trinovantes··on A Response to Jacob Kaplan-Moss’s “Incompetent but Nice”
A poor initial perception of performance, e.g. blunder during interview, may also set the employee up for long term failure due to the Pygmalion effect. For example, they may less likely be chosen for future easy/high recognition projects that are essential for promotion packages.
trinovantes··on Rejected due to not knowing how display:block and block-inline work
I think this is the original version:

trinovantes··on Microsoft and Nvidia Announce Expansive New Gaming Deal
Starcraft and Heros of the Storm have both ceased development and I doubt Microsoft is interested in reviving them

But I can see them reusing those IP as universes for future games just because it's easier to reuse a well known IP than creating from scratch

trinovantes··on Launch HN: Neptyne (YC W23) – A programmable spreadsheet that runs Python
How does it interact with libraries that need the file system? e.g. Can I use requests-cache?
trinovantes··on Swiss to vote on preventing cashless society, pressure group says
Processing cash also has non-zero cost (labor to count, secure, transport) but I guess it's still slightly cheaper than digital

In addition, businesses that handle most transactions in cash, at least here in Canada, are notorious for tax evasion

That being said, I'm not a fan of payment data being sold to ad companies

trinovantes··on A lightweight (~5000 LOC) Python interpreter for game engines
It was pretty hard for me to get used to Lua's 1-based index and everything treated as a table

I think it's easier to mentally map concepts between C and Python than Lua

trinovantes··on Ask HN: Where do people meet up socially at least once a week?
I think the decline of the "third place" in modern society is a big contributor to loneliness

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_place

Personally, I've found a pseudo third space on Discord - my friends and I share a common chatroom that we just hop in whenever we're free during the lockdowns to chat and sometimes play games

trinovantes··on Ask HN: Why is it so difficult to find quality Windows apps?
Microsoft keeps reinventing the recommended GUI framework every few years and leaves their documentation in a convoluted mess (win32, WinForms, WPF, WinUI, etc.)

I also suspect it's because the demographic of Mac users are generally richer and more likely to pay for software

trinovantes··on The pool of talented C++ developers is running dry
They probably want the performance of C++ without the learning curve of Rust

It's not like C++20 is completely different. There's just a lot more utilities in the stdlib so hopefully less raw pointer magic.

trinovantes··on Ask HN: How can I check if a large number is prime?
Haven't kept up with cryptography research but I think msieve is still the current state of the art integer factorization software that's open source
trinovantes··on TypeScript 5.0 Beta
I'm surprised decorators are going to be a new JS feature. They look simple and helpful but every non-trivial project in other langauges that I've seen using decorators are a quagmire to understand and debug.
trinovantes··on Rust Unpopular Opinion
I really wish C++ also had a standard package manager like cargo or npm
trinovantes··on This Voice Doesn't Exist – Generative Voice AI
There's already an AI streamer on Twitch

trinovantes··on Epochalypse
Downside is you lose a fair amount of performance switching to 64 bit floats especially on low-end hardware
trinovantes··on LearnCPP: Website devoted to teaching you how to program in C++
I haven't used Java since school so I'm curious about modern Java. Do you need to worry about circular references preventing garbage collection or are there easy tools to detect such cases?
trinovantes··on All I want for Christmas is these seven TypeScript improvements
Python and Ruby are implemented in C, not interpreted languages

CoffeeScript simply compiles code and does not perform static analysis

tsc is implemented in JS and performs static analysis which makes it (unsurprisingly) slow. I suppose you can make the argument that tsc should have an early exit for empty files but that's just unnecessary bloat to the code base.

Surprisingly, tsc doesn't have an option to skip type checking [1]. The best you can do is run using --skipLibCheck to skip checking node_modules.

[1] https://github.com/microsoft/TypeScript/issues/29651

trinovantes··on All I want for Christmas is these seven TypeScript improvements
tsc is the reference implementation written in JS so of course it's slow. It has to boot up the nodejs runtime first

Use swc or esbuild if you want fast TS compile times and use your IDE or eslint for type checking during development

trinovantes··on Ask HN: Where to find performance engineering work?
Video games or game engine development, especially studios that work on console games

HFT firms also do low level optimizations

trinovantes··on The scourge of job title inflation
Doesn't explain why Canada job listings are the only country in the world that uses the "developer" title
trinovantes··on The scourge of job title inflation
It's a protected title in most jurisdictions but it's seldom enforced or have exceptions for "software engineer"

Although I've heard Professional Engineers Ontario made enough noise awhile back and big tech companies had to rename their local job descriptions to "developer"

https://careers.google.com/jobs/results/?location=Waterloo,%... (only "developer")

https://careers.google.com/jobs/results/?location=New%20York... (only "engineer")

trinovantes··on Shortage of affordable housing guarantees that some people will become homeless
The rental market in Toronto is just as insane. People nowadays need to offer 6-12 months worth of rent upfront to make a competitive offer. Good luck climbing out of homelessness if you don't have a $10-20k deposit.
trinovantes··on Ask HN: Someone is proxy-mirroring my website, can I do anything?
They are probably using some public cloud service so simply banning all IPs from cloud ASNs [1] will usually be enough. Downside is you're also banning any users using VPNs

trinovantes··on T-code – A protocol for implementing UART serial communications to an adult toy
Streamers sync donation amount to vibration amount

Or so I've heard

trinovantes··on What’s the point of maths research? It’s behind tomorrow’s breakthroughs
Had we discovered the fast fourier transform sooner, we could've avoided the nuclear arms race as the US/USSR would've been able to observe the other's underground nuclear detonation waves with 1960s computers
trinovantes··on Migrating from Vue 2 to Svelte
`ArticleTypes` should be automatically available in the template just from importing it if you use script setup

Otherwise you also need to return it in the setup function (composition) or store a local copy of it in the data field (options)

trinovantes··on The best Go framework: no framework?
For security/safety sensitive tasks, you should be using checklists e.g. [1] so you don't need to remember. Pilots use pre-takeoff checklists to reduce chances of human error. Likewise, you shouldn't assume the framework will give you proper defaults.

trinovantes··on UK ditches ban on 'legal but harmful' online content
Group A wants to say X that Group B doesn't like. Group B sends massive amount of unrelated messages into the Twitterverse using the same hashtags to bury Group A's message. Do you leave it alone and thus allow Group A's freedom of speech be effectively suppressed or intervene and suppress Group B? Either way, somebody's free speech is being violated.
trinovantes··on The best Go framework: no framework?
Isn't it just prepending "while(1);" to your responses? If that's all you need, it seems like a dependency overkill
