twarge··on Did English ever have a formal version of "you"? (2011)
I went to school in the 90's with a wonderful person who grew up Lancaster Quaker and regularly had to suppress speaking to Professors with Thou and Thine. Lost the habit really quickly, but it was charming and very real.
twarge··on New plans for self-hosted Zulip customers
I run Zulip at a small company and want to support development but absolutely cannot justify this cost. The emailed notices are just fine.

Why aren’t cloud services priced closer to cost like every other commodity?

twarge··on I turned Hacker News top stories into AI art on your wall
This is running at work. When it was the newspaper front page people would barely look. Now they stop and study it every refresh (4 hours). It’s the first time most of them have really noticed the unique dynamics and inhuman aspects of the AI art.
twarge··on Passive radiative cooling ceramic with high solar reflectivity
This would not work in your thermos! This material is reflective in the visible but emissive in the infrared. The only thing that matters in the thermos is being reflective in the infrared.

Thermodynamics does not permit a thermal diode to exist.

twarge··on Apple patents suggest future AirPods could monitor biosignals and brain activity
It was novel and reduced to practice. Why can’t you patent it?
twarge··on LabVIEW Abandons Mac After Four Decades
Labview squarely solved the need for a quick UI with few buttons and a graph like nothing else. What can replace it?

Labview for macOS was surprisingly well written! It ran my code better and faster than on windows and Linux.

I understood when various USB hardware drivers were not written for macOS. I was surprised by the quality of the ones they did write. I expected that Ethernet based devices would show up to replace them but it didn’t really happen which still baffles me.

This is a piece with the disappearance of nontrivial desktop software on the Mac. The other one that hit me recently was quickbooks for mac desktop.

twarge··on Words that deserve wider use
I think "wrong" was banned. Perhaps not thoughtcrime but just ungood?
twarge··on Apple patents suggest future AirPods could monitor biosignals and brain activity
Magnetic measurements are both physically possible and don't have muscle interference. For example https://arxiv.org/abs/2001.03534 is a magnetic field sensor that measures brain activity and runs off a USB port.

It's probably a couple decades away, but at least it's feasible.

twarge··on Samsung expected to report 80% profit plunge as losses mount at chip business
It should be $2.2 billion.
twarge··on LibrePCB
Also it’s so well written that you don’t need zillions of bug fixes like you always see in kicad and librepcb
twarge··on LibrePCB
I have found that Horizon EDA is squarely better than both KiCad and LibrePCB. With the addition of blind vias this year, it's capable of everything I could possibly need.
twarge··on Whistleblower CISO says PennState lied about IT security to win $2B from US gov
NIST 800-171, if that's what this is, is actually a decent set of regulations. I find, however, that the software solutions that are available drive companies to use just a few solution providers that creates concentrated points of vulnerability.
twarge··on Whistleblower CISO says PennState lied about IT security to win $2B from US gov
If this is just the standard CMMC clause getting inserted with all government contracts, then they are not actually required to meet all the security standards all at once. They only have to have a plan to meet all the standards. So saying that you are compliant when you aren't here is not a requirement for a contract. It's just lazy.
twarge··on The Decline of Usability (2020)
It’s all about files. That we have a photos app with a custom database is an obvious failure of the OS file system. Why didn’t the BeOS approach work?
twarge··on Spored to death
The White Nose Syndrome fungus is actually endemic to Europe and Asia; it was just its introduction to the US that decimated the population. The fungus is found on European bats with no mortality. It seems the US bat population had no immunity.

Cavers suspect that it was a tourist caver that picked up spores elsewhere and then went caving here. Many cavers stopped caving entirely to slow the spread.

twarge··on The Federal Helium reserve is for sale
You are thinking of helium-3, of which there is none stored here.

It is very much harder to fuse helium-4.

twarge··on UK defends plan to demand access to encrypted messages to protect children
Perhaps Hanlon’s razor should be evaluated before going quite this far?

twarge··on J-CIA64 – Modern spare part for Commodore 64, Commodore 128, SX-64
Which FPGA is it?
twarge··on The Optics Library
Why not vector graphics that can be more easily modified than PNG? Surely these were created using vector graphics tools.
twarge··on Tesla committed fraud by “grossly” exaggerating EV range, class action says
This is correct. If you tell it the destination the range estimate is astonishingly accurate. And it will list all the reasons it turned out to be wrong down to what fraction a headwind impacted range.
twarge··on JumpCloud Security Incident Details
It’s odd to me that centralized management, especially for macOS, is being forced into an array of small companies like this. I worry that these companies are not big enough to invest in securing against this sort of attack.

Why didn’t the macOS Server model work? That at least prevented this sort of centralization. Too bad it was neglected, poor quality software.

It’s doubly odd that the US government is pushing so hard for these solutions by requiring things like NIST 800-171 for government work. It puts an enormous bullseye on these management companies.

twarge··on Effective June 7, 2026, Autodesk will no longer sell nor support EAGLE
Second this! Horizon EDA is far closer to Eagle's library management than KiCad. And it's also much better than Eagle.
twarge··on Introduction to Open Source Laptop Project by Lukas Henkel
Or it needs to be done in Horizon EDA.
twarge··on An open-source alternative to QuickBooks
The official instructions worked perfectly for me:

twarge··on Ellison's Cave
Caves are a major frontier right in our (karst) backyards. They were discovering huge new caves in the 2000s in WVa. Major mapping efforts were a lot of fun. Project cavers would dig all weekend hoping to open up a new passage (and they did). I stopped when white nose syndrome showed up in the bats and it was possibly spread by cavers.
twarge··on Army researchers detect broadest frequencies ever with quantum receiver (2021)
That's already possible with a high sensitivity magnetometer.
twarge··on Desktop 3.8: End-to-End Encryption levels up with sharing and file-drop
An alternative for file sharing: Seafile works for me quite well.

twarge··on Arduino Uno R4
This was also my path. I'm still surprised that stm32 development is not more widely taught. I'm also surprised that products like the leaflabs maple didn't take over.
twarge··on Adding an ISA Slot to a Modern Motherboard [video]
Didn’t Jobs say a word is worth a thousand pictures?
twarge··on Thomas Midgley Jr. invented leaded gasoline and chlorofluorocarbons
Propane is a shockingly better refrigerant. Sure, it's flammable, but is it really unsafe? It's widely used in commercial units.
