unfletch··on 8.4% of IE9 hangs caused by not using XMLHttpRequest asynchronously
For people who only read as far as the "Fixing It" section, this post will make the problem worse. There's an unfortunate mistake that changes the meaning to the exact opposite of what was intended:

Write your code to call open asynchronously.
You need to pass false for the bAsync parameter to the open method...
The "bAsync" parameter governs whether the call will be async. True (the default) means async, not false. Oops. At least the examples get it right.
unfletch··on Lesser known cool features of HTML5
I haven't tried it, but Canary is available for Mac:

Announcement: http://blog.chromium.org/2011/05/adding-more-yellow-to-mac-c... Download: http://tools.google.com/dlpage/chromesxs

unfletch··on Lesser known cool features of HTML5
Element.classList is a bit of an odd addition. No doubt it'll be useful, but wouldn't something more generic have served us better? Class isn't the only attribute that takes space-delimited values. (Or is there also Element.relList?)
unfletch··on Lesser known cool features of HTML5
Yeah, it must have been targeted at Chrome. I got the same blank page in Safari 5.0.5, and an error dialog in Firefox 5.

Edit: It's meant for Chrome 14.

unfletch··on Amazon announces unlimited MP3 storage with any Cloud Drive plan
People did this to share non-mp3 files on the original Napster. I wonder if Wrapster still runs... http://www.team-mp3.com/mp3/wrapster.htm
unfletch··on CSS3 regions: Rich page layout with HTML and CSS3
This is definitely more ambitious, but basic multi-column text flow is already defined in the multi-column layout module: http://www.w3.org/TR/css3-multicol/

CSS columns as defined by that module have been supported by Firefox and WebKit for some time.

Here's a good example/explanation: http://www.quirksmode.org/css/multicolumn.html

unfletch··on These are things in PHP which make me sad
Yeah, I understand the cause. Just because those steps make logical sense doesn't mean it's not a bug.

My real point was about the WONTFIX tendencies of the PHP dev team at the time (I've been gone a while; maybe it's better now). It's absolutely the thing I miss least about that community. I mean, when I filed that bug PHP 5 -- the first version to support foreach with references -- was less than 2 months old. The "people might be relying on it" argument doesn't hold much weight with me today, but it certainly didn't hold any for a 2-month-old feature.

unfletch··on These are things in PHP which make me sad
I filed that bug 7 years ago and they wouldn't fix it: http://bugs.php.net/29992

I had it a little wrong in the initial report, but it was cleared up in the comments. The reluctance to fix stuff like this because "people might use this for some weird reason" is one of the reasons I'm glad I don't write much PHP anymore.

unfletch··on Vico Editor (Mac text editor)
I have this simple json formatting alias defined:

    alias json='python -mjson.tool'
I'm not much of a vi/vim/macvim user, but I bet you could pipe an open json document through that command pretty easily right in the editor.
unfletch··on iPhone Tracker - map a history of your iPhone's locations.
FYI, the app limits the precision artificially. The database is much more precise. There's an entry in their FAQ about it. Maybe the parent poster patched the app to get finer precision.
unfletch··on iPhone Tracker - map a history of your iPhone's locations.
The precision was limited intentionally. From the FAQ:

To make it less useful for snoops, the spatial and temporal accuracy of the data
has been artificially reduced. You can only animate week-by-week even though the
data is timed to the second, and if you zoom in you’ll see the points are
constrained to a grid, so your exact location is not revealed. The underlying
database has no such constraints, unfortunately.
unfletch··on Amazon Cloud Drive and Amazon Cloud Player
Damn, you're right. I'd played around with Cloud Player a bit last night in Safari/Mac, but I guess I never let it play two songs in a row. I just tried to play an album and it stopped after the first song.
unfletch··on Amazon Cloud Drive and Amazon Cloud Player
It actually looks like they could make the web-based UI work in Mobile Safari without too much work. (Easy for me to say.) The UI renders perfectly already. As far as I can tell, playback is the only thing that doesn't work. (But if you "download" a track it'll open in the built-in quicktime player and start playing.)

