tubularhells··on Ask HN: Why are Brazil's Covid-19 numbers so bad?
Hungary is by far worse, fwiw.

tubularhells··on Whistleblower: Ubiquiti Breach “Catastrophic”
Mikrotik is nice and does all of those things. Just needs actual expertise at network administration to set up. Once done though, it's fire and forget.

tubularhells··on Ask HN: How do you leave a job?
>Definitely they question loyalty.

It's ridiculous to expect loyalty to a company.

tubularhells··on Ask HN: How do you leave a job?
I make sure I leave the work well documented for the one who follows, but I do not put in more effort and time than contractually obliged. I also push back on everything new, and give the reason above. This leaves me without stress, and since I'm leaving, they cannot really do shit about me declining new tasks. If questioned by someone, I ask whether they want to inherit two half-done projects when I'm gone or just one. That puts an end to requests. If at any time some manager's manager tries to strongman me around while on notice period, I delete their emails, block their IM and pretend I haven't seen what they sent me.
tubularhells··on GIMP PyDev
Because it's the equivalent of web developer abstraction creeping into the desktop. First it was electron, now containers. These people do t know how to architect, how to design, nor how to secure applications.

I see flatpack mentioned in a readme, I close the page.
tubularhells··on Ask HN: Anti-vaccine statement by Geert Vanden Bossche?
This is your mind on postmodernism.

Healthcare, worker rights and retirement.
tubularhells··on “When it comes to broadband, America is the original shithole country”
The Big T in Germany has strong ties in the government, both regional and central. They don't have to innovate when they can just block others via lobbying.

Ex Telekom worker here.

tubularhells··on Ask HN: How to build empathy?
I struggled with this my whole life, until a diagnosis of autistic personality at the age of 34. Therapy helps you understand people because you can ask the therapist for the behaviours people expect from others. It's called masking.
tubularhells··on Work events, Zoom Lunches and other forced social activities are driving me nuts
#2 is a retarded idea, don't do that.
tubularhells··on Work events, Zoom Lunches and other forced social activities are driving me nuts
I have realised some years ago that if you quietly stop attending, nobody will notice or care. On monthly town halls at a previous job I routinely went to the toilet as people were gathering, then once the event started for good, I slipped back to my desk or left for a walk. Nobody ever noticed or cared.

The next place, one of those socialising, average loser kind of a colleague asked why I wasn't attending company events and after-hour team buildings, and I told her I had a medical appointment. She didn't press the topic, and stopped asking after 2-3 times.

My strategy for pushy people who ever would ask what kind of an appointment I had (happened once) is to tell them how rude I find them asking such a question. Nobody wants others to think of them as a rude person, since everybody wants to be liked. The person never asked me anything personal ever again, and I like it that way.

tubularhells··on Ask HN: Why there are so many ads on YouTube?
Adaway.
tubularhells··on Ask HN: Why there are so many ads on YouTube?
I see no ads, cookie or GDPR popups, no newsletter annoyances, nothing since I set uBlock Origin full nuclear and just ticked all the boxes.
tubularhells··on Ask HN: Why there are so many ads on YouTube?
This has been answered on the net already. Do your research, it takes 2 minutes to find.
tubularhells··on Ask HN: Why there are so many ads on YouTube?
Newpipe or adaway, depending whether you rooted the phone or not.
tubularhells··on Ask HN: Why there are so many ads on YouTube?
If you are on HN, you should know how to install a PiHole between your router and smart TV. There, no more ads.
tubularhells··on Ask HN: Why there are so many ads on YouTube?
Why don't you use an adblocker?
tubularhells··on Ask HN: Why there are so many ads on YouTube?
Why don't you block ads? What is wrong with you?

Trust me, you sound quite autistic. Seek help, therapy assists in seeing yourself from different angles, and realise life and yourself in ways you haven'tbefore. It helped me become a whole pperson, and move in a better direction.
tubularhells··on Ask HN: Would you buy a disinfection robot for your office?
No.
tubularhells··on Ask HN: How do I find energy to work on hobbies after the work day ends?
Remote work is a blessing. I don't miss the office, not the commute.

Well, that attitude won't get you a FAANG job, no matter how much you think you deserve it. Build a resume, learn lessons of cooperation and humility, and you will eventually get those FAANG offers. If you are just a nobody with an empty resume, your application gets no second looks.

You took away the wrong lesson from his post. But if you are autistic (I get a feeling you are, as so am I) , you should look for institutions who help autistic adults learn social skills. These are dependant on your location, and up for you to find, I'm afraid.

Have you ever built a product yourself? I will be honest with you, I just use the python standard library for algorithms. I don't even remember what kind of sorts there are. They don't matter much in the grand scheme of things. What matters is whether you can build and ship something. This is how Valve evaluates applying engineers too, by the way. Finished project list first.

Build something instead of doing what is the equivalent of CrossFit but for programmers.
