trosi··on Memento mori
I lived in Siena for a while, and every now and then I would drop by St. Catherine's crypt for a not so gentle memento:

Rough translation:

As you are, so I once was As I am, so you will be

trosi··on So you want to study mathematics
It's true that a standard undergraduate curriculum in mathematics will contain a lot of analysis (including calculus), a lot of ODEs/PDEs and some algebra. But if I wanted to get someone interested in math I would also point them towards some of the more fun (and less known stuff), such as combinatorics, probability, topology, differential geometry and number theory. Some of these are also much more applicable today than, say, complex analysis.
trosi··on What to know about the stock market (2007)
I don't know the answer, but I think it would make sense to consider which offer came in first:

First case: you ask for 100 and then I bid 105 --> transaction clears at 100, the ask price

Second case: I bid 105 and then you ask for 100 --> transaction clears at 105, the bid price

This is because I implicitly think about bid offers as "I want to buy this for at most X dollars" and ask offers as "I want to sell this for at least X dollars".

I might be completely wrong though.

trosi··on Building a modern home in the woods
Care to share which company you bought it from? I am also based in Europe and have been thinking about a similar project.
trosi··on Milan confirms new cycling network linking 80% of the city to bike paths
Giving how well public transportation works in Milan and how expensive it is to own and park a car in the city center, I am surprised at how many people still insist on driving.

Personally I can't wait for reserved bike lanes everywhere. Milan is small in size if compared to other European main cities, you could probably bike across the city in half an hour

trosi··on NixOS on Framework Laptop
Can't wait till I'm able to buy a Framework laptop from Europe. I even checked on eBay US (which offers customs services for international shipping) but prices are too high at the moment
trosi··on There Is a Tennis Ball Shortage Too Now
Very true. We need to find a way to subsidize "good journalism" or to convince people to care about it.
trosi··on Husband of Amazon employee sentenced to prison for insider trading Amazon stock
I agree with the first part, but it doesn't look like he was poor (the husband I mean). He had a lot of money and he wanted more
trosi··on Sublime Text 4
> For example, if I am using Julia/R I want side panel that shows all my current variables in memory.

Mind sharing how you do this in R? Thanks!

trosi··on Researchers chart path to drastically lower administrative costs of health care
I'll bring an example for the sake of comparison. In Italy the path to becoming a physician involves a six year degree focused entirely on medicine (so not a bachelor), followed by a specialized degree of variable length (4-6 years depending on the chosen specialty) during which you practice in a hospital and study for exams at the same time, mostly the former. Entrance exams are required at both levels and acceptance rates are very low. Also, many students end up needing 1-2 extra years to complete it all.
trosi··on The election of the doge
Well the room is huge (52.70m x 24.66m x 11.50m), but the painting makes it look even bigger.

trosi··on Facebook account now required to login to Oculus devices
He probably means that something with similar implications has happened a lot of times already and we should have already learned the lesson
trosi··on We Don’t Need to Work So Much (2015)
But he said specifically that he earns 10-20% less than his friends (and probably a lot less than the one who founded his company), so in fact he can afford less than them. It's just that he is content with that much.

On the other hand, many private companies don't contemplate (on don't look favorably upon) employees who work part time or anything below the standard 40 hoours/week, so if you do work in the private sector you don't have much of a choice. If everyone was magically allowed to reduce his/her working hours and salary by the same percentage I wonder what would be the outcome.

trosi··on How much free time do you have?
I'd say an average of 30 minutes/day of gym/fitness is the bare minimum, but even double that can be very beneficial in many respects. You should find the time
trosi··on Use YouTube to improve your English pronunciation
Can you elaborate a bit on why it's a weird response? What would be more appropriate? Non-native speaker here
trosi··on Facebook reveals its cryptocurrency Libra
I think it's a reference to the Roman libra, which used to be both a monetary and weight measure.
trosi··on While iPhone sales remain stagnant, Apple services hit $10B in revenue
Of course not. Nobody is saying that revenue is stagnant. Only iPhone sales are. It seems correct to me.
trosi··on While iPhone sales remain stagnant, Apple services hit $10B in revenue
So it's a good thing that unit sales haven't risen?
trosi··on Apple has removed Infowars podcasts from iTunes
It's a bit more than that. Censorship violates freedom of speech, but it does not imply imprisonment
trosi··on Linux touchpad like a Macbook: goal worth pursuing?
Wouldn't it be easier to just wipe the drive before TSA?
trosi··on Linux touchpad like a Macbook: goal worth pursuing?
Same here, I would gladly pay a subscription or send a generous donation to the Kickstarter if it happens.
trosi··on Apple rejects Valve’s Steam Link game streaming app over ‘business conflicts’
Google was fined for $2 billions in Europe for promoting their own services in search results. You could argue that Google search is theirs and they can do whatever they want with it, but luckily since they are a big player (close to being the only one in search) there are antitrust laws that prevent that.

Apple is in a similar positon. A lot customers depend on iOS devices and I am not sure Apple should be allowed to exclude competitors from the App Store at its discretion.

trosi··on Galaxy S9 Slower Than iPhone X
At least until the iPhone's battery wears down
trosi··on Previewing Android P
Or you could get a used Pixel 1 on eBay for ~300 euros
trosi··on iPhones may shut down in cold weather
How frequent is it? I've seen it happen to a couple of friends this year and the temperature was barely below 0 Celsius. It must be worse up there.
trosi··on Our rights to EU citizenship are worth fighting for – despite Brexit
> European citizenship confers a number of privileges: the right to live in and move freely between member states, the right to diplomatic and consular assistance from other member states, and the right to participate in elections to the European parliament. The shared assumption of the European Union and the UK government is that Brexit will mean British citizens will automatically forfeit these rights.

I'm having a hard time imagining how it could be otherwise. The EU and the UK could certainly come to terms on some of these issues but I seriously doubt that UK citizens will be allowed move freely between member states if the converse is not allowed as well (i.e. EU citizens entering and leaving freely the UK). I seriously doubt that UK citizens will be represented in the European parliament.

trosi··on Snap Revenue Surges 72% on User Growth, Advertising Gains
As with iMessage vs WhatsApp, I think this is more of a divide based on location rather than age. In the US Snapchat might be prevalent because iOS is prevalent. My guess is in the rest of the world Instagram dominates and is gaining further ground.
trosi··on Uber Paid Hackers to Delete Stolen Data on 57M People
They agreed to pay and nobody heard about it for a long time. I'd say they asked for the right amount
trosi··on Snap Inc. Third Quarter 2017 Results
WhatsApp has so many more users (maybe ten times as many?) than Snap
trosi··on iMac Pro
