twangist··on Roger Penrose claims our Universe has been through multiple Big Bangs
That seems to be a personal problem. There's nothing inconsistent about either space or time being infinite.
twangist··on Modern language models refute Chomsky’s approach to language
They no more "refute" other models of language than numerical methods invalidate or refute symbolic math and exact, closed-form solutions.
twangist··on Show HN: SublimeGPT – Use ChatGPT inside any tab without an API key
One may to make it better: make versions of your extension for other browsers.

twangist··on A SVB short seller explains red flags he saw months ago
It does add value — human interest and context, specifically. Perhaps you'd prefer just tables.
twangist··on How to date a recording using background electrical noise
Yes,*and* its harmonics, which would have to be replaced as well if they're detectably present. Swapping hums isn't trivial.
twangist··on Ask HN: Is it possible that p != np as well as p = np
The notions involved are all “absolute”, denote the same sets of objects in every standard model of mathematics (= model of ZFC — quite unlike “the set oll subsets of the integers” which varies from model to model.
twangist··on GNU Octave
The 1-based indexing in Matlab does truly suck, all the time.
twangist··on Would Chat GPT3 Get a Wharton MBA?
Hey if Flump can, what do you think. And the chatbot’s daddy won’t have to bribe anyone.
twangist··on Martin Davis Has Died
Supplemental reading, with much more detail about his work (and with 'Turing' spelled properly): https://logicprogramming.org/2023/01/in-memoriam-martin-davi...
twangist··on Ask HN: Could I refute companies w poor security for asking “What’s your SSN”?
Refute??
twangist··on What help is needed for Lisp community in order to make Lisp more popular?
What's needed is some compelling reason for people to write LISP and not Python, Java, JavaScript, Rust, C++. An attractive Web framework with an ORM, or a tool for scientific computing, might do it. I don't think any amount of fiddling with Emacs (or for that matter vim) would have an effect at all: both have small market share (imho deservedly) and I'd wager even that is dwindling. If programming LISP has to be done in Emacs then, yikes, good luck. I like LISP a lot but strongly dislike Emacs, and would love to have a reason to write it but none has presented itself in decades.
twangist··on Musk Calls to Prosecute Fauci
Abolish billionaires, start with Elmo.
twangist··on Twitter’s $5B-a-year business hit as Elon Musk clashes with advertisers
He has all the social graces, that Elmo.
twangist··on Ask HN: Why is Japan so insular?
You're aware that "insular" means "island-like"?
twangist··on Google is about to change the way you search
Who wants or asked for this? A 3-word reply: Duck Duck Go.
twangist··on What is the best git gui client?
It's a serious question, yet your answer is to dismiss it and change the subject. You may find it hard to believe, but some people do not want to use the rather intricate git CLI.
twangist··on Twitter, Facebook Regularly Coordinated with Biden Admin to Censor Users
It seems to concern attempts to shut down medical dis- and misinfo. If you bemoan that, then please hurry up and secede.
twangist··on Ask HN: Why do new profs think they can teach the same class more than once?
Your question suggests that older profs know that they can't. More generally your question presupposes falsehoods. New profs think they can because, clearly, they can; it happens every year.
twangist··on How good are military-grade propaganda bots?
You won't know until you develop benchmarks and run a shootout.
twangist··on Digital nomad left the U.S. for Bangkok and lives on $8K a month
He's really roughing it.
twangist··on A Phoenix record store owner set the audiophile world on fire
> Sound engineers are making sure this is not the case

That's pretty offensive and ignorant. The loudness wars ended at least 10 years ago.

twangist··on Democratic Elites Don’t Understand the Class Culture Gap
What is this opaque link?
twangist··on The case for bad coffee (2015)
No, you just need to be able to discern features and appreciate desirable ones.
twangist··on The case for bad coffee (2015)
I third this opinion. Their instant packs are their best coffees.
twangist··on The case for bad coffee (2015)
You might return to find the plants having the shakes.
twangist··on Former Nazi guard, 101, gets 5 years in jail
Fox was hoping to hire him?
twangist··on Mites that have sex on our faces at night could face evolutionary oblivion
That sounds like a good thing.
twangist··on Meta launches online store to purchase clothes for your avatar [video]

twangist··on Ask HN: Do you use the bash alias feature much?
> Aliases just don't stick in my memory.

`$ alias` will show you your aliases, and it's a pretty easy command to remember ;)
