ukraineally··on What happened to Russias Air Force? U.S. officials, experts stumped
No air force, because cost-benefit isnt there. Too many things to take them out. Not enough things to drop bombs on. Dont worry, they did airstrike the

Navy doing navy things? aka floating there threatening civilians.

Army is in terrible disarray losing tons of equipment to mud. Losing even more equipment to combat. Their MREs expired 7 years ago. Their army sure is looking pathetic.

Is this Putin's last hurrah?

ukraineally··on Russia's top bank quits Europe due to sanctions
>People forget the trump white house tried to disuade Ukraine from joining the EU

I liked Trump in many ways but...

The day of the invasion... everything the democrats ever said were proven true. Trump was clearly starting shit with China because he's team Putin. Made the USA fear China and China became defensive and threatened by the USA. Meanwhile it was all just a play by Russia.

ukraineally··on Russia's top bank quits Europe due to sanctions
>Err..you might want to check your history there a bit more stringently. And say hello to Tibet.

Annexation of Tibet: 23 May 1951

Damn it, you're right... that was 71 years ago.

Have anything more recent? Other than the obvious moves against India. Russia, Pakistan, and China sure are eyeing up India.

ukraineally··on Russia's top bank quits Europe due to sanctions
>So, and I realize all answers will be pure conjecture, what happens if the sanctions work? What's the end game? Can the proverbial tiger be put back in the cage?

Literally everyone in the world is hoping the sanctions work. If it does, it tells the world even a nuclear power can't attack sovereign nations and get away with it. If it doesn't... then humanity is not post-war and we're about to get into a nuclear world war.

>Russia has invaded Ukraine and Europe has responded in a unified manor. China gave muted support, but largely stayed out of it (at least vocally - but still traded with them).

No they didn't. China picked up the phone with Putin on day 1 and said peace talks immediately and made comment they respect Ukraines sovereignty as well as the security needs for all involved. China appears to have been sideswipped and used as as shield by putin.

>China is, of course, watching very closely, as they have their own expansionist interests.

This is seeming more and more like Russian propaganda. China has 75 years of foreign policy showing no expansion. They have all the factories and a gigantic standing army. They could expand and take quite alot. Yet they dont because they know war isn't the way. Invest the war money back in yourself and grow taller.

>How does/can Russia get out of this and save face?

Every good negotiator makes it possible for their opponent to save face. Russia has a huge and simple one they provided themselves. "Nazi government was toppled, we are guaranteeing the new republics. White Peace out." Though to get sanctions lifted im sure there will be reparations to be paid.

>Where will this go with social/cyber warfare - it has to ramp-up dramatically, no? Now that western Europe has increased its military spending, what does that mean for the "World Police" American stance that has been so prevalent since the late 40's?

Everyone is making this about the USA... the Russian propaganda was running all these 'USA imperialism' which hey... they have to get in line... the commonwealth is up first... but the USA didn't do anything. Didnt get involved other than showing unity with the EU. Russia probably predicted the USA would act. In fact, it looks like an awful lot of effort is being done to curb the ongoing russian propaganda internally for most countries.

> Does this, in fact push forward clean technology, or will it hinder it as now America and Canada sit in a prime spot to export fuel and make record profits for decades - environment be damned?

Usa and Canada are leading the way with clean tech in many ways. We have 10,000 trees per person. Canadian solar is top notch. Our automotive industry has pivoted in an instant to manufacturing EVs. Coal plants are gone or going? The only thing I think Canada is missing out on is nuclear fusion.

The world needs oil still. Oil rich countries are switching over. Lets not exclude awesome scandanavian countries. This hasn't been some sort of Canadian conspiracy to convince Russia to attack a sovereign neighbour. This is Canada being a good ally and offering conflict-free oil.

ukraineally··on Ask HN: Why wasn't the USA sanctioned over it's war with Iraq?
>Citizen, here. I'm pretty sure, without looking it up, that we have been on internal war footing well longer than 20 years.

I dont think i understand exactly.

Like the USA has practically always been at war. I do believe right about the year 2000 they had no active wars. The USA loves war... they need to back off for a little while.

ukraineally··on Ask HN: Why wasn't the USA sanctioned over it's war with Iraq?
Is nazis in ukraine the same as wmds in iraq? Not really?

This is all just history repeating really.

