tus88··on AWS announces forks of Elasticsearch and Kibana
It's a good point. Imagine if one of those open source projects that Elastic uses licensed there own little bit of code under the SSL. Elastic would flip out.
tus88··on Select a muscle and it provides the exercises to workout the selected muscle
Ugh. Promoting isolation exercises should be banned.
tus88··on I no longer trust The Great Suspender
"Shady" take-over of plugins/apps is just a big a suspicious fail as allowing apps to gain access to all contacts on mobile phones.

Google never really cared about user privacy at all.

tus88··on State of JavaScript 2020
I thought it had been renamed Typescript?
tus88··on Licensing changes to Elasticsearch and Kibana
Because you can't fork it and do whatever you want with it.
tus88··on Licensing changes to Elasticsearch and Kibana
> The SSPL restrictions apply when the licensed software is used to provide a service.

Wrong. It only affects code going forward. Elastic can't change the license of existing code.

tus88··on Licensing changes to Elasticsearch and Kibana
It's not open source though.
tus88··on Licensing changes to Elasticsearch and Kibana
> their code

Meaning the entire codebase of the infrastucture that provides the offering. I.e. the underlying code behind AWS. Not a big deal right?

tus88··on Licensing changes to Elasticsearch and Kibana
I wonder what will happen to the AWS ElasticSearch offering.
tus88··on DOSBox-X: Free, cross-platform and complete DOS, Windows 3.x and 9x emulation
WARNING - it's much, much slower than DosBOX due to more accurate emulation. This means it won't run some games fast enough.
tus88··on I logged my activities at 15-minute intervals for the whole year
Where are all the lawyer jokes?
tus88··on From Trotsky to Gödel: The Life of Jean van Heijenoort
One of the strangest communists you've never heard of.
tus88··on Archaeologists uncover ancient street food shop in Pompeii
> ancient equivalent of street food to Roman passersby.

Why "equivalent"? Why can't we just say street food?

tus88··on Unraveling the role of the microbiome in major depressive disorder
Take a guess.
tus88··on Ask HN: Co-founder wants me to leave but won't entertain a buy out offer
> What are my options here?

Maybe you should be asking, what are their options? They can't force you to give away something you own.

tus88··on UK coronavirus variant may be more able to infect children: scientists
Why are they so confident existing vaccines in development will work against the new strain? Isn't that why we get a new flu shot every year, because vaccines don't work against mutated viruses?
tus88··on Nikon Is ending 70 years of camera production in Japan
Wait until AI hits camera, like DLSS. It will be all over then.
tus88··on IMF would use your search history for credit scores
When tin-hatters complain about "globalists" this is what they are talking about.
tus88··on How AltaVista, the first good search engine, fell into the digital abyss
> It is sad in many ways to see what happened to DEC (probably more so than AltaVista). It was such an innovative company back in the 60s and 70s,

They should have merged with a PC make obviously.

> but unlike IBM weren't able to reinvent themselves in first the new 80s world of PCs and then later internet.

Ironically IBM did fail to reinvent itself despite inventing the PC and it's cake was stolen from it.

tus88··on Cyberpunk 2077: How 2020’s biggest video game launch turned into a shambles
Did you expect an RPG to have better gunplay than an FPS?
tus88··on Cyberpunk 2077: How 2020’s biggest video game launch turned into a shambles
Exactly. The problem is simple - CP came out a year too early. It needed a LOT more play-testing and refinement. Unfortunately few studios/published take a true "it's done when it's done" approach.
tus88··on Cyberpunk 2077: How 2020’s biggest video game launch turned into a shambles
It's nothing like Anthem. CP is a good game that was rushed out, Anthem was just bad.
tus88··on No Cookie for You
Title should be "Github admits abusing users with non-essential cookies".
tus88··on Rocky Linux: A CentOS replacement by the CentOS founder
What's wrong with the name? It seems fairly uncontroversial to me.
tus88··on Buy Don't Build
> It’s usually a major mistake, that ends up costing a ton of time and money

LOL this is hilarious. Because outsourcing to consulting firms (cough IBM cough) has never resulted in blow-outs and poor delivery.

Buying almost always means being trapped in a snake-oil contract that requires ongoing consulting costs that quickly outweight the costs of the actual software.

> This can be avoided by making sure that the key differentiators for your business are in-house.

Oh....so you are saying we should build now?

Blogpsam.

tus88··on Slack wanted to stay independent, but was unable to compete with tech giants
> Our free market trades on the assumption that good, innovative products will prevail over less effective ones released by entrenched firms like Microsoft.

What a bizarre statement. The only think the free market assumes is that the market decides. Nothing else.

tus88··on MasterCard to stop processing payments on Pornhub, cites unlawful content
It's not an article, it's a hit piece, written by a known agitator not a journalist at a time when the religious anti PH movement is at it's crescendo.
tus88··on Starship – SN8 – High-Altitude Flight Test
That was awesome. I really thought it was going to blow when it started going sideways...then realized that was all part of the plan. Even the landing explosion was a fitting end to a first flight.
tus88··on 80% of musicians earn less than £200 a year from streaming
Is this like Amazon though where 80% of books and authors are basically unknown amateurs?