Despite the Flash requirement for uploading, they're already doing non-Flash playback. I don't have Flash installed on my desktop and playback works great.

Seeing as Safari has had background audio support since before it was granted to third-party apps, the web UI would be a decent stopgap in lieu if a native iOS app.

Here's hoping it's just a bug!

unfletch··on Amazon Cloud Drive and Amazon Cloud Player
In case you missed it in Amazon's terms, the free upgrade is temporary. It expires in a year, at which point you can start paying or be bumped back down to the free level.

...you will be automatically eligible for the 20 GB plan for one year from
the date of your MP3 album purchase. Unless you set your account to auto-renew
to a paid plan, the 20 GB plan will revert to a free plan one year from the
date of your MP3 album purchase.

unfletch··on Is Facebook one of the Largest Referrers to Porn?
I'd guess the answer to the article's headline is "yes," if not only because of Facebook's size. Being so big, it makes sense that it's one of the largest referrers to anything.

I mean, India has almost as many English speakers as the US. These things happen when the population is a significant portion of the universe.

unfletch··on The State of Things.app Sync, Part 1
Too late for this ex-Things user, unfortunately. I waited for over a year before switching to OmniFocus. After buying licenses and climbing OF's relatively steep learning curve, I'm too invested to switch back.
unfletch··on Apple announces iTunes 10 with Ping Social Network

unfletch··on Amazon: New Kindles Selling at Record Rates

but Kindle books are DRMed and iTunes music isn't.
...anymore. iTunes books have DRM. iTunes music had DRM for years. DRM is the way you get big media to shift business models. Without DRM they'll happily forgo the new revenue stream and die slowly. So you first concede on the DRM point and restrict content just to begin the transition to the new model. 10 years after Napster major labels finally allow (most of) their music to be sold DRM-free. Print publishers will get there too.
unfletch··on Textarea, You Are A Sunken Nothing

    not in my firefox :(
It's coming in 4.0! They've added support for the CSS "resize" property, and set it to "both" by default. Just like WebKit.
unfletch··on What The Fuck Is My Social Media Strategy?
Immediately reminded me of Dack's Web Economy Bullshit Generator, a classic from the original web bubble. I'm happy to see that it's still online: http://dack.com/web/bullshit.html
unfletch··on Apple starts patenting mobile app ideas
That's a cropped image. The actual patent image is here: http://aiw1.uspto.gov:80/.DImg?Docid=20100190510&PageNum... (Open it in something that supports TIFF if your browser doesn't display it. Photoshop worked for me.)

In the un-cropped version you can see that the image is labeled #602. Here's the only part of the patent body where 602 is referenced:

For example, an interface such as interface 602 can be provided on
a user's electronic device. Through interface 602, a user can
search for and view information on the various airport services
  available in the airport.
It might not have been proper for Apple to copy another company's work for illustration in their patent, but the copied UI is for illustration of one possible UI for the described app. IANAL, but it doesn't read to me like they're trying to claim invention of the UI.
unfletch··on Less.js will obsolete CSS
FYI, Less.js isn't just a javascript port. It adds new features, and the "&" selector is among them.

That said, I agree that SASS is more mature. I've used each on at least two projects now, and, with the release of SASS 3.0's and SCSS, I'm committing to SASS. This client-side parsing is a cool trick, but it's easy to do my CSS generation at the same time as my javascript minification. I just don't need it.

unfletch··on Your last name contains invalid characters
I know a woman whose last name is Null. I remember her telling stories of frequent failed form validation years ago (for failing to enter a last name, of course). I wonder if it's gotten any better as the web has matured.

unfletch··on The Day Facebook Stole My Page
In summary, he violated Facebook's terms of service by creating this page, and is accusing Facebook of "stealing" the page from him now that they've finally decided to enforce those terms.

Facebook requires affirmation that the page creator is "the official representative of this person, business, band or product and have permission to create this Page." He said himself he's just a fan.

I've been as annoyed as anyone with all of the recent privacy issues at Facebook, but it doesn't seem they did anything wrong here. Except maybe write up some Terms of Service that aren't fan-friendly.