Iraq did invade Kuwait of their own accord and fully annexed. UN security council fully condemned and demanded they leave kuwait. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Security_Counci...

Gulf war starts and Iraq was defeated. They had to agree to stop being douches.

UN security council was defied: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Security_Counci...

The videos showing the aftermath of the nerve agent wmds used by Iraq against civilians were crazy frightening. literally entire towns were laying on the ground unable to breath. Not dead yet, just unable to breath. While technically nobody knows if Iraq fired them or not... it pretty much is the case they are the only ones who would. Iraq terminated their relationship with the UN and ejected all the UN observers.

In super hindsight, those sarin and vx bombs ended up being used in syria. It's not really a question whether or not Iraq had these weapons. The whole yellow cake nuclear stuff was unclear but that wasn't really confirmed that Iraq ever got nukes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Security_Counci...

Everyone voted for this. China, France, Russia, UK, and USA supported stopping Iraq.

Russia on the otherhand? What UN security council resolutions have they got to back up this invasion of Ukraine? Nazis?

They went and made good friends with China to use them as a shield for their invasion. Even Pakistan who hates Russia suddenly becoming their friends. Over what? Fear of the USA? The USA isnt even involved in this besides just being united with Europe's approach.

More like they are afraid Russia is going to nuke them if they dont comply. I dont know. Looks to me like they are surrounding India.

Really though. The USA's war exhaustion is maxed out. They've been at war for over 20 years. They need to withdraw from all their wars and focus back at home. Start talking about peace and the need to only help where the UN and their allies agree.

ukraineally··on Ask HN: How do you cope with possible nuclear threat?
>What are some coping skills you use or can recommend to tackle or just mitigate the impending doom that's hanging over our heads?

Mindful meditation seems to be the best. Look up a guided meditation by ajahn brahm.

>I've noticed I'm becoming more scared, demotivated and depressed as the Ukraine conflict marches on and irrational people make nuclear threats.

If the sanctions dont work we are not post-war as the human species.

Fear of NATO is pointless. It's purely defensive. Russia only fears NATO because they had plans to invade. NATO keeps the peace. Being opposed to NATO is being opposed to peace. USA war exhaustion is super high, it's everyone else's turn who wants to invade. Russia took this opportunity.

Now for the topic at hand. The Russian people aren't strong like various Arabic folks. Putin will stay in power and continue his invasions. There will be more, not hard to predict this.

Eventually Russian military will come along and shoot at the wrong thing. Someone who couldn't read a map drove into nato territory and shot at something they shouldn't have... or a bvr missile tracks poorly and downs someone outside the theatre of war. Russians have already 'misfired' on Turkish boats.

Sanctions need to work before that inevitability. When that inevitability does occur, the Russians have been clear that they will use nuclear weapons.

There are alternative scenarios but things like China having been sideswiped by Russia and used as a shield for an invasion probably isn't leaving a good taste in their mouth. They probably only knew about the new republics and Russia was going to recognize. China could turn around and put a stop to the war. I just don't see it happening.

ukraineally··on Ghost of Kyiv
Fulcrum is quite unlikely to take down a SU35 1 v 1. But how about, awacs intel, wingman, and how many on the ground pointing G2A at the SU35. Suddenly it's much easier for the fulcrum to take down all those things.
ukraineally··on Ask HN: Lists of Russian Software to Boycott?
>Not the world community, only the West. Most of the world has no problems with Russia and Russians.

Russia hates asians. During the financial crisis in around 2009... Russians were killing racial minorities. There aren't many asians in Russia anymore...and there never will be.

India? Well Russians just killed some Indian citizens and were trying to prevent them from leaving Ukraine. Probably not going to go well for their relations. Historically certainly strong relations between the 2. India and Russia are long term friends. So are they with the USA. Not to mention, india is probably pretty uneasy about Russia and Pakistan becoming friends all of a sudden. Especially given it's entirely because of India. Hence why India has decreased the amount of military equipment coming from Russia. India sure is concerned about China lately as well. Multiple skirmishes with China. Then they have Pakistan becoming very friendly with Russia on the other side? India is probably seeing what Russia is doing to them. Smartly no side taken but is calling for peace.

