twiclo··on Bcvi – run vi over a 'back-channel' (2010)
I prefer sshfs for something like this. Then I can create files the regular way and edit files with my local neovim config.
twiclo··on TikTok's algorithm exhibited pro-Republican bias during 2024 presidential race
I can make up my mind. They pushed insane ideologies. At the convention the other day not a single nominee said, "Maybe we shouldn't fund sex changes for illegal immigrant prisoners." In fact they supported it.
twiclo··on Ask HN: Every day feels like prison
Starting a family has been the antidote to this feeling in my experience. It's not hard at all to motivate myself to write the 6th database migration python script when my son crawls over and gives me a big smile.

It has also motivated me to take advantage of any free time I have. This baby is soon going to be forming a world view and I need to be there to show him the way. If that's true I need to learn a lot, and fast.

twiclo··on There Has Never Been a Better Time to Switch to Linux
A fan is a weird thing to be hung up on. This sounds like a clear example of moving the goal post. For what it's worth, I've heard my FW 13's fan kick on only a couple of times.
twiclo··on Porn Sites Need Age-Verification Systems in Texas, Court Rules
This is the argument that always bother me. It boils down to "Parents just need to parent heir kids." Look at the impossible task of raising a child who's brain isn't impacted by our pornified society today. Why do we think parents are on their own when it comes to keeping their kids from porn but are more than happy to help them keep their kids from cigarettes/alcohol?
twiclo··on Porn Sites Need Age-Verification Systems in Texas, Court Rules
You see no negative effects because your brain grew up on porn just like everyone else you interact with. If everyone is sick then it's going to look normal. To really see the effects of porn you need to ask what could porn affect? Possibly someone's understanding of sexual ethics? Could it push their sexual interests into more and more extreme positions? The generation before has better mental health, less divorce, higher birthrates, etc. Now virtually everything is seen through a sexual lens.

There's a growing problem of women damaging their anuses

Here's an article talking about a teen girl's attempt to imitate porn:

>A 16-year-old girl’s bowel was so badly injured during group anal sex that she needs to use a colostomy bag for the rest of her life.

twiclo··on The Ladybird browser project
What could happen? Why is a new browser engine needed?
twiclo··on NetBox: a source of truth for everything on your network
I'm intimately familiar with Netbox. It has been the backbone of our WISP for going on 6 years. I just finished a long project where I had to do the first update to it in 5 years (a problem I inherited) and while it was painful to get everything ready on our end, I couldn't be happier with Netbox's side of things. The maintainers were able to easily answer questions on database design from 5 years ago. Great guys, great software.
twiclo··on Why I Like Obsidian
Why not use VimWiki on desktop?
twiclo··on Why I Like Obsidian
I decided to start note taking with VimWiki. It's organization is the same and has full vim support where Obsidian has partial keybindings. I still feel like I'm missing out. Can anyone opine on if it's worth switching over?
twiclo··on Almost half of British teens feel addicted to social media – study
I agree with your sentiment but at a certain point it's just impossible for a few parents to push back on the behemoth that social media has become with children.
twiclo··on Almost half of British teens feel addicted to social media – study
That's a great idea. Utah thinks so too. Well, at least between 10:30 PM to 6:30 AM

twiclo··on [dead]
I knew it'd be a slow day on HN but my goodness.
twiclo··on Carr Opposes Biden's Internet Plan
From the release:

But do not take my word for it. The text of the order expressly provides that the FCC would be empowered, for the first time, to regulate each and every ISP’s: ● “network infrastructure deployment, network reliability, network upgrades, network maintenance, customer-premises equipment, and installation”; ● “speeds, capacities, latency, data caps, throttling, pricing, promotional rates, imposition of late fees, opportunity for equipment rental, installation time, contract renewal terms, service termination terms, and use of customer credit and account history”; ● “mandatory arbitration clauses, pricing, deposits, discounts, customer service, language options, credit checks, marketing or advertising, contract renewal, upgrades, account termination, transfers to another covered entity, and service suspension.”

twiclo··on The Adventure Radio Protocol
The article doesn't do a good enough job highlighting what I think is the most interesting part about this proposal. Control boards have been in development (1) that seemingly are going to make it easy for repeaters to facilitate Adventure Radio traffic. These boards will respond to "pings" letting the user know he's activated a repeater. The beautiful thing about this is if you need to contact someone you no longer need to worry about if you programmed the correct repeater or if you programmed it correctly.

