signals says cloud repatriation has already saved $1M
Colo is a much better option, but i've hosted at home before. I have fiber, UPS, and a generator. The home IP wasn't a concern, but you could proxy behind cloudflare or something?
unforeseen9991··on 95 bits per second
I have gigabit fiber so 1gbit up/1gbit down but I really only benefit from the upload speeds with hosting. Most people never use the bandwidth. I only use a fraction of the download but it was only $20 more a month so for me it's worth it especially when sailing the high seas for something new and being able to watch it nearly right away.
unforeseen9991··on Marc Benioff: “I don’t work well in an office”
The push to cloud happens even when it makes no sense for customers at all. I'm in the mergers and acquisitions consulting space for IT and there are a lot of very mature, stable non-it companies that can save millions going colo vs cloud when we spin them off but the push is ALWAYS to cloud, regardless of the costs.

It's now a selling point when buying a company that the infrastructure is cloud based, even if it's IaaS that has been stable and unchanging for 15+ years - and they require the staff to maintain the servers regardless of where it's hosted.

unforeseen9991··on We forced our company to allow work from home again
Bullshit jobs continue to grow, especially as productivity increases. I can see the gap widening quickly as more and more automation comes from the AI progress boom.
unforeseen9991··on Plex to block all servers hosted at Hetzner
Is it possible to import "watched" and the placeholders and other user metadata? I'd switch, but i'm not willing to wipe out everyone's metadata to accomplish it, especially as I have a lifetime plex pass

unforeseen9991··on The Top Programming Languages 2023
I dunno, never underestimate the amount of legacy that exists in the vast majority of corporations. I've come across far more VB developers in non-tech companies then swift developers.

unforeseen9991··on The Airbnb Bubble Popping Will Pop the Housing Bubble
Yep, I don't care what they do. I've been remote for 7 years now, I made it work before COVID, now it's like playing on super easy mode.

My Dad was a work from home pioneer, from back in the early 90's. We got all the latest modem and other tech growing up. If he could make it work with a 2400 baud modem, we can make it work for pretty much every office job.

Notepad++ is much much better for log and config parsing. Also has lots of plugins, like the diff plugin which I rely on a lot when comparing dev/prod config files and such.
