tutmeister··on Chris Seaton has died
It should be common knowledge by now, as the problem has been documented for decades and discussed here many times.[1][2][3][4]

As far as an actual citation: "Studies from Kjølseth et al. (2009), and our own findings (Szücs et al., 2020), suggest that older adults who die by suicide or have late-onset (mostly high-medical lethality) suicide attempts are often high-functioning throughout most of their life, and characterized as controlling, rigid, high-achievers, also high on orderliness (a conscientiousness subcomponent)."[5]

tutmeister··on Gov.uk Platform as a Service
Clicking through shows it to be on the low-end of that range, too, at £50,870. While I work in government UX and appreciate there's a level of serving one's country and fellow constituents, that is simply not enough salary to recruit a highly-qualified individual. Especially considering government services are under constant attack by nation-state threat actors, we should be hiring the best individuals to protect parliament.
tutmeister··on Who Owns My Name?
> In the U.K. newspapers talk about Meredith Kercher.

Maybe sometimes, but Knox's name makes up the vast majority of headlines. Here are just three major UK publications, and see how little Kercher is mentioned in her own search results...

The Independent: https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/meredith-kercher

The Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/world/meredithkercher

The Metro: https://metro.co.uk/tag/meredith-kercher/

That must be very hard for Amanda to deal with, her article was surprisingly calm despite the many reasons to be angry about this continued media hype.

tutmeister··on Dutch crime reporter dies after being shot
As someone from Scheveningen, your attitude is disheartening. It's a very "I've got mine" attitude and in these times I'd hope we band together to knock this detrimental activity on the head before we get to a point like Mexican cartels openly killing police, politicians, as well as journalists. Those of us in the Randstad are most definitely affected by this and other drug crimes, and growing up in the achterhoek in the 89s I noticed they were not unaffected. I've never lived in Groningen, but I cannot imagine your city is less affected than Enschede or Zutphin, both of which struggled through the 90s with criminal drug gangs. Just because you have not been affected personally, does not make it okay, and I suspect that attitude is why others are unwilling to continue the conversation—you've made your mind up and we can't convince you. But as a typical Dutch person, I speak my mind regardless of the threat of being banned.
tutmeister··on Delta pilot sues the airline for allegedly stealing an app he designed
My uncle flew A340-600s on that route for years and had a great time. Due to crew rest requirements and seniority, he only flew 2-3 times a month and had a house on both ends. Unfortunately, he also ended up with a family on both ends and that didn't end too well...
tutmeister··on Our plans to improve navigation on Gov.uk
I lead a government digital service and have migrated from GA out of respect for our constituents' privacy.

Umami is a great self-hosted alternative, which you can load under a subdomain to avoid it being blocked by adblockers. Most of the SaaS products end up on uBlock or other adblocker lists, even when they respect privacy, so this has been my go to option.

UserTrack is another great option we use and it continues to add great features. It's more than worth the commercial license fee. I had a conversation with Cristian by email this weekend, for example, about adding a feature. By this morning he had put together an example in their docs on how to add the feature to your site.

tutmeister··on It’s time to cut the cord on electric vehicles
While this opinion is written by someone with a vested interest in this technology's success, I'm interested to hear this community's opinion on inductive wireless charging at scale. As someone with little knowledge of electricity and these kinds of systems, the idea sounds great at face value, but what are the downsides?
tutmeister··on Facebook extends its work-at-home policy to most employees
Have you tried Miro? It's $8/month if you want to invite others to edit your board. I find it offers good value at that price point. I'm a UX/product manager though, so I tend to pull in a lot of external visuals while I'm working. So YMMV.
tutmeister··on New Details Emerge on the “Highly Modified Drone” That Outran Police Helicopters
120 knots is normal cruise, 140 knots is fast cruise but that's at sea level. This drops off by 3 knots per 1,000' of density altitude. Airfield elevation at Tuscon is ~2400' and it was 58⁰F at 10 p.m. on Feb 9. Which puts density altitude at ground level around 2900', so the cruise speed drops around 9 knots, to 111 kias and 131 kias.

I agree this UAS would need to be IC-powered due to the range and altitude the UAS supposedly reached, but I don't think the speed was as fast as many folks have been thinking.

tutmeister··on Ask HN: What is the right way to test your product idea while having a day job?
Your product is great; I just purchased a commercial license to replace Hotjar last week. Being able to obtain similar levels of analytics whilst self-hosting means we can improve our privacy policy, yet continue to collect useful visitor data to improve our (.gov website) service, as well as avoid being caught in visitor's adblockers, since it is hosted on a subdomain.

tutmeister··on Ask HN: Sub-$1000/mo passive income in 30 days?
Look into some of the Envato websites, CodeCanyon springs to mind as you say you're a proficient programmer. I actually reduce my overhead by using CodeCanyon snippets and GraphicRiver designs where possible and I know a lot of other developers that do that too. It allows me to sell affordable websites without sacrificing my time and money and you can benefit from that. Don't re-do the stuff already there, but think up some simple, but often-needed snippets to sell and you could be onto a small income. Probably not enough to allow for $500 a month, but it's a start. Mobile Apps probably make more if they become popular, but there's a lot more time involved and with Apple, a $99 up-front charge to become a member of their developer's community.
