uberalex··on Physicians group labels obesity a disease
I have lost quite a lot of weight recently, and went out of obese to normal weight range for now.

I do think that there is a clear difference between 'I should cut back on the cakes'-type overweight, and 'I have inadequate control over my eating'-type obesity.

It's not as simple as 'eat less', 'put the fork down chubby' or 'get out and run/lift/whatever'. I have trouble with controlling my appetite, and I have issues with knowing when I should stop eating (it's quite hard to hold back when every body signal indicates you are still very hungry).

In my view obesity is a disease, but it's false to think of it as being like the 'flu. It's a chronic issue, like high cholestorol, blood pressure or a peanut allergy. There are environmental factors and behavioural reasons why it is a health risk, but the underlying cause has a physiological source.

uberalex··on Soylent Month Three
I have to agree with you, but I wonder will it ever be feasible to really understand that in a way that helps individuals? There's an amazing amount of hidden complexity.

For me this experiment is a testament to the variety of human individuality, and the resilience of the human organism.

I can't imagine wanting to replace most of my food with a powder shake, and I drink them fairly regularly post-gym. Beyond that, I think the author's self-testing and self-evaluations are so lost in noise, and so subjective, that they have virtually no measurement value. Finally, his method of picking out what he needs seems ad-hoc and partial.

While we can show lots of things are wrong with chronically bad diets, the human body is surprisingly good at dealing with sub-optimal quantities and qualities of food. The 'perfect' diet is a curious notion really, since the body is a dynamic system that responds to input.

uberalex··on Ask HN: What do you want to see on a restaurant menu besides calories?
I care about calories very much, I have found it an effective way to manage my weight.

Calories, Carbs, Protein, Fat (Saturated vs. unsaturated & Trans).

Maybe marking high-sodium foods, foods containing nuts, foods containing Phenylalanine (ie major/common/severe allergens)

A simple one might be avg serving size (weight)

uberalex··on Top 5 Apps to Help You Lose Weight
I have found http://www.myfitnesspal.com/ My fitness pal to be the best choice for calorie counting. This is mostly because it keeps the records accessible on the web as well as through the app, and because it has the largest and most diverse food database, including items in the UK and Ireland.
uberalex··on UK man convicted for sending "menacing" tweet wins appeal
For me, the blame lies principally with the CPS and the Police, who should have exercised their judgment and not prosecuted.

The link to the full judgment was tweeted here: https://twitter.com/JudiciaryUK/status/228777076352770048
uberalex··on Chrome comes to iOS
I think it has to do with helping to keep iOS users, who are numerous and often technical, inside the google service infrastructure by providing chrome syncing to their iPhone/iPad.
uberalex··on Viewpoints: What will you do with your Pi?
I'm really keen to get at least one for using as XBMC. but I still have no idea when I might get to even order one.
uberalex··on Can three minutes of exercise a week help make you fit?
There are other HIIT techniques, http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-intensity_interval_train... and I gather a common problem with the model is that you have to squeeze the real intensity out of each session, which can be hard.

It's also interesting to read about the genetic test for aerobic fitness progress. I wonder will the future allow better tailoring of health care where genetic evidence helps people get far more precise nutritional and exercise profiles? For example, if you are a non-responder you might be hurt by too much exercise, which is non-productive and which makes you hungry.

uberalex··on How Much Is an Astronaut's Life Worth?
I like the article but I wonder a little about the figures. He seems to assume that the extra research measures push the likelihood of a successful mars mission from 90% to 95%.

I think this underestimates the complexity of the problem. Two thirds of automated mars missions have failed, with an especially dark period around the time of the 1980s, when we were to have sent out the first Astronauts.

I think that there is also an issue with the military/contest aspect. The moon mission had a cold war battle feeling which would be hard to ignite now -- deaths in space just seem tragic and expensive in a way that they did not before (his description of the finger paints being a good example). Would people have the stomach to spend billions to kill 5 people on their way to Mars? How many times before they lose interest?

uberalex··on First RasberryPi PCBs ready
I found it particularly surprising because Broadcom are supporting the project so enthusiastically.
uberalex··on Solar-panel "trees" really are inferior
Trees have leaves on all sides so that catch the sun throughout the day.

