treyp··on So Who Really Owns Facebook? (Chart)
It's funny that Bono and his 1.5% made it, but Microsoft and their 1.6% did not.

From the source link (reface.me, which actually got the picture from twitpic): "Not specifically included in the infographic are Microsoft’s 1.6% stake, Hong Kong billionaire Li-Ka Shing’s 0.8%, TriplePoint Capital (though as a debt provider they own nothing), and Accel Partners’ investment."

does this apply to SMS too? if the phone gets an incoming text, will it disconnect the internet?
treyp··on Twitter Displaying Expanded Short URLs Using 301 Lookup
similarly, search.twitter.com has had this using "(expand)" on the end of links for some time. i'm not sure if this was part of the original acquisition for that service or if they added it in after.
treyp··on Twitter Displaying Expanded Short URLs Using 301 Lookup
kind of. it's not done on the front end (js) but rather using some service on the backend.

the phrasing of that is a bit weird, but they probably test until they no longer get a 301 or 302 redirect and save the result. they print this result on the front end as a title for the link and as an HTML5 data attribute "expanded-url" on the link.

i'm actually curious, too. did a new version come out or something?

the data used is not based on IPs, but on user-submitted "current cities" instead, as mentioned in the blog post
treyp··on Facebook intern visualizes friendships, draws world map
the lack of china is pretty interesting. russia is practically non-existent too, but it's much larger (especially with this map projection) with a much smaller population.
treyp··on Let's make the web faster: Tools to discover and improve your site performance
i'd have to disagree. a ton of the slowdown in modern sites is due to lack of front end optimization. optimizing CSS rules is probably a waste of time, but the other basics (outlined by Steve Souders) can make a huge difference. as he says, 80% of the time is spent on the front end.

a lot of web sites and apps that depend on the database are aware that this is the bottleneck and optimize for that without giving the front end much consideration.

go look at the waterfall chart for techcrunch.com and tell me where you think their problem is.

the psychological concept behind what you're describing is called "diffusion of responsibility"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diffusion_of_responsibility

apartment buildings have burned down because nobody called the fire department, assuming someone else would do it the entire time.

when i was on a recent trip talking with a tour guide, the guide told me that they limit each group to around fifty people not because they can't handle it, but because they actually make less in tips in larger groups. the same applies here -- nobody tips because everyone assumes that the others will tip.

treyp··on Why cant Google acquire Wikipedia?
Wikipedia wouldn't be open to an acquisition for the same reason they're against putting advertising on their site -- it'd ruin their neutrality.

And also, IIRC, rumor has it Google attempted to acquire Wikipedia a long time ago but was rebuffed for this very reason.

treyp··on Google to use HTML5 in Gmail
It's great that they're using HTML5 for their purposes, but unfortunately they still rank among the worst for supporting HTML in the actual emails. http://www.email-standards.org/

You can't even include background images in GMail.

treyp··on How can I write an interface like Gmail?
if you can map these hashes to actual URLs, you can get rid of hashes entirely by using HTML5's history methods. see: https://developer.mozilla.org/en/DOM/Manipulating_the_browse... you can fall back on hashes for browsers without support.

the first implementation i've seen of this is in Flickr. i was amazed when i ran into it yesterday. you have to be signed in to preview the new photo pages, but the zoomed/lightboxed photo pages use HTML5 history in compatible browsers and fall back when they can't. their JS is viewable at: http://l.yimg.com/g/combo.gne?j/history-manager.js.v90829.14

treyp··on We are giving out water
isn't that due to actual full capacity (restaurants) and fire code (clubs)? i don't think either one has the ability to schedule their customers throughout the day or take another approach to reservations.

treyp··on Google ditches Windows on security concerns
but this was rumored to be a zero-day attack, which means nobody knew about the exploit so it was as-of-yet unpatched. even if they we're running goobuntu with the full capability of patching the source and deploying fixes, a zero-day attack would have made it through in the beginning. switching operating systems is not going to secure against zero-day attacks.

treyp··on FarmVille Juggernaut Zynga Might Leave Facebook Soon
while visiting my mom for mother's day, she just told me that zynga and facebook are having disagreements. shocked that she knew this, i let her keep talking without interrupting her. (she's the type who doesn't know what a browser is, so i had no idea how she knew about this tech company relationship. i wondered if zynga was telling their users.)

she explained how her and her farmville friends have been protesting facebook. she was happy because once they "got facebook to change something by a certain deadline." (not sure what facebook change this was, but obviously it was a coincidence.) then she explained why -- "it's so annoying when you go to facebook and it's all of these things about people being friends with friends. who cares? i have to click something like 'see related stories' to see all my farmville notifications. it's a total mess with all that stuff about friends in there."

basically, my mom doesn't think anything of facebook's core product. it gets in her way. ("some of the people in our farmville/mafia wars groups have left facebook because of how annoying it is!") she doesn't know that friends are supposed to be people that you know, or that it's a site about keeping up to date with people. she just knows that it's a place to play farmville and mafia wars, and the rest is the fluff.

treyp··on My MacBook Pro runs JavaScript 26.7x as fast as my iPad
you should have put 'fast' in quotes.

for those who haven't watched it, it's a video about how awful the HTML5 experience is on the iPad so far, not only because of speed but because developers haven't developed for the touch events.

treyp··on H.264 Already Won—Makes Up 66 Percent Of Web Videos
sorry, but that doesn't mean that there's a war with a single winner who has already won. people are encoding videos like this because the popular ways of playing videos are through flash and through the iphone.

once HTML5 video picks up, if a major browser (firefox) doesn't support h.264, we'll probably see people encode more than one format, unless something else gains widespread player support fast (vp8, i'm looking at you).

i don't think h.264 is going away, but i don't think it's surely a lone winner going forward.
