Personally I came for the faster/robust Ruby first and then over time discovered (and am still discovering) the other powerful pieces. I think that's ok.
And page 4: "As such, we expect it to be a target for other, higher-level, languages to be complied to."
I can't seem to run a search in my location in NY. "Find Me" changes the address but the results are stuck in Seattle. I can't seem to change the query term either.
Just as knowing Spanish will aid you in learning Portuguese, knowing Python will help you pick up Ruby. After you know a few varying languages it becomes much easier to pick up a new one. You notice that they all share the same basic constructs.
Also, each language (in both realms) brings new modes of expression to the table and these can open your mind to alternate ways of thinking. You notice this with spoken languages most when you run into a phrase that is untranslatable to some other languages. This part is perhaps more true of programming languages than spoken languages, but I believe it is true of both to some degree.
I've been hosting my site at https://clever-cloud.com with good results. I've been using Docker there but they just added beta Phoenix support which makes it really easy. They're French, and I'm in the US. So there have been time zone issues and support has been a bit lackluster at times, but generally they've fixed all the issues I've brought up and have been responsive. Price is right.
I went from an elaborate multi-tier caching setup, with varnish and memcache, to a ZERO caching setup. The amount of complexity reduced by doing this is huge.
The Elixir app hits the postgres db for nearly every request and I'm getting average response times around 45ms. Quite a bit of that is database wait time. It's super stable and efficient. And I'm running it on a dirt cheap, tiny node in the cloud, where before I needed two small EC2 instances to keep up with peak loads.
Also, now that I've gotten the hang of it I think it's actually more efficient with regards to development than either Django or Rails.
Here are the google crawler response times directly before/after the switch to Phoenix: http://imgur.com/a/FASyJ
+ App also runs on Android (and even web, and tvos)
I'm always surprised when people don't list this massive benefit when discussing RN. It's really the core value proposition. The fact that it's even in the conversation when developing for only one platform seems like quite an endorsement of the developer experience with RN.
"Cross Blockchains. Cross-chain atomic swaps can occur off-chain instantly with heterogeneous blockchain consensus rules. So long as the chains can support the same cryptographic hash function, it is possible to make transactions across blockchains without trust in 3rd party custodians."
It was a similar situation during the Terry Semel days at Yahoo! Too much focus on becoming a media company and selling ads.
