trekky1700··on Moscow retaliates against Western sanctions with export bans
For some reason, the linked article claims the Netherlands has a Gini coefficient of 0.902 but the linked source claims a Gini coefficient of 0.281, significantly lower.

I can find no other sources claiming a Dutch Gini coefficient higher than 0.3 at any point in recent history. A Gini coefficient of 0.902 is practically unheard of, perhaps the article was written in error? Seems strange to put so much effort into writing an article without checking the source or questioning the number.

By comparison, Russia's Gini coefficient is 0.375 with the noted caveat that it can be very hard to track the true wealth of the most powerful Russians. The United States is 0.414 according to same source.

trekky1700··on Toyota Research Institute head says full autonomous driving is “not even close”
From what a pilot told me, I believe the A320 he flies can take off, fly, and land totally on its own. I'm sure the same is true for other planes.

Also, if I recall correctly, he said in certain conditions it's against regulations for a pilot to be manually controlling the aircraft, such as landings in high winds.

trekky1700··on Hacked Raspberry Pi turned into artificial pancreas
I've thought of this but am too worried a floating point number error or a problem with division could cause an automated fatal dose of insulin to actually do it.

I also have a bad Diet Coke habit. Drink cans and cans a day. I hear Elon Musk and Bill Gates also drink copious amounts. I wonder what it is about Diet Coke that's so addictive.

They didn't just enter an unlocked door. They're smashing GitHub's windows, kicking GitHub's dog and flipping over furniture.
trekky1700··on Tokyo WWII firebombing, the most deadly bombing raid, remembered 70 years on
How are death camps, the specific targeting of civilians, medical experimentation on detainees, burying prisoners alive and even cannibalism covered under "war of conquest". When does it become genocide? How is it any different (if not worse for its unparalleled scale) than what the Nazis did?

They didn't just target Chinese civilians, they targeted the civilians of every nation they invaded. This includes the British civilians in Singapore and Hong Kong who were sent to ghettos and labour camps, few of who survived. And this was the "preferential" treatment the Brits got. The Chinese and other Asians got far, far worse.

What an incredible example of Olympic quality mental gymnastics.

This is amazing news! Really glad render textures are now available.
trekky1700··on Google is buying the entire '.app' domain for a Whopping $25M
Google is buying the TLD, not all the subdomains under it. They will then have control over the namespacing for the TLD and be able to distribute subdomains as they see fit. This is how most TLDs work because "app" itself is a domain, not just an extension.
trekky1700··on Show HN: Meet me, I'll buy you coffee
I'd love to take you up on this, but I'm afraid I'm thousands of "Miles" away.

Sorry I had to.

Nice Rick and Morty site on your portfolio!

There was also this news article from just before reports of the plane crashing arose. I noticed it this morning right away because they were in the same area at the same time on the same day.

trekky1700··on Plant Breeders Release First 'Open Source Seeds'
I definitely don't propose we ban research. Genetic modification is the future in many areas. But patenting the genes and being allowed to restrict the use of organisms containing those genes is lunacy. Especially at this point, where genetic code isn't actually being created, so much as it's being taken from on species and spliced into another. The equivalent of me taking paragraphs from different books, putting them into sections of another book, and claiming it to be my original work.

We live in a world where doctors can withhold the information on a patients death during a gene therapy treatment due to the genes being proprietary information. There have even been cases were doctors have patented specific genetic information from their patients, unbehest to them during treatments.

It's all a fine, fine line.

trekky1700··on Plant Breeders Release First 'Open Source Seeds'
I think this is bad, not because I don't like open source other things, but the patenting and commercialization of genes is something that we cannot permit. Establishing the difference between regular seeds and open source seeds is a step in the wrong direction, as there should never be a time that that distinction is necessary.

"However, to improve things further, we provided an over-the-air software update a few months ago to increase the default ground clearance of the Model S at highway speeds, substantially reducing the odds of a severe underbody impact."

That is just so cool.

trekky1700··on Minecraft creator says he’s canceled talks for Oculus Rift version
This is going to be just like how Facebook ruined Instagram and WhatsApp. Oh, wait. They didn't. I'm quite certain, based on Facebook's history, that they'll let Oculus be their own thing, and we'll enjoy the benefit of Oculus being injected with huge amounts of funds.
trekky1700··on Facebook acquires Oculus VR
Luckily, the tech exists and the market is proven such that if Facebook fucks this up, someone else will come in and replace them.

If Facebook stays hands off and just infuses them with billions of dollars and massive resources, we could see something amazing come out of this. I'm still cheering for Oculus, and I trust the team and John Carmack to create an awesome product, regardless.

trekky1700··on How are cold-calling ceasefires illegal?
You're neglecting the fact that not every "poaching" attempt is successful and the fact that companies like Google have an incentive to keep salaries high in order to prevent poaching.
trekky1700··on Nvidia releases $3000 Titan Z
I think the main purpose it serves for Nvidia is branding. This gets plastered all over the tech news and everyone knows Nvidia makes the fastest GPU. People then associate them with better technology (for better or worse).

Why someone would buy it? There are a lot of people who want the very best. It's the same reason people buy an Aston Martin over a Toyota.

From a more practical perspective though, there's also future proofing. This card will be able to deliver high frame rates for a few generations of games. People who don't want to regularly rebuild their rigs might prefer this card.

trekky1700··on Nvidia releases $3000 Titan Z
The point of this card is there are some people who want both.
trekky1700··on How are cold-calling ceasefires illegal?
So you're saying other companies offering tech workers high salaries will lower their salaries? I think you're missing the point.
trekky1700··on How are cold-calling ceasefires illegal?
Essentially, think of the reason for Google to want this. They essentially want to keep their engineers with them for a lower price while preventing other companies from offering more attractive positions/salaries which would mean either Google would have to match the salary, or they'd lose the engineer.

A lot of hires and promotions are made through these sorts of offers. Steve Jobs famously courted John Sculley from Pepsi. Do you think Marissa Mayer applied for her role at Yahoo?

These sort of agreements restrict the market and are unfair to engineers.

trekky1700··on Bonjour, Entrepreneurs – Only you can prevent French-Bashing
It's unusual that I stick up for the bloody French, but as far as the health insurance goes with "infection statistics" there are about 4,000 preventable deaths in France due to nosocomial infections in "public hospitals", compared to nearly 100,000 in the United States private system. France's infection rates are pretty in line with the rest of the world's developed countries.
