tuxracer··on Amazon warned Parler for months about “more than 100” violent threats
If society may be destabilized because one has the knowhow to create something of this scale but not the resources to properly moderate specific violent threats then perhaps a barrier-to-entry preventing that is a good thing

tuxracer··on A 20-year-old CRT monitor can be better than a 4K LCD (2019)
Please don't let CRTs come back in style. After a while they tend to develop this headache inducing high pitched tone almost akin to tinnitus that is emitted constantly while they're powered on. It seems to be so high pitched most people cannot hear it at all but if you're one of the lucky few who can it can actually be really disruptive. Unfortunately it's also often loud enough to hear through doors, walls, etc... Please be mindful of this before setting up a CRT if you go down this path. For example a house might be better for this setup vs an apartment or condo.

tuxracer··on Ask HN: Best way to increase typing speed?
Play a game where typing is required to communicate. Never took any formal typing courses just started playing a lot of EverQuest back in the day. There wasn't voice chat at the time and the gameplay requires a lot of quick communication with your team. Can easily touch type 100+ wpm (according to typeracer.com) now. It's very motivating to be able to type well when you must to communicate and you have something you really really want to communicate via typing (such as communicating with your team via typing in a fast pace game)
tuxracer··on The browsers are probably running the TLS show now
The risk of the communication being compromised isn't necessarily the sole concern. There are also varying levels of consequences for various types of communication for different countries. When it comes to a country that has developed extensive censorship mechanisms and it's casually accepted that one could face a visit from the police or jailed for criticizing its leader or party it doesn't seem completely arbitrary to have some additional concern when it comes to that country possibly compromising your communication.

Is there a good end-to-end encrypted alternative to Evernote?
tuxracer··on Ring lacks basic security features, making it easy for hackers
Sounds like it's not brute forcing simple using the same email/password for some random site that then gets compromised, malicious actors then try those same credentials to log into Ring and they're in first try
tuxracer··on Upgrading Messaging on Android in the U.S. with RCS
Sure they created a lot of apps but they never replicated THE key feature of iMessage which is seamless SMS fallback within the same app. You don't have to even think about "Oh this person doesn't use such and such app"

Allo came the closest but messages sent to phone numbers not on Allo were sent through some proxy number so the recipient ended up getting the message as from some random google phone number.

RCS is the closest Google has ever come to the effortlessness of iMessage in terms of having a single app you can message anyone with, and incidentally there are some benefits if the other person is using a compatible app but regardless the message will get through (and from your number) one way or another.

tuxracer··on 9th Circuit holds that scraping a public website does not violate the CFAA [pdf]
> It is a common misconception that people with disabilities don't have or 'do' JavaScript, and thus, that it's acceptable to have inaccessible scripted interfaces, so long as it is accessible with JavaScript disabled. A 2012 survey by WebAIM of screen reader users found that 98.6% of respondents had JavaScript enabled. [0]

and that was 7 years ago. There may be certain complicated interactions that are a challenge for screen readers but simply because a page relies on JavaScript for rendering doesn't automatically mean it is inaccessible to screen readers.

tuxracer··on Using TypeScript with React
Doesn't sound like a problem you get with typing, sounds like it was actually catching what could be a runtime error in production. If the variable is possibly null but the function you're passing it to expects it to not be null then typescript is pointing out what could be a runtime error if you don't explicitly handle that case (if (!foo) ...)
tuxracer··on Camera and microphone require HTTPS in Firefox 68
Both of these permissions already require consent.
tuxracer··on Construction has kept rent in Chongqing, China to $75 a month
Unless the underlying resource you're referring to is airspace we can definitely increase the supply of housing (and in some cases quite dramatically) without using more of the underlying resource by allowing the construction of taller buildings.
tuxracer··on Gum bacteria implicated in Alzheimer's and other diseases

Not sure what this is based on. What does "toxins" even mean in this context?

tuxracer··on UI redesigns are mostly a waste of time
Kept waiting to see where the data would come in and it never did. This is entirely data-free conjecture. This is the engineering equivalent of an article calling out a particular medicine as being ineffective purely on the basis of "I feel like it doesn't do anything so people should stop taking it".
tuxracer··on Reddit confirms $300M Series D led by China’s Tencent at $3B value
Japan is a democracy with basic rights like freedom of speech. China is currently an extremely censorship heavy totalitarian state. It doesn't seem unreasonable to be concerned about such a repressive state gaining increasing influence over our media via these types of investments.
tuxracer··on Ask HN: Any good font which shows clear difference of text “oO01lLiI”?

Changed the font of Hacker News to Ubuntu Mono a while ago with https://github.com/darkreader/darkreader and can see the difference between those characters in your post quite clearly

tuxracer··on A bug in Samsung’s default texting app is sending random pics to other people
They seem to have the advice slightly mixed up. It's not "revoke Samsung Messages storage permissions OR switch to another SMS app" it should be "revoke Samsumg Messages storage permissions AND switch to another SMS app"

Highly recommend https://www.signal.org/ which on Android can act as your normal SMS client (as an added bonus if your contact also uses Signal there are some security enhancements)

tuxracer··on Announcing NPM 6
Another gem: Trying to use `npm shrinkwrap` will cause npm to enforce peer dependencies as required instead of just a warning https://github.com/npm/npm/issues/12909 Despite the issue being automatically closed by a bot (due to apparent lack of interest from the npm devs) this bug is still going strong a couple years later. Switched to yarn haven't looked back.

tuxracer··on China banned letter N from internet after people used it to attack Xi Jinping
> they're words on paper that governments or populist movements can easily ignore

For example, China's constitution also contains "Article 35. Citizens of the People's Republic of China enjoy freedom of speech, of the press, of assembly, of association, of procession and of demonstration."

However various words and phrases to even mention Article 35 itself are banned in some chat apps, etc... in China even though the full text of the constitution is available anyways.

tuxracer··on Jack White bans phones at gigs for “100% human experience”
If you have the context of having been there then those ultra-shitty videos are more like a trigger for your own memory of that moment to help you relive a really good time. It's a phenomenon similar to how certain smells bring people right back to some moment. It might not be for you but I wouldn't get too indignant about it if others indulge.
