tsestrich··on How much is your life worth?
While fairly introspective, I wasn't really sure what this was trying to say. Is it saying that he doesn't want to charge for anything he does so that he can't be valued?

I instead hope to charge as much as possible for as many things as possible, there-by valuing my life as highly as possible. My life is not non-profit :)

tsestrich··on Ask HN: Getting a survey of customer interest without giving too much away?
That's a good point, and I agree that it's highly unlikely that anyone will have the time or resources to execute an idea I share with them. I would hope that they get excited about the idea though, to the point where they wish they could do it themselves.

I guess what I'm getting out of this is "don't worry about it". I think that as long as I don't go pitching the ideas to a competitor, I'll probably be okay. I guess it also can't hurt to keep developing a little bit more before pitching an idea, so that I have something concrete to show.

tsestrich··on Get Less Done: Stop Being Productive and Enjoy Yourself
Point taken, and that's something I can definitely do
tsestrich··on Get Less Done: Stop Being Productive and Enjoy Yourself
I don't think I can do this, lol.

I tried relaxing without work to do for a week recently during a school break and by the end of it I felt lazy and self-loathing... as if I had spent the whole week doing nothing but watching Judge Judy and eating Cheetos. I just think I enjoy having responsibilities and things to do.

tsestrich··on Google user comment in 2000
I'm 21 years old, but I feel like such a child since the first thing I thought was "Was the internet really that difficult back then"?
tsestrich··on If it Looks Corporate, Change It
At least it introduced me to the "headset hotties" blog, lol. Maybe that's something I should have come across before, but its hilarious
tsestrich··on Ask HN: What language do you think in?
I would say I think in pseudo-code, using natural language to describe the problem in a way that can be converted to code ("for all of these values in this array/container...", etc). That said, I work a lot in C#, so I usually go right to that pretty quickly, if not right away for commonly-solved problems.
tsestrich··on Free browser-based PHP IDE
yeah, i was hoping to try it out today, but i think it must have gotten brought down recently. I'll finally be able to sneak in some work on my pet project while I'm at real work, lol
tsestrich··on Has the rate of technological progress slowed in the past 50 years?
I think we still have a lot of room for progress, but I think it's going to take another leap in technological innovation for that to happen (there's a rapidly approaching point where we just won't be able to make a silicon-based processor any faster).

We'll also, of course, keep finding new applications for current technology, but that's unlikely to be a paradigm-shifter.

I guess you could say that the Internet has done that though to some extent, taking what was basically a medium for exchanging scientific data and turning it into a medium that really connects people on a never-before-seen scale. But I definitely agree with the article in that it is ridiculous to assume that there is some sort of exponential path for technological progress that society is just going to somehow follow. We're really gonna have to work for every step we take

tsestrich··on Assessing the net value of children
I might be crazy, but I believe a pretty significant reason that many people have kids is so that they... can have a family?

I'm also fairly sure that most people are not expecting their kids to make them any money, or go bragging about their hefty ROI from a son who went on to be a successful lawyer.

It's nothing new that kids cost money. Sure, college is a big cost that maybe not everyone was expected to need years and years ago, but in this day and age its more and more likely that students are paying for it themselves to an extent, through either scholarships, loans, or part-time work.

For other expenses, I would think that having kids is almost like "paying it forward". YOUR parents must have spent money on you and your potential siblings throughout your life, so why is it suddenly a huge burden when you're expected to do the same for someone else?

I feel like the article made it seem like having a kid these days was a poor investment decision (which is an understatement of course), and nothing more. I'd almost feel sorry for his son, which he seems to give absolutely no credit to for being a success.

tsestrich··on Augmented Reality in a Contact Lens
In reality, I have a hard time imagining that anyone would be able to distinguish anything meaningful from a display on a contact lens. That's like suggesting that you could read a printed word on a contact lens today. You wouldn't be able to focus on something that is directly on your eyeball.

I think in addition to the technical challenge of actually getting something like this working in a contact lens, the issue of physically being able to make use of such a device needs to be addressed.

To those suggesting a pair of glasses be used instead, I think this is a more practical suggestion for both reasons (the biological and technical). If I try really hard I'm barely able to focus on something as close as my glasses.

tsestrich··on Researchers now able to stop, then restart light
Wow, this is one of the coolest articles I've read in a while. I wish they showed a picture of something other than a red light being shined right into the camera lens.
tsestrich··on Augmented Reality in a Contact Lens
The thought of putting a tinted contact in my eye to change my eye color still makes me nervous... jeeze.
tsestrich··on Ask HN: How do you do realtime
Well, the idea behind "realtime" as it pertains to Twitter is that it is about events happening that minute. While your page might not be refreshed immediately to see new information, you COULD refresh it yourself to view it. That's real time, versus something like a blog (except a live blog of course) where the information is not time sensitive or about something that happened that second.

Pages like Twitter or Gmail use AJAX to retrieve new information from a server without refreshing your whole page. Twitter does do this (or did, at least when viewing search results and it would tell you how many new results there have been since the last page refresh). The polling here I assume happens in a simple loop that probably iterates every set number of seconds.

tsestrich··on Ask HN: I'm resigning soon, any suggestions what to build on my own?
A modern day version of:

1.Quit job

2.Ask HN

3. ???

4.Profit!

Love it :)

tsestrich··on Lab creates fake DNA evidence
I like how they conveniently drop the fact that they have a test (that they can sell) for the fake DNA that they created :)

I don't think that this will in any way invalidate DNA evidence any time in the near future. Besides, I can't imagine anyone taking the time to prepare or purchase replicated DNA except for high-profile crimes.

Also, as a former Bio undergrad, I'm pretty sure I couldn't pull something like this off, lol. Maybe that's just me

tsestrich··on What Kate saw in Silicon Valley
Very interesting to get a "third-party" perspective on things, having never gotten to work out in that environment myself.
tsestrich··on PDF widely misunderstood by developers
As a soon-to-be graduating college student, this just makes me more and more sad that my tastefully yet interestingly laid-out resume will be reduced to a set of data that I could have spent 5 minutes putting into an email or a web form. I guess it's nice to hand out at a job fair though...
tsestrich··on You're a little company, now act like one
I love the advice given in this article. In working on putting together a little company of my own, I often find myself looking at what seems to be "accepted" and trying to steer in that direction. This creates a lot of fluff in my language and, honestly, I end up with something that I don't think I'd even be interested in trying.

Keeping it simple and honest always sounded like a good idea, but the fact that people have shown that it can work is a big confidence booster.

tsestrich··on Venture Capital in Danger
Not only would there be costs associated with complying with regulations, but simply from a capitalist standpoint there is little reason (as discussed in the article) for the government to have a say in VC practices. Investors know the risk they are undertaking, have a solid financial standing, and are not trading in public securities.

I feel like the article wanted to point out the side-affects of this new legislation as it applies to VC funding. I don't think the intention of the law was to necessarily monitor VC operations, but with such a broad regulation that's what's going to happen.

Keep in mind though that at the same time there are some things the government is doing to promote small business, such as providing billions in funding for the Small Business Association. Not all bad I guess, but still not a fan...

tsestrich··on How One Article Increased Sales 22% - From a small e-commerce owner
I'm gonna have to agree that the format of the article had me jumping around and genuinely trying hard to figure out where to even start reading.

I like the message though, since it does show how so many things can help market a product online.
