trekky1700··on My Roommate's a Genius
I think in the end, the best way to overcome it is to just run at it. The screw it, let's do it mentality really helps me kickstart physical projects. I look at where I am, where I need to be and do/buy whatever it takes.
trekky1700··on Amazon Prime Air
I'd be more concerned with other folks taking the drone. Giving Amazon my address and then damaging the drone would be foolish.
trekky1700··on Amazon Prime Air
A driver and a truck is a lot larger and completely different from a smaller autonomous device.

And apparently they do occasionally: http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2013/11/25/search-underway-af... http://www.wjla.com/articles/2013/01/ups-driver-robbed-polic... http://www.ksdk.com/story/news/2013/10/20/3091049/ http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/delco/Cops-UPS-driver-kid...

This just makes the robbings easier, as you don't have to deal with a human driver. Much less risk involved, and lower prison sentences when you're not threatening a human and just stealing property.

trekky1700··on Amazon Prime Air
I think that would be the most amazing thing ever. Skies filled with drone battles between various online retailers and pirates trying to steal the cargoes. Imagine Black Friday.

This is a future I look forward to.

I personally had no problem importing the famed video of Obama beating a tax payer to death with a quadcopter, though your mileage may vary.
trekky1700··on Toast Sandwich
That looks pretty amazing, I'm rather tempted to try it.

I wonder how they'll stop this from being abused. From shooting them down with pellet guns to capturing them as they land.
trekky1700··on A Warning: Do not turn in illegal files you found to the police.
Their own research, he called the police three times to see the response he would get, and the third time they came to his house and found nothing amiss, they arrested him. jokes
trekky1700··on A Warning: Do not turn in illegal files you found to the police.
It sounds like the type of story you'd tell to try to stop people from doing the right thing in situations like this.
trekky1700··on Government Chemist Tampered With 40,000 Cases
Which is a truly disparaging fact, while a human life may not be priceless, putting a value on it draws a very interesting ethical line in the sand. I agree with you, but I would say the life of any human should be worth a hell of a lot and the idea of taking one should be met with the utmost seriousness and avoided at all costs.

The last thing this planet needs is more death and killing.

trekky1700··on Government Chemist Tampered With 40,000 Cases
Unless there was a death penalty administered due to this, she has not deprived anyone of "life" in the sense suggested. She denied their freedom, and this is a grave injustice, but not one fit for a death penalty. How savage and petty that would be.
trekky1700··on Government Chemist Tampered With 40,000 Cases
By god, is the human race so savage that we resort to killing so quickly. This is a life, something some people would consider priceless. Not something you can view arithmetically, calculating the hours in damage caused versus somebody's time left.
trekky1700··on Bitcoins: The Second Biggest Ponzi Scheme in History
I agree with this. People are concerned with wealth distribution in the physical world, while in the bitcoin world one man owns nearly 10% of all money. The fact that this man is its creator is even more dubious.

This is the equivalent of one American, someone like the head of the federal reserve owning 1.05 trillion US dollars. Even if one day we'll have 21 million Bitcoins out there, that's still around 5% of all wealth being owned by one man, the currencies creator. Sounds crazy to me.

trekky1700··on Carl Sagan: We Humans Are Capable Of Greatness
I think with the number of negative stories on HN about how everything is going, we occasionally need to take a break and ponder something like this.
trekky1700··on Fast And Furious Death In Fiery Car Crash
Brace yourselves, the Fast and Furious puns are coming.
trekky1700··on The fight against sexism is not a free pass
Obvious in that it is obviously poor English, if you want to ignore the gender issue altogether. "He" has a specific definition as a pronoun, versus using "one".
trekky1700··on The fight against sexism is not a free pass
I wouldn't even call it offensive. I don't get where that's even coming from. It's not offensive, it's just simply incorrect phrasing. It's poor English if you will.
trekky1700··on The last moments of Lac-Mégantic
Our reliance on oil is already there, whether you're building pipelines or additional oil carrying railroad cars and running extra trains.
trekky1700··on The fight against sexism is not a free pass
Things that are obvious: 1. Gender neutral language is obviously and undoubtedly preferable. 2. The changes would have been incredibly easy to implement, the work was already done.