In my area, Utah, the mountains make it impossible to hit any repeater even when on the tallest peak of the state. Unless I'm hiking on the Wasatch range where I can see the Salt Lake valley this doesn't work for me. I'll be getting my general soon and won't really be looking back at VHF.

twiclo··on FCC wants to bolster amateur radio
They actually never explicitly say no encryption. I can't find the section right now but it says something like "no obstructing the purpose of your transmission". So theoretically you could add a header to every packet that says "purpose: testing hardware" and you'd be fine. It's only other groups, not the FCC, who have interpreted that to mean no encryption.
twiclo··on Ask HN: Any LAN alternatives other than PowerLine or MOCA?
How do you get the fiber through your walls? Isn't the appeal of PowerLine and MoCA that the cables are already there?

Does this let you set a timer like described in the comic? I can't see it. I'm looking for something that makes me wait a minute before allowing a specified site to load.

twiclo··on Red Hat cutting hundreds of jobs, CEO says in letter to employees
I'm sure this is mostly due to the economy but I would be interested to find out how much of this is due to lack of funding after the CentOS Stream thing.

Can you expand on what you use it for? What dashboards? Why do you like this more than a regular desktop notification?
twiclo··on Pornhub users in Louisiana now have to submit government ID to access the site
When an 8 year old boy (the average age that boys are exposed to pornography) googles a pornographic term the whole page is listed with websites dedicated to pornography. Of course a more mature person can get around that but that doesn't mean we shouldn't do the bare minimum to stop literally 8 year olds from being exposed to hardcore pornography
twiclo··on Pornhub users in Louisiana now have to submit government ID to access the site
Pornhub doesn't have to record it. Bars could record it and so could PH.
twiclo··on Pornhub users in Louisiana now have to submit government ID to access the site
By your logic should we allow kids to buy alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs because it inconveniences adults too much? These are tired arguments from adults who are terrified that it might take 30 more seconds to access their hardcore porn.
twiclo··on Pornhub users in Louisiana now have to submit government ID to access the site
I agree that "Think of the children" is a really annoying talking point but it doesn't make it a _wrong_ talking point. It's often used to push reactionary policy quickly without giving anyone time to think about the repercussions. I'm on HN, I'm a massive advocate for privacy. I self host every single thing I can and use a pinephone.

That said the privacy argument is still not enough for me here. Bars have the ability to store this information they just choose not to. Pornhub also has the ability to choose not to store it. The privacy concerns are worth the risks

Pornography is a dangerous terrible thing. If exposed to it as a child it will likely impact you for the rest of your life.

twiclo··on Pornhub users in Louisiana now have to submit government ID to access the site
I'm certain that we're going to see plenty of comments about how this is terrible for privacy and it's an attack of free speech but we've had limits on porn forever. People didn't consider it a privacy violation if they were carded for buying a pornographic magazine and I'm certain everyone here would not suggest children should be allowed to purchase such magazines. Why should it be any different online?

Yes it's scary what companies could do with this sensitive information and we should try our best to legislate against abuse of these details. It's possible. Bars have the ability to collect thousands of people's driver's license information and we haven't seen much of a security risk there.

The fact of the matter is porn is accessible to children within seconds and for the last 30 years we have done virtually nothing to try to prevent it. We know that porn is harmful, especially to children, and we have done NOTHING to try to prevent it.

I'm okay with adults being inconvenienced if it means we can protect children. That's a standard we've had in America for generations.

twiclo··on Ask HN: Do You Host Your Own Email?
I self host my email. From the very start I had no problems with being rejected. What I have noticed is some companies won't _send_ to me but it's rare so it's not worth paying for hosting service. It really hasn't been very complicated. In the last 3 years I've done it has broken twice.