Pakistan? Pakistan has hated Russia for as long as I have been alive and longer. Yet here we are today and Pakistan is urgently making friends with Russia. Pakistan even paid to fix their trade relationship. Why are they doing it? They fear India. They don't like Russia, the Russians know this because how many Russians have been killed by Pakistan? Hell, Pakistan boycotted the Russian olympics. Pakistan supports Russia in Ukraine? No... I would agree with you there. Pakistan is certainly gigantic friends with Russia all of a sudden.

China? China hates Russia. Russia owns chinese land and purged all chinese from the land. China wants Manchuria back. HK and Macau were justly given back to China. Was it really settled 15 years ago? You also can check out: https://www.reuters.com/world/putin-tells-xi-that-russia-wil...

It looks like China got blind sided. Russia used China as a shield for their invasion. China probably knew Russia was about to recognize the 2 new republics but didn't know about the invasion. Xi immediately picked up the phone telling Putin to start peace talks and Russia complied. What a gigantic slap in the face to China.

I think something being evaluated as well. Has all this talk about China being about to invade the USA, Australia, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan all been Russian propaganda? Is there reciprocal propaganda? Mind you, talk with any Canadian or Australian and we'll tell you how shit the USA is with their constant world police and warring. Lots of easy justification there.

Its basically public knowledge that Russian propaganda had gotten control of Canadian news media. Certainly seems likely that Australia was as well.

What do you think? You think China is about to invade the USA?

ukraineally··on Ask HN: Lists of Russian Software to Boycott?
>I wonder at which point this current hunt for (civilian) Russians only drives them into the arms of Putin. To me it feels petty and ultimately counterproductive trying to exclude every Russian from the world community.

This is certainly an interesting point. For example, russian chess community for the most part has spoken out against the war. FIDE has withdrawn basically all chess out of Russia and I believe they are moving much of it to India. Which makes sense to me. Tons of awesome Indian chess players. Yes, Russia is attacking Indian citizens in Ukraine and has even killed at least one. Those Russian chess players impacted by the move of chess out of Russia will force them to ask wtf. This won't push them toward Putin by any means.

I suspect the same for other sports and interests will be true.

On the otherhand, the economic sanctions will effectively push the Russian people into demanding from their government to be sure. Economically they need their government to stabilize the situation. They are being pushed into the hands of Putin, but excuses of 'something something nazis' is not going to be enough.

>If you seriously want to boycott "Russian" software, why don't you start with this Sergey Brin guy - sounds Russian to me /s

I can get behind that, though I'm pretty sure Brin hates Russia.

ukraineally··on Russian Ruble Is Now Worth Less Than 1 U.S. Cent After Swift Bank Sanctions
The Russian people are headed into poverty. Many people are effectively unemployed today and still going into work?

We don't need war. Russia is burning to the ground and we can just sit back and watch Russia lose the war. Ukrainian freedom fighters are going to be the most supplied and most motivated the world ever saw.

ukraineally··on Nobody Wants Russian Assets
You buy a stock for the future cash flows. Right now, there is no future cash flows by definition. You would only hold onto russian securities if you are taking the bet that Putin falls.

Might as well just go buy lottery tickets. Less risk.

ukraineally··on Ukraine: Putin's miscalculations could see him strike harder
Now that the reg force are coming in and their spetsnaz effectively got beaten.

They'll be hitting harder sure... but they'll be far less precise. These forces don't want to be there. They will intentionally be attacking civilians and various other war crimes.

They are coming up against general mobilization; they are about to take major losses.

ukraineally··on How to make sure you aren’t spreading misinformation online
The day before the invasion the amount of propaganda about Canadians all being nazis was insanity. Our PM Trudeau even called a Jewish politician a nazi. He even declared martial law to crush a legitimate protest.

When Putin invaded Ukraine to denazify the jewish president... lots of people connected the dots. Many believed Trudeau was team Putin. However, Trudeau quietly revealed the Truth. Russian propaganda got control over Canadian media.

No longer is it 'misinformation' it's straight up propaganda.

ukraineally··on Cutting Russia off from the internet is a bad idea
VERY unconvinced.

RIPE's response is all that matters, not mine. Attempting to remain neutral in conflicts like this is important. Leave possible avenues of communication open so that diplomacy may happen.

ukraineally··on Nukemap Is Down

ukraineally··on Ask HN: How to set up your own VPN for family in Russia
Russia has invaded a sovereign nation under propaganda reasons internally. They are banning VPNs because they can't let the people find out the truth.

