If anyone needs tips on recording silence check out Quora (https://www.quora.com/How-do-I-record-complete-silence).

travisl12··on An overdose,drug-fueled parties: The secret life of USC med school dean
It does not. It refers only to prescriptions for asthmas inhalers to treat burned throats from smoking various drugs.
travisl12··on How Fear and Outrage Are Sold for Profit
I've been feeling that most "news" outlets these days (for a while?) seem like propaganda. But I think I realize now that this propaganda feeling is just a side-effect from trying to sell shit.
travisl12··on Dev Bootcamp Shutting Down
I hear that, I remember being asked if I was planning on sticking around to teach at DBC and feeling inadequate at the thought of it. Mentoring perhaps made sense...

BTW I finished in 2013 as well (Pocket Gophers SF!).

travisl12··on Salt Ponds of the San Francisco Bay
Back in the day I was an acoustic engineer and as part of an EIR (environment impact report) that is needed for the development of one of the salt marshes we had to go out on the salt pond levy's and setup sound level meters.

Two take aways from spending time out on the salt ponds.

1) They smell really really bad.

2) The soil is still very wet even in areas that look like solid ground. I nearly lost a shoe when my foot sank into this deep muck.

Moral of the story: better to view these ponds from afar.

travisl12··on The vision of nuclear holocaust in Threads (1984) remains visceral and urgent
Agreed. I avoid the box where I have the DVD of "Threads" still.
travisl12··on How do you make programmers work 60-80 hours per week?
That is so awesome... you have a door?!?
travisl12··on One in five of us may 'hear' flashes of light
No, it's definitely real sounds. Generally pipes or creaking staircases.
travisl12··on One in five of us may 'hear' flashes of light
I'm actually the opposite. In that I see flashes of light when I hear sounds (when my eyes are closed in a dark place). Happens all the time when I'm laying in bed before I fall asleep at night.
travisl12··on All Dressed Up for Mars and Nowhere to Go
We are no where near ready to go to Mars.

What would the impact on the public's psyche be if this mission failed by means of a torturously slow death of the crew? I think it'd be a huge setback for any sort of space exploration to witness fellow humans triumphantly land on Mars and then watch it all fall apart and the crew perishes tragically (being optimistic enough to say they actually land safely).

I bet the Apollo program would have ended much sooner if Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin never made it off of the Moon.

I have always thought as Cmd. Hadfield stated, that we have to go to the Moon and get it right there first. Go to the Moon, get this space colonization thing figured out and then the conversation on heading to Mars can begin.

travisl12··on The Woman Behind Apple's First Icons
It's such a romantic story, the early days of Apple and the creation of the imagery that countless News Hacker readers grew up seeing.

I often think to myself "what a time that must have been!". But then I think to myself "I am living in that time right now!". We are always able to start our own romantic story that will be told in the years to come.

Let's go design!

travisl12··on The inexplicable rise of open floor plans in tech companies
As an Acoustic Consultant turned Developer I have to stress that from the perspective of "noise" alone, open plan offices are detrimental to concentration. I define concentration as time spent without interruptions.

Even the use of headphones, can in a sense, be a distraction. Music being played too loud creates stress in the body, and if you are trying to listen to music to drown out a busy office then chances are you are not increasing concentration by much (if any).

As an Acoustician I visited many tech open plan offices who wanted to hear suggestions on quieting down conversations, and phones ringing. And I always laughed to myself at this because the best suggestion is to build walls! Cubicles help, but generally only the kind with the 6-8ft walls.

As a developer these days, I honestly feel that working from home can be much more productive than the office because it is peace and quiet.

Quiet is good for me as a developer.

travisl12··on Ison: The comet of the century
Yeah, I'd really like to see articles start making profound statements once the comet becomes a spectacle. Until then, let's just say "Hey a Comet is in the Neighborhood!".