You need to enable emoji. There are several free App store apps that will do it. One is Emoji Free! By Awesomest Inc.
uberalex··on Failure: Building a web app that makes $50/month
Best of luck with it! My experience is that the hardest errors are the ones that happen when the system appears to run perfectly :) It may not be a browser error, but a communication one.
uberalex··on Failure: Building a web app that makes $50/month
I suspect $1 is too low, especially if the 6 month theory is correct. I imagine users more likely to pay 5 or 10 dollars because the perceived value of the product is higher, making it more attractive. I feel at $1 the user might think that the task offered isn't worth it.
uberalex··on Failure: Building a web app that makes $50/month
Hi, thanks for an interesting article. I'm curious about the user experience they had -- did users use the tool successfully?

Do you have a measure of their average stay or actions?

I'd be interested to know if some arrived thinking it did one thing and ended up not getting what they wanted.

uberalex··on The Banana Project
This is great. A reset button would be handy though, as I spent ages trying to get the scales back in alignment :)
uberalex··on Museum of me - A museum made from your own facebook data
Can anyone comment on how it's built? I presume that the images are loaded in place-holders in the video, but I would love to know more about it.
uberalex··on Nokia moves Symbian to Accenture & more.
The accenture release is interesting: http://newsroom.accenture.com/article_display.cfm?article_id...

"Transitioning employees, located in China, Finland, India, United Kingdom and the United States, will initially work on Symbian software activities for Nokia. Over time, Accenture and Nokia will seek opportunities to retrain and redeploy transitioned employees."

uberalex··on Typewriter RIP
I can see typewriters that are small and portable with nice design making a comeback, but this article seems to refer to full scale electric typewriters of the IBM Selectric mode.

Something like this olivetti might sell http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olivetti_Lettera_32

uberalex··on Harvard's 1899 Entrance Exam [pdf]
Why does it say "July, 1869" at the bottom?

Were they using the same set of questions for 30 years, or was it put in the library 30 years after it was used?

uberalex··on The dropbox endgame
This article is very interesting. The iTunes example in particular shows that these measures have to be transparent or they won't work very well.

I think this was very much Microsoft's vision for Livemesh; they were thinking about desktop apps running data across the cloud.

There's a real potential for dropbox if they could somehow hook into a variety of web apps and provide a common back end.

The problem at the moment is that if you assume much of the app work people do will move into the browser, you're losing the common file base. You have several app-specific silos across the web.

uberalex··on Chats.io, new HTML5 / Node.JS-powered social group chat, launches
I like this very much, and I would love to see markdown or some other rich markup for chatting.

uberalex··on A Bayesian Take on Julian Assange
Excellent point. I think the article puts on the trappings of science, but is actually entirely speculative.
uberalex··on Pure CSS NES Controller
Me too. The implementation would work a lot better if it didn't change the url each time.

Could javascript return false fix that?

uberalex··on GameTales: Axe Attack
Perfect legendary anecdote.

What sort of customisation do you do to an axe to make it cost $5,000?

uberalex··on Ask HN: Review my startup: Send Handwritten Thank You Notes to Your Customers
This is a creative idea, but I have a few suggestions. 1) Penmanship is a key thing with this, I suppose if it looks too professional that could be a problem, but the note in the sample seems like the lines are bunched and skewed. 2) One question that occurred to me is that if I am a company in location A, if you drop my notes in a postbox they will have the postmark for your location. Might be worth mentioning that you can send them to me in the faq as well as the video.

In terms of using the service, I am unsure about the price point, I wonder is it a little high?

I would be more likely to use it if there were a range of calligraphic as well as normal handwritten note.

A final thing: what about headed paper / templates? Could be useful for a company as they often use compliments cards.

Best of luck!
