tvbusy··on I stopped reviewing my agents' code. Here's what I do instead
This was exactly me a few weeks ago. I felt unbeatable, things that I planned for several weeks finished in a week. I asked the AI about everything I cared about, special cases, how the code worked together, etc... 8 merge requests for my team to review. Man, it felt good.

Hats off to my team, they did review the code. And it was embarrassing. I could not answer any questions asked by my team without looking at the diff. It was supposed to be "my changes", as we have agreed to the team. You can do everything with AI, but you own the changes. I did not. Why do we need to remove duplicates and call GraphQL in batches of 25 IDs when it's for 3 items displayed on the page? Did I have that much distrust in our Ops team to not believe that they can choose 3 unique IDs without having duplicates and know the difference between 3 and 25?

Use AI for anything you want but make sure you own the changes. Otherwise, you're just a meat proxy. Don't be a meat proxy like me. Be better. This world needs you more than ever to own it.

tvbusy··on Court agrees with EFF: Utah's VPN law demands a technical impossibility
Many VPN providers have servers in many places. Anyone in the US can just use a server in Canada to bypass everything.
tvbusy··on Vermont replacing power plants with home batteries
I was thinking exactly about this when reading the article. The article writes about house owner benefits but it's the benefits of reduced peaks that are more likely to make providers wanting to do so. With this in place, power plants can take half an hour to increase their generation and top up the battery, instead of having to have faster plants round that caters to peaks.
tvbusy··on Hijacking the PS5's RTMP stream
PS5 uses DNS to resolve where to send RTMP stream. The author found out that they cannot spoof the main server since that server uses TLS and it's not possible to make the PS5 trust self made certificate. The author then runs a real Twitch stream and monitors DNS requests and finds DNS of the server that receives the RTMP stream and spoofs only that final server. It's more of a problem with RTMP protocol/Twitch security rather than the PS5.
tvbusy··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
Good news. This world needs more cooperation and friendship.
tvbusy··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
I think it's metadata. Whenever you visit a website, there are many things that track you: 1. The website itself is sending your activities to ads platforms, with your hashed email address and phone number if you're signed in. It does not allow ads platform to reach you directly but email address hash is pretty pinpoint. Everyone hash the same way so it's easy for ads platform to track you across the internet. 2. The website loads trackers which monitor your activities across different websites.

That means if you search for something, not even clicking on it, it's possible for ads network to connect your search topic with your spouse.

tvbusy··on Smartphone makers don't bother to comply with EU repairability requirements
I'll never forget the feeling when you get an old phone, replace the battery and it's like brand new again. People no longer need to replace their phone every year anymore so being able to just replace the screen and battery makes the device practically brand new.
tvbusy··on OpenClaw 2.0, Accidentally
AI is a terrible choice for this task. Radarr does this much better with plenty of built-in as well as community guides for configuration. Add a mobile app for Radarr and it's as convenient as it can be.
tvbusy··on Anthropic Claude and API service outages
Struggling with demands is a performance problem, not a reliability problem.
tvbusy··on Using the railway network as a flatbed scanner
I wonder if having another normal camera capturing at the same time to assist with stitching images together will be easier than measuring acceleration? The normal camera doesn't need to have high resolution, just enough to align the images.
tvbusy··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering?
One thing this post did not discuss is the enormous effort required to explain to the management why number PRs has increased and number of lines changes, which in their view, means explosion of productivity, yet one engineer is destroying the team's momentum.
tvbusy··on São Paulo resident transforms degraded area into urban forest
Now I remember why I have the site in my adblock list. AI Illustrations are an immediate block for me.
tvbusy··on More German than many Germans
When I discussed voting with Germans (looking forward to my first), the reaction has mostly been about not voting for the party that they are unhappy with. I even have an immigrant friend telling me he will vote for the AfD and could not answer me why he's voting for the party that will kick him out of the country. His reason was more because he's unhappy with how the current situation is and wants changes and doesn't really think what change will help.
tvbusy··on Vite+ Beta
It uses Vite so the same limitations as Vite. However, I have been using Vite for my NestJS servers without any problem with `vite-plugin-node`. See example at https://github.com/leosuncin/nest-vite-example/blob/master/v...
tvbusy··on Hey Nico, you didn't vibe code your data room but stole it from Papermark
This person is so dangerous that if I offer them to stay in my shaded yard in the middle of the excruciating sun, they will demand that I let them take my house as well.
tvbusy··on I'm going back to writing code by hand
I don't think the prompts that the author has proposed will actually work. Including final scope and non-scope is good but it's more of a reaction of what the AI already did. These prompts are suitable for a rewrite, basically, since it's unlikely anyone would have had these ready when they start out.

