My first question was "what library situation?" so in case anyone else reads the comment above and asks the same question:

ukdm··on Cornell Ergonomics Web finds standing desks present their own issues
tl;dr Sit to do computer work. Sit using a height-adjustable, downward titling keyboard tray for the best work posture, then every 20 minutes stand for 2 minutes AND MOVE. The absolute time isn’t critical but about every 20-30 minutes take a posture break and move for a couple of minutes.
ukdm··on The Feel of Scala
Just a warning that this autoplays with very loud audio so you might want to mute before clicking, adjust the volume control (bottom left) and then unmute.
ukdm··on $25 PC alpha board successfully runs Linux
Apologies, but I don't think Raspberry Pi will mind the extra coverage. I think we all want this thing to sell like hot cakes and prove there is a market for gimmick-less, cheap computing that can become part of every school kids' back-to-school kit.
ukdm··on $25 PC alpha board successfully runs Linux
That was the submission into alpha. They have now received their first boards back from manufacturing and are busy getting Linux and testing out its capabilities. I'm hoping we see some more videos very soon of the PC in use.

That's just for the plans. Build cost is estimated at $26,000+
ukdm··on Coders choosing Mac OS over Linux environment
Yes, until Acer confirms or denies it. But Intel has laid out what classes as an Ultrabook, which includes a machine less than 20mm thick, Sandy Bridge second gen chip, and a sub-$1000 price tag. So even if the Aspire turns out to be just a rumor, other laptops will appear with similar specs soon.
ukdm··on Coders choosing Mac OS over Linux environment
Ultrabooks will start appearing soon, and far cheaper than the Air. For example, the Acer Aspire 3951 was just outed. 13.3" display, 13mm thick, Sandy Bridge, 160GB SSD $960, or $770 for the lowest spec which basically means no SSD.
ukdm··on My Standing Desk Experiment
From the study quoted on that statement:

"The participants were asked the question about their leisure sitting time, not their time sitting at work ... My friends who wrote this study also pointed out that the more you sit and watch TV the chances are you will eat more and gain weight."

That doesn't prove anything, but shows that potentially they are focusing on sitting along with other activities like eating fatty "leaisure" foods rather than sipping on a coffee coding all day.

Surely you can add that yourself with a USB dongle?
ukdm··on Java Magazine
A subscriber pop-up on the first page, a pop-up advert on the second, then after the third page a subscription nudge that brings up a dialog box when you try and close the tab. No thanks.
ukdm··on Erlang creator on how to get started and learning to program
"After 30 years you will get the hang of this and be a good programmer."

I wonder if a genuine beginner reading that line would be put off instantly or encouraged to find out if it really would take that long?

ukdm··on GameSalad: Free HTML5/iOS game creator for Mac
Game Maker is currently implementing Game Maker Studio that will allow iPhone, Android, HTML5, and Win/Mac executables. It's meant to be finished this year and allows you to make games without coding. However, there is a scripting language built in (GML) which can be used with the non-programming functionality or replaces it completely.

ukdm··on Apple’s iOS 4 hardware encryption has been cracked
It's not just the passcode they are recovering. That recovery requires the phone, but there's also the key reocvery and bit-to-bit image copy. The ElcomSoft describes the 3 statges:

- Extract hardware-dependent keys, file system keys and escrow keys from the device; - Recover the passcode (subject to passcode length and complexity); - Obtain bit-to-bit copy of device storage.

ukdm··on Tell HN: Use Pop-Up Log-In Forms and People Can't Use LastPass to Log in
I have experienced this and you don't need to load your vault. I just right click on the field, go to the lastpass entry on the menu and do copy username, paste then the same for password.

It takes a few seconds longer, but still works. Also, saving the details of a site is done automatically. All you lose here is a bit of ease of use. A visit to your vault and a few clicks makes the site a new permanent entry.

I believe the 170 million refers to the average number of users who connect and use the service every month. The 600+ million is total accounts.
ukdm··on LastPass requesting password reset after facing unknown anomaly
Someone brought up the same issue in the comments on that post. Here's the solution given, two options:

1) Login in 'offline mode' then reconnect your cable/wireless connection and go to gmail... This is the preferred method. 2) Download Pocket, and have it find your local offline copy from the drop down of files and login there.

ukdm··on An Open Letter To PC Makers: Ditch Bloatware, Now
I think they would be operating in a limited market. However, if bloatware free PCs were offered with a range of other options e.g. pre-installed OS of your choice at no extra charge (and therefore a discount if not having Windows), recycling program for old PCs/laptops taken away by the courier who delivers you new machine etc. Then I'm sure it would be popular within the tech community at least and therefore could make money.
