tvon··on Neovim public release 0.1.0
I went through this on Friday after a spontaneous update of neovim. The help docs are well maintained, see `:help nvim`, or read online here https://neovim.io/doc/user/nvim.html

tvon··on ESPN suspends publication of Grantland
On one hand this makes complete sense. ESPN wants to appeal to the largest possible audience, which means lowest common denominator coverage (basically shallow analysis and gossip, IMO).

On the other hand, ESPN is large enough that if they gave a crap about providing anything a bit "smarter" for snobs like me they could easily keep Grantland afloat.

Very disappointing and not the least bit surprising.

tvon··on Apple TV is a rethinking of users’ relationship with hardware and games
Please expand on that.
tvon··on Teen says he hacked CIA director's AOL account
This is the NY Post.

Also, what is a NY Post story doing here?

tvon··on Inside the lab: Why Apple still sweats the details on iMac
I mean, that's kind of the point. It's a tiny detail that nobody else would focus on, according to the narrative.

Not that I think it matters myself.

tvon··on Staffpad: a new class of notation app
FYI, the preview that shows up when shared to Facebook is broken (just shows some CSS).
tvon··on El Capitan and Homebrew
It's in /opt, so it's just:

    PATH=/opt/homebrew/bin:/opt/homebrew/sbin:$PATH
I considered a ~/ directory but wanted it available for the rare occasion when there is someone ssh'd into my machine (though I didn't go so far as to update the system-wide shell configs to use it.
tvon··on El Capitan and Homebrew
Homebrew can be installed anywhere, and after ~2 years of having it outside of /usr/local I have not run into any problems. There is a disclaimer somewhere that states some "packages" may not work well with this setup, but that seems like an upstream bug to me. Things should not require things to live in a specific path or prefix.
tvon··on El Capitan and Homebrew
Homebrew is great, but using /usr/local as the default install location just a bad idea.
tvon··on Apple Unveils the iPad Pro
It is not clear what question you are asking.
tvon··on Show HN: Continuo, a simple activity tracker for iPhone
Sure thing
tvon··on Show HN: Continuo, a simple activity tracker for iPhone
Consistently crashes shortly after tapping 'Add an activity'. iPhone 6+, iOS 8.4.1.
tvon··on Taking the 'D' Out of CRUD with Soft Updates
This seems to be the talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRgni5q0YM8
tvon··on The Time Zone Rebels of the World
I think that is over-complication of informercial proportions.

edit: Though the days of the week point I don't have an answer for. Religious holidays are easy, they would follow the old calendar, but I'm not sure how the days would work otherwise.

tvon··on See Android Go
iOS has a surprising number of realistic language choices, where by "realistic" I mean a savvy end-user would never know you didn't use Objective-C (so, PhoneGap & co are not counted).
tvon··on OpenWrt switches to musl by default, replacing uClibc
For the uninitiated, these are libc libraries for embedded systems (alternatives to glibc).

tvon··on Universal asks Google to take down 127.0.0.1 for piracy
Total nitpick on my part, but the line is from an urban legend, which "When a Stranger Calls" (among others) is based upon.

tvon··on How Big is Space?
That could make for a cool park. I imagine you'd have clear line of sight between the planets (either by having a clear path between or by raising them up on monuments), and telescopes setup at each planet in such a way that visitors could look at the other planets without people getting in the way.

The Sun would be 1.5 meters across, the Earth would be 1.2 centimeters across, and the whole thing would be 4.5 km from the Sun to Pluto.

tvon··on Reddit Chief Engineer Quits After Less Than Two Months on the Job
Not that I disagree, but it's worth mentioning (for anyone who doesn't frequent reddit) that firing Victoria was apparently Alexis Ohanian's decision, and not Pao's[1][2], which suggests that the pressure is coming from the board and not an endeavor specific to Pao.

tvon··on Ask HN: I have ssh, they have ssh, how can we chat?
There are existing (old) *nix commands for this. E.g., the `talk` command which I believe needs the talkd daemon running (ntalkd on OS X). There are also `wall` and `write`.

tvon··on Apple Acquires Coherent Navigation, a GPS Startup

tvon··on Drug perks up old muscles and aging brains
I am not aware of anything that has been made illegal to the general public because it was used to gain an advantage in professional sports.
tvon··on Why the sun is a poor dumping ground for nuclear waste (2010)
I think leni536 is just addressing the kind of interesting problem of what it takes to shoot anything into the Sun.
tvon··on Elementary OS 0.3 “Freya” is released
Last I tried it didn't work very well in Arch, but that may have changed over the past month or so.
tvon··on “Sierra… well, it was the poor victim of a hostile takeover by criminals”
IIRC in Kings Quest III (or, the one where you start in a shack at the top of a mountain) I got down the mountain (after falling to my death a hundred times) and across some body of water only to discover I had missed picking something up in the shack that was required to continue. Of course there was no way to go back...

Those games were brutal.

tvon··on Using Private Email, Hillary Clinton Thwarted Record Requests
From a Washington Post[1] article:

> Clinton was not the first secretary of state to use a private account. The State Department said Clinton’s successor as top diplomat, John F. Kerry, is the first secretary to use a standard government e-mail address ending in “state.gov.”

tvon··on Play Breakout while you pull to refresh
I get the impression this is "just for fun" and not seriously meant to be implemented out of need.