I can't think of a good reason not to accept the pull request. It all seems like such a simple problem getting blown way out of proportion.

trekky1700··on Spike Lee responds to 'stolen' poster designer
The least he could do is look into what happened, he has the power to easily do so.
trekky1700··on A Prediction: Bitcoin Is Doomed to Fail
If you're valuing everything in dollars, setting your price in dollars, and converting to and from dollars, why not just use dollars. I think this is the leap BitCoin is yet to make. When we no longer have to convert it and compare it to dollars.

It has loads of benefits over using the dollar, but a lot of those benefits are lost the second you're having it exchanged.

For instance, if I wanted to use bitcoin for contracting, my clients would have to convert their dollars into bitcoins, then I'd accept the bitcoins smoothly and easily, and then I'd have to exchange them (sell them) back for dollars to buy groceries and pay for the bus. Whereas right now, I get an Interac e-transfer and in less than 30 seconds I have money I can go to the store with, and it cost the sender only a dollar in fees. Sure, it's taxable, but the second I convert it from bit coins it's trackable anyway.

I definitely think this is a model we're going to see a lot more of in the future, but Bitcoin with it's thousand dollar and rising valuation and constant fluctuations is very difficult to get behind and actively use. And with the number of people, just of the people I know, who bought in hoping to cash out, there might be quite the tumble on the way. Who knows though, it will be interesting to watch, that's for sure.

trekky1700··on 62% of 16-24s prefer books as physical products
I prefer paper to computers in most cases. I prefer reading fiction on an ereader because it's easier to pickup where I left off and switch between devices. Anything I'd read cover to cover I prefer ebooks for. Reference materials in the form of books I much prefer paper because I find it easier to reference back, but I buy them almost exclusively in ebook format because it's much cheaper. Notes I prefer paper, just because of the much more precise doodling/handwriting ability. If I could use a tablet with the same precision and feeling that I could get from paper, I'd switch notes too. But technologies not there yet.
trekky1700··on Jolla
Anyone else really distracted by the extremely messy desks. Who honestly leaves a wet, browning apple core just sitting on their desk. That's just going to be a sticky bloody mess later.
trekky1700··on Vote Now: Who Should Be Time's Person of the Year? Edward Snowden
I'd nominate Bill Gates, he's done more in the past year to support and make actual change and improve the world than anyone on the list. Then again, not exactly newsworthy.
trekky1700··on UK Prime Minister: We have put in place Internet filters to block extremism
End of days big brother talk aside, it will be interesting to see how this is actually used. Speculation aside, this could be an interesting case study in internet censorship and government responsibility.
trekky1700··on “MongoDB is dead. Long live Postgresql”
This just makes me wonder why they chose Mongo in the first place. It sounds like they didn't really consider their needs when initially choosing databases. Mongo has some benefits that when properly implemented far outweigh the negatives. At the same time, it's still relatively young, and doesn't have the "maturity of process" that makes older SQL engines so easy to manage/implement. Eventually, I'm sure, Mongo will solve these issues and be a great database for those who need to utilize its many virtues.
trekky1700··on The Year the Monarch Didn’t Appear
Ironically, where I live in Canada, I've been noticing more and more monarchs (and their close cousin the viceroy) each year in my gardens and the milkweed fields. Perhaps some change in environment/temperature is causing this. Or maybe they just like free healthcare.

trekky1700··on What's Wrong With the Latest Beastie Boys Lawsuit
Did Weird Al have to get permission for his song parodies? This is essentially a parody, though I don't know how the law applies differently if it's made for a commercial. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. Anyone know how it legally differs from other "same beat, different lyrics" songs?
trekky1700··on The Long Shadow of Chinese Blacklists on American Academe
PRC sure does seem to be compensating for something with this whole "power" thing and it's paranoia with people undermining it. The entire world just needs to calm down with this whole "power" thing, because frankly, it's pointless. Fighting for control and influence over a portion of a thin crusty liveable layer of a tiny molten marble flying through a deadly vacuum around an average star on the outer edge of a spiral arm of an average galaxy. Think about that and then about what the fuck are people fighting over. That's why the science and technology side of Hacker News is so much more interesting. Scientists have known of our insignificance for ages. Politicians still haven't realized, and perhaps never will. It's like what Edgar Mitchell said, you'd just like to take them by the scruff of the neck to the moon and show them the Earth and say "Look at that you son of a bitch".
