twarge··on WireGuard for Windows Reaches v1.0
wireguard on windows and linux are extraordinarily solid at my org.

However, we have a lot of difficulty with macOS, seemingly with rather basic OS-level bugs that don't seem to be their fault: the big one is that a wireguard profile distributed by MDM for a system seems to work for the logged in user, but not for any other user. Seems to be a keychain issue.

While I don't expect any support, there does not seem to be a system to support getting pull requests reviewed and mainlined (including a PR that might address my need). Even tried IRC.

twarge··on Show HN: Stop paying for Dropbox/Google Drive, use your own S3 bucket instead
Yes, notably, the File Provider extension is where the value is for me. Are there any open source options other than Seafile's SeaDrive?

twarge··on Slack has raised our charges by $195k per year
We used Mattermost but eventually started getting annoyed by the nags to upgrade in the free version. Zulip is has been far better.
twarge··on PYX: The next step in Python packaging
it's the pyx you get with `pip install pyx`?
twarge··on PYX: The next step in Python packaging
The real pyx is an absolutely wonderful graphing package. It's like Tex in that everything looks wonderful and publication-quality.

How does this compare with the manufacturing capabilities in ERPNext?

twarge··on Ames Shovel and Tool Catalog of Shovels, Spades and Scoops (1926) [pdf]
These shovels are marvels of mechanical disadvantage. When I had to manually plough a field, the Kodali-type shovel was a much better configuration than a normal shovel because your arms are around the shovel instead of at the far end of a stick.

twarge··on Pi Chess Board
I absolutely remember encountering one of these at a friend's house. I clearly remember the detail about moving the pieces out of the way as needed to make moves. I do not remember the noise of the xy mechanism.

twarge··on All the electricity you'll need for 40 years
Solar allows one to prepay for power. Would be nice to see more efficient financing for it.

Using solar to heat and cool, heat water and run your dryer is quite a bit more. And generally doing the HVAC efficiently requires a large investment in insulation. Those non solar costs may dominate.

twarge··on An adult fruit fly brain has been mapped
Yes, they are apparently exactly the same, with exactly the same neurons and connections!

Happened to go for a walk with the corresponding author and made her repeat this fact for me.

twarge··on GnuCash 5.9
Can confirm. It's excellent software, though getting going on your own server is not as smooth as, say, gitlab-ce.
twarge··on Show HN: A modern Jupyter client for macOS
This sort of high performance minimalism is precisely what makes the Mac app ecosystem great. Not because you can't write the same thing on other platforms, but because everyone who cares about it has condensed on the Mac platform.

Would love to see this adopt the document-based app API and the toolbar API.

twarge··on Overleaf: An open-source online real-time collaborative LaTeX editor
Texifier is incredible. So much faster and nicer than overleaf. They wrote their own display engine in Metal if I understand correctly.
twarge··on Which Electric Cars Have Bidirectional Charging (V2L, V2G, V2H)
It may be on topic, but I'm not sure how you get to selfless if you're promoting your venture.
twarge··on This USB flash drive can only store 8KB of data, but will last you 200 years
Ceramic capacitors should be fine, right?

The pico microcontroller, on the other hand, has normal flash and won't last very long. Here's an interesting article:

Maybe keep it in the freezer?

Otherwise I would expect tin whiskers or some other process to dominate reliability at long periods.

twarge··on Ancient Chesapeake site challenges timeline of humans in the Americas
Linguistic evidence of the same timeline.

https://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=64074

The controversy claimed is entirely overblown. Longer timelines for migration have been discussed widely for quite a while.

I completely understand not wanting to bother with peer review but generally your peers want a good result to be published.

twarge··on Akaunting is free, open-source online accounting software for small businesses
ERPNext is the actually open source accounting software to consider here.
twarge··on WireViz: Easily document cables and wiring harnesses
Does it depict twisted pairs? Often needed to disambiguate colors.
twarge··on The Case Against Homework
You're conflating "selfwork" and homework. Doing the work yourself is indeed critical. It's the bit where you take it home when you're exhausted that is perplexing. Why can't we provide the time and space to do the self work at school?
twarge··on The Case Against Homework
It's generally unacceptable to demand that workers take assignments home to complete when they're exhausted. Perhaps it would be better to treat school more like work?
twarge··on Renesas Buys Altium
Curious to hear what Altium does that a really good open source EDA like Horizon EDA doesn't do.

twarge··on Show HN: Tokamak – Server-side framework for Zig
the name tokamak - funny choice! Will barely achieve fusion with an huge and complex implementation. Surely not the intended implicature.
twarge··on Ask HN: Best open source and/or free EDA tooling
I am repelled by the notion that software requires a constant stream of tweaks to be healthy. If you look at the issues on GitHub, there are basically no open bugs there; it's all feature requests.

You can set a net or net class to have a set of geometric constraints suitable for a particular impedance or current or voltage. This matches or surpasses the capability of every other EDA software that I've used.

I also think it's unreasonable to ask EDA software for a full on FEM simulation. You wouldn't want to do that with the full board geometry anyhow.

twarge··on Ask HN: Best open source and/or free EDA tooling
Horizon EDA is a much better tool than Kicad. It is extremely well written on a modern foundation and as a result it doesn’t need the giant list of bug fixes that kicad constantly receives. Library management is the most fundamental improvement over kicad.

LibrePCB is also worthy of note and seems aimed at Eagle users. Also fundamentally more modern and solid than kicad.

twarge··on Matter, set to fix smart home standards in 2023, stumbled in the real market
Just installed a bunch of Matter bulbs from Nanoleaf to my Apple Home. It worked just fine. Hardware and firmware just takes a long time.
