twangist··on The clever hack I used to translate my Résumé
First translate it into English: the word is "resumé", just one diacritic.
twangist··on Russia was behind arson attacks targeting the UK's Prime Minister, BBC reveals
I realized too late. I mistook you for a tankie, apologies!
twangist··on Russia was behind arson attacks targeting the UK's Prime Minister, BBC reveals
> Britain sponsors attacks on Putin’s personal residence.

Citation needed.

twangist··on Jimi Hendrix was a systems engineer
The caption on the photo is clearly wrong. No way the other two are Mitch Mitchell (not "Mitchel" (sic)) or Noel Redding, not at any time when Jimi was alive.

Even after The JH Experience, Noel Redding went on to do the band Fat Mattress, and he still had big curly/wavy hair, no moustache, didn't look or dress like an Arby's manager.

I'm pretty sure that's engineer Eddie Kramer at left. https://www.google.com/search?q=eddie+kramer.

No apparent way to submit corrigenda.

twangist··on C isn't a programming language anymore (2022)
C was never a gateway to any flavor of Pascal, a "police state language".
twangist··on [dead]
Protecting Hebrew hate speech, in short. On-brand for Elmo.
twangist··on Ask HN: Where did the tech people on Twitter go?
Somewhere less loathesome.
twangist··on Peter Thiel Wants Everyone to Think More About the Antichrist
Let's not, and say we didn't and won't.
twangist··on US and Russia 'propose West Bank-style occupation of Ukraine'
The West Bank is of course a horrible model for any society, including the West Bank.
twangist··on US demands to know what allies would do in event of war over Taiwan
Allies want to know what, if anything, US would do in event of Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

Answer: bluster, lie, nothing.

twangist··on The Simple Math Problem We Still Can't Solve
From Sept 2020
twangist··on Trump DOJ takes unprecedented step admonishing foreign judge in free speech case
Because the whole rest of the world is crazy, of course.
twangist··on Show HN: I built an AI that creates emails 200x faster than our old workflow
Why would you need to "generate" emails 200+ times faster? Brush up your typing skills.
twangist··on Elon Musk Is Unplugging the Monitors of the Earth's Vital Signs
Unplug Elmo.
twangist··on Text Editors Wiki
Here, "text editor" means Emacs or Vim, mostly Emacs. (No thanks.) Page last updated March 2024 but looks very 1990s.
twangist··on There should only ever be one way to express yourself
That sounds like a horrible way of living.
twangist··on What Is the Future of the DAW?
> it's very hard to write code anywhere that's not linux.

Oh nonsense -- in fact, bullshit. No, it is not. This is a personal problem; seek help.

>Also I truly hate using windows or osx.

And we truly hate hearing about it, and how things don't work well on your platform of non-choice. So suffer it in silence please.

twangist··on What Is the Future of the DAW?
"To the man who has only a hammer, everything looks like a nail." Imagine, expecting Linux to provide a productive, frictionless music creation workflow, using programs that aren't exactly torture-tested for usability on the platform. I think you're supposed to be grateful/amazed that they work at all. (Not that the UX would be dramatically better or trouble-free on Windows or a Mac, using the same suite of apps.)
twangist··on Ask HN: Why did Python win?
Neither Python nor Ruby is "English-like", and neither wishes to be. AppleScript is English-like, COBOL is English-like.
twangist··on Why an unremarkable racist enjoyed the backing of billionaires
Are you his mom? agent? H himself? "a tad trollish" is really a hoot. So is the notion his upcoming book "has a good chance of becoming a bestseller": its commercial performance won't prove the worth of its ideas, just that there's an audience for pompous would-be eugenicists.
twangist··on Apple Again Fails to Save Classical Music
Such as the four composers named in the very next sentence. The platform gives each a playlist, while ignoring four other composers at least as worthy of attention, and named in the subsequent sentence.
twangist··on Falsehoods Programmers Believe In
It's not even optional, it's wrong. One believes in people, causes, dogmas, etc; one believes propositions.
twangist··on Twitter threatens to sue Meta over Threads app
Elmo can use all the money he saved by firing critical staff and not paying rent in four cities.
twangist··on Red Hat dropping support for LibreOffice
Furthermore, Libre Office is not the slickest software, nor do they listen to their users. For about a decade people have been asking, Wth do you mean, I can't select multiple images in a doc and move them?! The team's response remains, You're not supposed to do it that way, you must first smush all your images down into one, then import and move that. This prescribes a waterfall model of doc creation; they're admitting Writer discourages experimentation and stifles creativity. Just a rotten UX and a rotten attitude. They should get better or get lost.
twangist··on HP disables customers’ printers if they use ink cartridges from cheaper rivals
> We don't need to put CEOs in prison for making consumer-hostile decisions, we just need to also make those decisions bad business.

Maybe we don't need to, but let's.

twangist··on HP disables customers’ printers if they use ink cartridges from cheaper rivals
> We don't need to put CEOs in prison for making consumer-hostile decisions, we just need to also make those decisions bad business.

Maybe we don't need to, but we should.

twangist··on How much can Duolingo teach us?
No. What the parent said. Learning how to write them puts knowledge of the glyphs' shapes in your body not just your memory. You will read them better too.
twangist··on The surprisingly deep relationship between mathematics and literature
The difference is English vs American (Chicago Manual of Style) conventions regarding where to put a puntuation mark that follows a quote. American usage goes against reason and includes the punctuation within the quote of which it was not part; it should be abolished!
twangist··on What are the most common tinnitus frequencies? (2015)
1920 Hz in my case. I had tinnitus after I got rear-ended at a stop light. Decades later, it still recurs once in a blue moon, lasts for a mere 10-15 seconds then vanishes when I tell myself repeatedly "nothing is playing 1920 Hz".
twangist··on Roger Penrose claims our Universe has been through multiple Big Bangs
"Nothing" is not a proposition; you can't negate it. You can take it's complement, which is everything.
