umsm··on Twitter files S-1 with the SEC
Exactly. It feels like they are not concentrating on their profitability yet.

When they do, I believe they will have a lot more income.

umsm··on So I’m the guy who sent the t-shirt out as a thank you
That's a wrong way of looking at the situation.
umsm··on So I’m the guy who sent the t-shirt out as a thank you
I feel like this is a stupid question, but: Why would people get mad at him for sending out t-shirts (i.e. tshirt-gate)?
umsm··on MTurk + Google News API = press
Why not pay the workers on mturk a reasonable rate of $12 - $15 an hour?

Isn't the wage set by YOU, the employer?

umsm··on SQRL - Replacement for usernames and passwords
This is an interesting concept.

The authentication should be safe to be transmitted on the same network... What about if the phone and computer are on the same (i.e. WiFi) network?

umsm··on Ikea's New Solar Panels: Sunshine Optional, Subsidies Required
I'll argue that even in 15 years, you will not need to pay for labor to install and setup the system. Swapping out the old panels with newer, more efficient, and cheaper panels may be less than half compared to installing the entire system from scratch.
umsm··on Note 3’s benchmarking “adjustments” inflate scores by up to 20%
Your comparison with a sports car is very appropriate.

Many cars have "race" modes which allow the computer to use the maximum power an engine has while not trying to force it into an "efficient" mode.

99% of the time you want your car to be as efficient as possible while others you want to see what it's capable of.

The Nissan GT-R does this automatically when you're located on a track:

umsm··on Pakistan quake island off Gwadar 'emits flammable gas'
I hate that! I switched tabs while the 30s commercial was playing and then realized I just missed the actual video!

When I tried to replay the video, I only got commercials...

umsm··on Working hours: Get a life
After working in front of a computer for 8+ hours a day, you need to have a good work/life balance.

When I get home, I stay away from computers. I even contemplated not having a PC at home.

umsm··on Ziptr to Discontinue Services
The only way we will solve secure email is by implementing an open-sourced solution. Period.

It appears like this may be a space where we can't make money from the core service.

umsm··on The Gold iPhone isn't just for mindless sheep that want to show off
In person, it looks so different.

Most of my friends (including myself) were making fun of the gold one, but once we saw it in person, it soon became our top choice.

umsm··on Apple's A7 is Made By Samsung
If anyone is interested as to the feats of this processor, this is an interesting review:

umsm··on How airline reservations are used to target illegal searches
I believe he was just giving an example. It didn't seem like he wanted to offend anyone.
umsm··on BBM Available for Android and iPhone
I'm wondering the same thing. iMessage offers all of what they are stating as features.

But, I have never really used a Blackberry device before.

Additionally, I wonder if releasing this sooner would've saved them or changed history a little...

umsm··on It's A Terrible Time To Buy An Expensive House
The problem is that it's a bit disproportionate. A 1000 sq ft apartment will not have the same amount of taxes as a 1000 sq ft home.
umsm··on USB Condoms
This doesn't really protect you from a more subtle attack: setting up a femtocell access point for your phone to connect to.
umsm··on Twitter Files For IPO
That still doesn't mean that it's a wise financial investment.
umsm··on Apple’s Fingerprint ID May Mean You Can’t ‘Take the Fifth’
Wouldn't you be able to CHOOSE what you apply a fingerprint lock to? Ideally you would only allow it for payments and not other things.
umsm··on Cocktails for programmers
That wouldn't work as there is SOME logic and reasoning to that. We'd have to come up with something else.
umsm··on Phonebloks
Almost any phone not a smartphone could fit your description. There are so many phones that can last for almost a week, but all you can do is talk and text with some light apps.
umsm··on Phonebloks
I completely agree. The trend at apple (for example) is to not allow customer to service their phones or laptops (i.e. gluing instead of screwing components together).

Ideally, I wouldn't mind paying ~$100 for a new screen (or any other assembly), but the problem is that the price of replacing exceeds the cost of the part.

One trend is towards purchasing "accidential" warranties and allowing the customer to trade in for a new device if / when something happens. But the issue is that this coverage is at most 2 - 3 years.

Another issue is that in America, for example, most carriers want to subsidize the phones their customers purchase. By doing this, most people don't see the need for keeping an older phone more than 1.5 - 2 years. If the cost of the phone is taken out of the monthly payments and forced upon the customers, this may allow more people to keep phones for a lot longer.

umsm··on Show HN: Send Your Favorite Articles to the Future
This is a nice idea. I would use this so save articles or even bookmark them for later use.

This can be improved by implementing the "snooze" functionality of an alarm. If you're not ready to read an article when the X amount of time has elapsed, maybe allow a "snooze" the reminder to a later date.

umsm··on Apple’s Touch ID: A 500ppi Fingerprint Sensor Built Into iPhone 5S Home Button
You can train the phone to use more than 1 finger.
umsm··on The Frameless Geodesic Dome I currently live in
This particular post presents a very interesting structure / design. But I don't see this solving any major issue. There seem to be better alternatives to this that solve "housing issues".

Why wouldn't you build a log cabin instead of something like this?

umsm··on The Frameless Geodesic Dome I currently live in
One issue with deviating from the standard rectangular construction is that furniture is designed to fit in square spaces.

Beds, tables, chairs, etc. are mostly rectangular.

umsm··on Our Double Robotics Telepresence Robot arrived today
I don't know if it's just me, but a vertical-line (similar to rear-view cameras in cars) that guides the operator of the robot could be really useful.
umsm··on New iPad browser from Opera
This is a bit off-topic, but these marketing efforts seem to take away from what the product is doing or trying to do. The first 50s of the video contains urban scenes with some dramatic music. It doesn't really explain what the product is, how it's useful or even how it's unique from the current competition.

The product itself could be really really good, but I wouldn't know it from their video or website.

umsm··on Tesla Model S Outperforms Aston Martin
I wouldn't buy a sports or GT car without acceleration being it's "strength"...
umsm··on Tesla Model S Outperforms Aston Martin
Please re-read my original comment. I did say cars.

I wouldn't buy an AM because I need a 4 door sedan for my lifestyle. Yet, isn't it useful to know that it is as refined as a high-end sports car?
