tricolon··on How we learned to stop worrying and love campus surveillance
His name was Aaron Swartz.
tricolon··on Can I disable all data collection from my vehicle?
Because Rivian doesn't have a mode for _just_ lane-keeping. There's Adaptive Cruise Control (which maintains speed) and there's Highway Assist (which maintains speed and position in the lane). Highway Assist only works on certain mapped highways.
tricolon··on Ford kills the All-Electric F-150
> The idea that there might be an all-electric f150 hanging out in 40 years is, frankly, laughable.

Why is it laughable? I'm not following your argument.

tricolon··on California DMV approves map increase in Waymo driverless operations
Looking at the city limits, I don't understand why East Palo Alto isn't called North Palo Alto instead.
tricolon··on New colors without shooting lasers into your eyes
I have red-green weakness but only saw a lighter green around the circle as it became smaller.
tricolon··on A Typology of Canadianisms
Mine's listening for proe-ject instead of prah-ject.
tricolon··on The $25k car is going extinct?
I'd never seen the word "subvention" before. Today I learned it's another way to say "subsidy".
tricolon··on Widespread power outage in Spain and Portugal
I've been signing "CHECK ID :)" for several years now and it's only a few times a year that someone notices.
tricolon··on Liero – Sling'n'shoot Worms Game
Wait a minute, that sounds like an old friend of mine. Were his initials ŠP?
tricolon··on Can affluence and affordable housing coexist in Colorado’s rockies?
Not everyone can vote or is registered to vote.
tricolon··on Mullvad VPN was subject to a search warrant – customer data not compromised
I would half expect them to sue the computers for obstruction of justice... and then just keep them.
tricolon··on Ask HN: Why are ringtones not interesting anymore?
At least for me, most incoming calls are spam. If it's important, I will either anticipate it or the caller will leave a voicemail. In the past several months, I think I've received one unanticipated call from a friend.
tricolon··on Ask HN: Why are ringtones not interesting anymore?
Early thirties here: my friends and I do not call people except for older relatives on occasion. We've kept our phones on vibrate for a decade and a half now.

We do, however, know our own phone numbers, and asking a cute stranger or a new friend for their number is still a thing.

tricolon··on Can the American mall survive?
and then there's the World Trade Center
tricolon··on Grade Inflation: Over 82% of Harvard '22 Graduating With Over a 3.7 (A-) GPA
And each department (and sometimes class or professor) has their own policy about whether they ever grant an A+.
tricolon··on It's December and it hasn't snowed in Denver yet. That's never been recorded
How odd. West Wash Park and Boulder got some sleet as well as actual snowflakes, but nothing stuck around at all.
tricolon··on It's December and it hasn't snowed in Denver yet. That's never been recorded
That happened this year... but only up in the mountains.
tricolon··on Beyond Smart
> But women aren’t inventing, discovering or creating in proportion to their increased professional participation.

Can you back up your claim?

tricolon··on Altitude and child development
I haven't found exact data for the contribution of ICE vehicles to PM 2.5 levels in Denver, but I've found some evidence of ozone [0] and carbon dioxide [1] contributions in Denver being around 30%, as well as contribution to PM 2.5 in "developed countries" being 25–30% [2].

Later edit: this EPA paper from 25 years ago [3] says "Vehicle exhaust was the largest PM 2.5 carbon contributor, constituting ~85% of PM 2.5 carbon at sites in the Denver metropolitan area".

tricolon··on Sid Meier and the meaning of ‘Civilization’
Civ III was released in 2001, but I feel the same way.
tricolon··on Most and Least Affordable Places to Buy a Home
The thing is... it has chosen not to for the longest time. I don't expect the height restrictions or Open Space to go away any time soon.
tricolon··on The global chip shortage is starting to have consequences
Can you elaborate a bit? I am quite familiar with the various iPods but quite unfamiliar with cars.
tricolon··on Car Connectivity Consortium
I would love to drive a dumb car that doesn't pollute the air. Alas.
tricolon··on Don’t wait for billionaires to sell their stock. Tax their riches now
I agree, but I'd like to point out the US exit tax, which does exactly that.
tricolon··on Svalbard's Alcohol Quotas
Åland is in the EU, but the EU tax rules don't apply: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_member_state_territori...
tricolon··on Bumble S-1
I think it's highly dependent on where you are.

This is my experience of the three...

Hinge: I talk to people, and sometimes that leads to a date

Tinder: I talk to people, but no dates happen

Bumble: Nothing happens.

tricolon··on Signal WhatsApp Chats Import
Have you contacted their support? I did, and they informed me they'd fixed the bug in the app update that was published the next day. It might have been a coincidence, but at the very least they were responsive and knowledgeable.

(I had the same issue migrating from an iPhone SE to an iPhone 12 mini.)

tricolon··on Ticketmaster will pay $10M for hacking rival ticket seller
just pointing out that his name is Aaron Swartz
tricolon··on The unexpected rule of adjectival ordering in English (2016)
"lovely" is an opinion, so it fits the rule to put it in front, right?
tricolon··on Stripe Treasury
It looks much less intimidating than my Honeywell North full facepiece respirator, which I've worn in public.