I have found small iterations to have the best results. I'm not giving AI any chance to one shot it. For example, I won't tell it to "create a fleet view" but something more like "extract key binding to a service" so that I can reuse it in another view before adding another view. Basically, talk to the AI as an engineer talking to another engineer at the nitty gritty level that we need to deal with everyday, not a product person wishing for a business selling point to magically happen.

tvbusy··on How ChatGPT serves ads
On the positive side, LLMs are trained based on real data so the default is for it to tell you what data showed. Companies will certainly enforce their influence but it's extra effort against the enormous amount of data, just like with trying to censor sensitive topics. Any context used for ads means less context for the user to use which in turn negatively affects their usefulness.
tvbusy··on Pro Max 5x quota exhausted in 1.5 hours despite moderate usage
We have seen this before. Companies using VC money to take over the market and then increase prices. In the end, we're worse off without these scumbags but some will still sing that we got free service do it's bot enshitification.
tvbusy··on Veracrypt project update
I understand that most people want to move to other more modern tools, it's up to you. However, what baffled me is why the author's choice not to move is a problem? Did we pay them to move and they did not move as promised? Was there some crowd funding to move that was not fulfilled?
tvbusy··on Someone at BrowserStack is leaking users' email addresses
I use DuckDuckGo Email and it generates unique addresses that I can both receive emails (obviously) and reply to from that email. There's also an option to shutdown that address and never receive spam again.
tvbusy··on Tesla Is Sitting on a Record 50k Unsold EVs
If only cancer patients can be this positive.
tvbusy··on Android Developer Verification
Phone sellers should enforce a mandatory 30 days no use after purchasing to ensure that people are not harmed by phone usage.

Newspapers should only report news at a minimum 7 days after the fact to ensure accurate reporting.

Toasters should lock everything in until it's completely room temperature to avoid accidental burns.

These are serious problems.

tvbusy··on OpenAI – How to delete your account
I don't have an account with them. Would it make sense to sign up and create a script to use up the monthly free quota with random characters?
tvbusy··on OpenAI resets spending expectations, from $1.4T to $600B
LLMs have randomness baked into every single token it generates. You can try running LLMs locally and set the temperature to low and it immediately feels boring to always have the same reply every time. It's the randomness that makes them feel "smart". Put it another way, randomness is required for the illusion of intelligence.
tvbusy··on I built Timeframe, our family e-paper dashboard
If you already have Home Assistant running, I think it should be simple. Most of the time you can buy devices with pins already soldered and it's just the matter of connecting them together. AIs are pretty good with ESPHome configs. You can even take a picture so that they can help you identify the correct pins. Some coding may be required for drawing things on the display though.
tvbusy··on Coding agents have replaced every framework I used
Totally. Frameworks also make it a lot easier for new team members to contribute. React, for example, makes it a lot easier to hire. Any project with moderate size will require some kind of convention to keep things consistent and choosing a framework makes this easier.

Now look at the cross team collaboration and it gets even harder without frameworks. When every team has their own conventions, how would they communicate and work together? Imagine a website with React, Vue, Angular all over the place, all fighting for the same DOM.

tvbusy··on ICE seeks industry input on ad tech location data for investigative use
Someone please hint ICE that they can get a lot more data from AI companies. Asking what your rights are? Straight to jail.
tvbusy··on ICE seeks industry input on ad tech location data for investigative use
Although this is quite a dark time, I hope ICE may finally (accidentally) do some good by making it super obvious to people how much online platforms track them.
tvbusy··on Bottom-up programming as the root of LLM dev skepticism
Another classic AI fan article: thin veil of reasoning to finally go back to "because they are stupid".
tvbusy··on All my new code will be closed-source from now on
You're thinking of open source projects that only need a few hours of work per week. Anything more than a few hours a week either requires someone to give up their full time job to work on it (switch to part time jobs/consultation is an option), or having multiple contributors which still require significant effort to coordinate at the end of the day.

Let's say Tailwind CSS gives up and stops the project, do you think there'll be someone else picking it up, knowing how Tailwind failed in the first place? LLMs don't create new things, they remix what are already available. It's delusional to think that you should use LLMs to create a whole UI library just for your application and spend enormous effort not only maintaining it but also train new team members to use it down the road.

Open source is charity, it's unreasonable, even entitled, to demand someone work on it full time without pay.
