I think they ignored the fact that people buy the Air because it's ultra thin and light.

I mean, the Alienware they are comparing it to for example has a height of 1.29 inches whereas the Air is 0.11 to 0.68 inches.

Then for weight the 11" Alienware is 4.39 lbs but the 11" Air is 2.3 pounds.

Obviously there is merit in these alternatives they are rating but I wish they put some value into the thinness and weight numbers that people buy Airs for.

twymer··on Ask HN: Job application
Not cheating, I just mean that it's usually recommended you tailor your resume (especially your objective, if you include this) to highlight your skills and interests relevant to what you're applying for.
twymer··on Ask HN: Job application
Perhaps it would be beneficial to decide what specifically you most want to do. If your 5 months spent job searching have been you informing employers that you're willing to do anything and everything they don't take you serious because you don't specifically want to do the thing they want to hire someone to do. This is pretty much what Patrick said to some degree. If you know what they want and revolve your resume/cover letter around this, it should help a lot. You don't have to send everyone the same resume.

My other comment is your email address. I hope you're not putting "aliengeek4u" on your resume. It's fine for normal personal use but perhaps you should register a second email in some form of your name.

twymer··on How can a rubber duck help a programmer?
I'm torn. Sharing this with coworkers would help them boost productivity, but I'd have to hear them talk to themselves all the time.
twymer··on Twitter to Sell 50% of All Tweets for $360,000 a Year Through Gnip
This is pretty interesting. There are a lot of interesting projects and data analysis that come from analyzing tweets but the price tag seems far beyond what any of these would be willing to pay.

Previously some serious time would be spent scraping content from the feeds but given that it's only 2% of the content and would take months (at least) to gather a significant amount makes it less than ideal. Although I would assume for a vast majority of cases, months are worth less than $360k.

Worth pointing out for those who don't read the article: These scans came from a far less powerful scanner that was used in a court house. The images that come from airport scanners are much more "revealing" than these.

Though given that just like the airport scanners, these weren't supposed to be storing images makes me think a leak of TSA scanner images is inevitable.

twymer··on 'Malemployment' on the Rise
I assume this is related to my point, though, that most people aren't going to college because they care about something but rather because they are expected to. They then wind up picking something easier somewhat at random and can't get a job because of it.
twymer··on Why it sucks having your own company
I can no longer relate to Dilbert.

As long as you don't start to relate to pointy haired boss, you should be okay.

twymer··on 'Malemployment' on the Rise
In 2000, about 30 percent of 20- to 24-year-olds were working in jobs that did not require college degrees. By 2010, that percentage had risen drastically to almost 40 percent.

20-24? A lot of students are taking more than four years for degrees these days. This statistic doesn't specify if it counts students enrolled in college working at a campus job or not.

At the beginning of this year, there were twice as many four-year college graduates working as waiters and bartenders as engineers.

Is the problem just that it's mostly expected that everyone moves on to college, whether or not they can pick a degree they care enough about to make a real effort in succeeding with?

twymer··on The humble programmer...
Funny that despite so many postings, it brought up almost no discussion at any point.
twymer··on Airline sex discrimination seating controversy
I guess I wouldn't complain about the policy to attempt to do this when initially filling seats but to have a forced policy is taking it too far. Especially when it causes cases like the man who was not allowed to sit next to his pregnant wife because of it.

twymer··on Ask HN: quitting programming?
As others have mentioned, your post sounds like it could be minor depression. You mention being social and liking people. Perhaps your problem is that you're keeping yourself cooped up inside while programming so when you think about new ideas, it's bringing you down because of that.

If you live in/near an urban area perhaps you could try finding a co-working space to work out of. You might get lucky depending on where you live and find one with mostly developers. Changing your work environment might change how you feel about the work you're doing.

Finding a job and deciding you really don't like programming even with the work structure and peers also would not be the end of the world. If this is the last job you have doing development, it's not likely that it will have a negative impact on you as you move to a new field.

twymer··on Ask HN: The future of programming languages?
For game development, I think it will diversify with the increasing ease of developing and selling indie games that do well. There are lots of languages getting perfectly good game development libraries that can definitely be used for the (often simple looking) indie game market.

However I don't think the big players in the industry will be able to. To deliver games of great scale (WoW) or intense graphics/effects you're going to need something that can deliver the absolute best performance.

twymer··on Coderloop is the coder's gym
Python 2.7 is the newest 2.x release, so it's what I imagine most people who haven't taken the plunge to Python 3 would be using.
twymer··on Coderloop is the coder's gym
I was pretty excited to do some of this when I got home from work, but my preferred language (Python) is only supported in an ancient version (2.3.0).

I wasn't sure when this version was released so I decided to look it up, 2.3.0 dates back to 2003.

twymer··on Coderloop is the coder's gym
I still think that's missing the point. Publicly showing what percentage of a users submissions pass/fail is probably not desirable to the user. Keeping it private or using it for problem statistics is pretty cool, though.

twymer··on Ask HN: Any good math jokes?
You could always try contacting Randall and explain what you'd like to use the particular strip for to see if you could get a larger image.

Even if the current size was large enough, he would probably appreciate knowing about his work being printed like that as most people do.

twymer··on Ask HN: Any good math jokes?
I object again! Statistics say there are slightly less men than women in the states. Therefore, the average person has more than one breast and less than one testicle.