If you setup a VPN and your family is caught connecting. They will be considered an enemy.

ukraineally··on Homo Sovieticus
>Strong disagree. The Russian people are victims of their government too, held at gunpoint from expressing their opinions freely. A sufficiently large crowd might be able to storm the institutions of government, but a lot of people would have to be at the front of that crowd, literally in the firing line.

If they are victims, they will stand up against Putin. If they are not victims, they will not.

The world just has to sit back and watch as the Russian people collapse.

This war is probably costing around $25 billion a day before sanctions. With sanctions? Russia is no longer on the world stage.

You know who owns significant amounts of Chinese land? Russia. China hates Russia. Is China about to declare war on Russia to take their land back?

If China moved into Ukraine to fight the Russians at the same time as taking Manchuria back. Absolutely nobody will hear about vladivostock falling as the world applauds China. However, Russia was smart, they announced their 'no limit' alliance with china immediately before this invasion.

Was china aware russia was using them to invade ukraine? Or were they only told about the 2 republics? Why did china rush to tell russia to get to peace talks? Why did Russia slap them in the face and say no?

ukraineally··on Homo Sovieticus
>Russia is an authoritarian state where open dissent with the government has repeatedly resulted in being imprisoned or assassinated. It's very easy to say "just go outside and hold a demonstration" from the comfort of a democracy, but I don't blame anyone for putting their own safety first even if they disagree with Putin's government.

If 50% of the populace hits the streets. The police are literally incapable of doing anything. Yes, they could even spark a civil war, but the alternative is the ongoing disaster of Russia.

ukraineally··on Homo Sovieticus
>After watching a video where Sergey Naryshkin, the director of russian foreign intelligence service, was visibly stuttering trying to find the right words to answer a simple question by Putin, hoping for his dear life that he didn't say something wrong, well, I'm not quite sure a reasonable person who cares about the life of their loved ones is going to risk it all. There wouldn't be dictators if it was easy to go to the streets and take it back.

Yes I saw the same video. Putin surrounded himself with yesmen and propaganda. He most likely misled himself.

Also yes, it takes a strong people to stand up to their government. We saw many people in the middle east topple their governments during the arab spring.

Do you think the Russian people are strong enough to do the same? Idont.

ukraineally··on Scores of IT workers in Russia sign public anti-war petition
There are many good Russian people. Chess community for the most part have said no to war.

It would seem Russians were misled about this war. The problem with the isolation is that Russians will only get the 1 view from now on.

ukraineally··on Homo Sovieticus
>plus the actions of a country’s leaders do not represent the entire will of the people

If the Russian people don't agree with war. They would show up in the capitals and shut down the country until this problem is resolved.

If they do not, then your claim that Putin doesn't represent the entire will of the people is wrong.

The subsequent poverty and isolation the Russian people are about to go through will mean the Russian people have all the reasons in the world to oppose the government. If they don't, then it just proves how much they support Putin.

ukraineally··on Tell HN: If You Are in Russia
>This whole situation is so surreal and disappointing. I grew up on Star Trek and somehow I just though we had (almost) arrived in a post-war, federation-like world. We know things should be solved with words because otherwise there are only losers. It’s how we raise our kids.

I too am a trekkie and we could still obtain this vision.

So far only world sanctions have been brought against Russia.

If the Russian people rise up and protest/overthrow their government. It would tell the world that such extreme sanctions are enough to crush a nuclear power and prevent war. That we are indeed post-war. That borders become less important. Instead of war, we take that money and invest in ourselves. We start building tall.

If the Russian people don't do this. It means we are not post-war. It means we haven't broken the cycle. It means in about 2100, the cycle hits again and we have another massive war.

ukraineally··on Michael Kofman on why the Russian military should not be underestimated
>The radiation thing is not true.

Definitely true... public sensors like weather. Well, i guess you could argue belarus claim is dependent on wind direction. The troops at chernobyl though? No question they are fatally irradiated.

>Kofman claims that Russia is yet to treat this war as a conventional one. What we have seen so far is not representative of their capabilities. There is military failure, but it's also a question of how much destruction Russia is willing to inflict.

The nazi crap seems to have been confusion. It seems Russia believed their own propaganda. They genuinely thought that they were liberating the people who were oppressed. They thought that the ukrainian people were on their side or something. Instead the russian military sure looks trash right now.

