unclenoriega··on How to Brexit? – Explore the (im)possibilities of the different Brexit scenarios
The thing about the Electoral College is that it's not really used these days to go against the will of the people in any real sense, but merely to distort the popular vote a little based on how the electoral votes are apportioned. As such, you get all of the downsides, i.e. going against the voters in close elections, effective disenfranchisement of voters in "non-swing" states, etc., without the purported benefit of saving the masses from themselves.
unclenoriega··on Georgia defends voting system despite 243-percent turnout in one precinct
Thanks for the link. I hope that catches on in more places.
unclenoriega··on Georgia defends voting system despite 243-percent turnout in one precinct
It might be possible to have a system that allows you to prove that your vote was counted, but if you want to prove it was counted correctly, then you open the door to vote buying and coercion.

Edit: It seems that technologies now exist to fix this problem. Link below courtesy of tzs.

unclenoriega··on For whom, the bell tolls
"The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun."

I, too, will likely lament the loss, should it come to pass, but we've managed before, and we would again.

unclenoriega··on For whom, the bell tolls
Makes sense. "Whom" is my go-to example of an English word that is on its way out.
unclenoriega··on For whom, the bell tolls
Ah, but then you have to definite "appropriate".
unclenoriega··on "Crypto" Is Being Redefined as Cryptocurrencies
Cryptographers have invited this by using "crypto" to mean "cryptography/cryptographic" in the first place. Without this meaning, "cryptocurrency" couldn't have formed and been shortened to "crypto".
unclenoriega··on DNA Testing Botched My Family's Heritage
If you look at the image in the article, 23andMe includes Scandinavia in northwestern Europe.
unclenoriega··on Ancient Infant's DNA Reveals New Clues to How the Americas Were Peopled
Dates to the 15th century, in fact.

unclenoriega··on Silicon Valley elites spending $60 for less than 3 gallons of unfiltered water
While high-fructose corn syrup is a widely-used sweetener in the US, I don't think most people would call it sugar.
unclenoriega··on Silicon Valley elites spending $60 for less than 3 gallons of unfiltered water
Cane or beet sugar is sucrose, not glucose (although glucose is a constituent of sucrose.)
unclenoriega··on The estate tax is a bad tax say economists (2001)
> Spend your money on riotous living – no tax; leave your money to your children – the tax collector gets paid first.

What about sales/excise/VAT taxes? This letter seems disingenuous at best.

unclenoriega··on FCC plan would give Internet providers power to choose the sites customers see
I live just outside a town of 3000 (in the US). My wired (cable) connection costs $44.95/month ($54.95 without cable TV) for 10/1 with a 500GB cap.

Edit: I meant to imply that 4G would be more expensive. After checking briefly, the best offer I'm finding starts at $30/month for 5GB.

That's a good way to put it.

unclenoriega··on Kim Wall: Headless body identified as missing journalist
Homicide is generally a state-level crime in the US, and each state may have its own names and definitions for specific crimes.
unclenoriega··on Ask HN: How do you deal with piracy?
It's comments like this that make me want to stop paying for things. Some pirates can be converted. Some can't. No need to be overly broad.
unclenoriega··on Pigs are smart and sensitive, yet we continue to justify killing them for food
The neoteny is real.
unclenoriega··on All Nations Except U.S. Agree on Climate Accord at G-20
> it does seem that the US is determined to look inward for solutions instead of looking to what works elsewhere.

American exceptionalism at its worst.

unclenoriega··on What Killed Single-Payer in California?
I think the book you are referencing is The Healing of America: A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper, and Fairer Health Care by T.R. Reid.
unclenoriega··on When TV Logos Were Physical Objects
I'm sure you're correct, but be warned that starting a response with 'you do realize' is likely to make you sound like an asshole[0]

unclenoriega··on Why Religion Is More Durable Than We Thought in Modern Society
This is it. In a largely secular society, an atheist group makes no sense, but in a largely theistic society, an atheist group is natural.
unclenoriega··on Why Religion Is More Durable Than We Thought in Modern Society
It seems like cheating to make a statement like this using "Judeo-Christianity". Judaism seems like a pretty different philosophy or worldview from Christianity. And, of course, both have evolved over time based on the needs of their adherents and the whims of their leaders.
unclenoriega··on Why Religion Is More Durable Than We Thought in Modern Society
I don't think that the ideas "Intelligence + Education == Secularism" and "religious texts are useful" are mutually exclusive.

You'd think so, but it's actually more expensive because you don't get the experience of buying a Klein bottle from Cliff Stoll.

unclenoriega··on My township calls my lawn ‘a nuisance’ (2015)
While sometimes HOA rules can get a bit ridiculous, are you really saying you can't understand why someone would want to pay a tax in order to allow a governing body to enforce a common set of rules (and provide for public spaces)?
unclenoriega··on Unsealed Documents Raise Questions on Monsanto Weed Killer
There would seem to be a big difference between paying someone to do research and paying someone to sign their name to a research paper you wrote.

Also, it's not really surprising that drug studies are industry-funded for another reason: Who else is going to fund them?
