Once you live in San Francisco for a few years, it will become difficult to move elsewhere. You get used to all the cons mentioned. You will start loving running in the 6pm chill, the cultural diversity and the intellectual similarity, the feeling of living in slightly in the future compared to the rest of the world...
I, being an infrequent traveller, am almost always online - whenever I am using my laptop, that is. In the age of always-online-everywhere, how many people really find this useful?
Besides, the two all important questions: How do you decide who is deserving of the free account, and how do you know when they should start paying. You need to cover these both rationally and legally.
b) Can you pre-process some of the queries and make the data available to the algorithm in a BDb or some such?
c) Can you make your heavier components into independent services?
d) You know what they say about premature optimization... :)

It's easy to be against something that you're afraid of. And it's easy to be afraid of something that you don't understand.

But I'm not sure how much a value-add this is over bluetooth which, although a tad slow, serves the purpose of short range communication for things like printing, sharing photos, business cards, etc.
Good thing is that a "touch" might serve as an indication of willingness to communicate and removes the need to press buttons as well as the initial handshake - for really specific applications like using coupons, or payments or to find out details about a product from its tag.

I don't think pricing is a signal. It is a barrier - how high a barrier would you like to set for you customers.
Diversity of thought: Barring phenomena like the Chrome launch, look at the variety of articles here. I think it's great. Remember that this isn't generic news, but Hacker News. So it's going to be more internet & technology centric that your Wall Street Journal.
But will reading books help? What is your intent in suggesting such books to them?