This isn't some spec ops precision strike. This is a conventional war. Yes, it's very true that Russia has much more. Said nukes are on alert.

>Unfortunately there is plenty of room for escalation. Putin may not be willing or able to throw in the towel. Cornering a wild animal can be dangerous.

Like what? It's a war crime to intentionally target civilians or civilian buildings. Cruise missiles largely speaking took out most military. Air force has nothing left to really target. Meanwhile antiair is plentiful to keep russia out of the air.

Navy has hit their one target and is now stuck in the black sea burning fuel.

This is an army battle. Russian armor is collapsing. so many destroyed tanks. All the allies are providing antiarmor ammo to ukraine.

Where's the escalation beside using nukes?

ukraineally··on Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, February 28, 2022
They seem to be killing an awful lot of civilians looking for those nazis...

They are finally moving their reg force in via convoy, but boy does that convoy ever look like amateur hour. Which isn't surprising, the russians who have been losing so far have been spetsnaz and armored. This convoy are the people who don't want to be there.

Oh man that convoy. Looks like 1 A-10 warthog would clean them up in about 5 minutes.

Meanwhile... hilarious russian propaganda is that the first wave of troops were all green newbs and they just had old equipment. Like what an absolutely idiotic thing to say. Absolutely nobody sends their weakest troops in first. The morale of your main army driving by loads of destroyed russian equipment is going to be wrecked.

Worse yet, there's tons of examples of russian troops simply not knowing that they are up against literally the entire country. They aren't liberating the people.

ukraineally··on Why hasn't Russia gained control of the air?
There isn't anything in the air for the ukrainians. So they would be only targeting stuff on the ground. Meanwhile the ground will be targeting them. You only have so many flares. So the cost-benefit is probably not there.

Not to mention... how long until a missile tracks something that they arent allowed to shoot. Awful lot of NATO stuff up in the area. 1 nato bird falling from the sky because some newb pilot? You might just find yourself biting off more than you can chew.

ukraineally··on Michael Kofman on why the Russian military should not be underestimated
Ukraine vs Russia certainly favored Russia, but realistically what does Russia have to show for it? They hold some highways and chernobyl? Maybe a few small things but they have spent what? $100 billion so far? Thats not even trying to account for sanctions at all.

Taking chernobyl was idiotic. Every solider they have defending it is getting fatal doses of radiation. The fighting and movement through the area is killing belarus. Ukraine knew not to defend it.

Lets say Russian military is as awesome as their rep suggests... they are getting absolutely wrecked. By a bunch of civilians?

I dont underestimate the russians, but it suggests the spetsnaz are being routed by someone else who are simply better. Where are the seals, rangers, and dragoons? Massive proxy war explains why the russians are being wrecked.

In fact look at the amount of support... general mobilization + this much support? They are the most supplied and motivated freedom fighters in the world.

Its a completely unwinnable war for russia and only a matter of time their troops make a huge accident and cross the wrong line.

ukraineally··on Navalny's supporters call for civil disobedience against Ukraine war
The Russian people will soon be living in poverty. Their country will not function the same way shortly. The Russian Chess community opposes the war and Russia will no longer be competing in Chess anymore. Not to mention how many other sports? The people will want to know why the entire world has rejected them. Why countries which are typically neutral have stood against them.

"something something nazis" is not going to be enough. However, will the Russian people rise up to overthrow their government? No I doubt it. It would be ideal, but I predict the Russian people are weaker than say Tunisia, Egypt, Syria, Yemen. They fear that trying to overthrow putin will plunge them into civil war or worse, just lose.

ukraineally··on The U.S. and NATO must fight
>The only reason that I might buy is that it is morally necessary - necessary because we believe in freedom, and Russia is trying to take away Ukraine's freedom to choose their own future. I'm most sympathetic to that argument, but we've usually only used that in cases of genocide, and sometimes not even then. Ukraine clearly is not at that point... yet.

I read that archived page published by russia as if they won the war. This is all about subjugating Ukraine.

I think the best thing we can do is sit back. Remove Russia from the world theatre by literally closing our borders to them in all ways, but not invade them. This will tell entities like Pakistan, India, and China that we are post-war. Everyone can stop this war shit.

When we do that, we move from a zero-sum game to much more.

ukraineally··on The U.S. and NATO must fight
