> EAC supports Linux, but by doing so you're disabling a number of security features since you're making the anti-cheat run entirely in userspace.

I see I was assuming EAC is EAC, but it seems there is a difference between the kernel mode version (windows) and the client mode version (linux). There are different assurances and therefore not the same security can be guaranteed.

In that case it can indeed be that the assurances on linux are not sufficient. However I think the EAC marketing or documentation is a bit unclear/misleading around this issue.

Still I think they should offer the game for the customers on linux, though maybe they are not allowed in the competitive lobbies?

However you can implement it. There are several options but probably you'll want to do it server side since I believe most bots don't run javascript. If you search there are ways to implement something similar in nginx using modules or buildins.

How did you spin up the self-hosted instance?

Seems the self-hosting documentation is a bit... lacking. Both "self-hosting" buttons on the main page send me to "#".

It seems interesting, even though I'm more of the roll your own school of thought here because there could be some very sensitive data in this system.

This is funny since they are literally using "Easy Anti Cheat" and that fully supports Linux.

From what I understand Easy Anti Cheat, makes it very easy for developers to run on Linux, basically it is a compile setting to support it. It is one of the anti-cheat providers that had decent Linux support since the beginning.

Back before Proton and when it was new developers often denied requests for turning on Linux support, however this is the first time I head a developer actively turning it off.

I think it speaks volumes of their intent that the game is to be "fully removed from the Linux platform", and they won't offer the single player experience or non competitive experience for Linux based customers.

On top of that it seems to me they tried sneaking this statement in an announcement titled "Ranked FAQ". This shows they have no respect for their customers.

trashb··on “I just chose words carefully”
I would argue that limitations, forced or arbitrary lead to more interesting (and perhaps in the end more useful) products.

In the GDC 2016 talk "8 Bit & '8 Bitish' Graphics-Outside the Box" by Mark Ferrari he mentions something similar. (paraphrasing) "If you can make anything you like (with modern Photoshop) you won't need to stop to consider the core of your idea." A lot of our thoughts are not as original as we like to believe and constraints can push your to consider your ideas and designs from another perspective leading to better understanding or design of the core concept. Often because the ideal path to realizing your idea is not available so you will have to reconsider the need or how to creatively implement something that approaches your desired outcome.

Now the GDC talk is about pixel art but the same is true in writing or any creative process (for example painting or coding). Famously some writers limit their selves to typewriters, for example George Orwell or Matty Healy.

Yea these AI bots are getting out of hand.

The article mentions that some requested pages are less likely to be legit traffic (old commits) and more likely to have bot activity. Perhaps they could increase difficulty on those pages for the proof of work. Keeping the "current" at a lower difficulty allows most normal users to use the pages as normal, while penalizing the bots.

One other way I have been thinking of is just delay the delivery of the pages, either limit bandwidth or just wait for a bit until you deliver the page. For one user a (lets say max)3s delay on some pages is not a huge deal, however at scale that adds up and means the client can't gather other pages in the meantime.

Another option is to lock the out of date html renderings behind a login page while keeping the git openly available.

trashb··on It's Not the End of Programming
I suppose the author is pointing at the fact that coding != programming. The term "programming" is wider applicable than just in relation with computers.

Though I don't quite agree with the analogy. To me it seems more like the difference between writing with pen & paper or typing, digital vs analog drawing or printing press vs photo copier. There are some significant changes in how to use the tool properly (can't backspace/undo on physical). However the essence of writing a good story is not in the typing/penning it transcends that. At the same time it is true that different individuals may produce better output with one or the other due to personal preferences or adapting a different creative process.

Don't reinvent the wheel PHPBB, MyBB and others are still updated.

I hate the closed web purely for disrupting archiving efforts, you can add chat apps like discord, whatsapp, zoom and teams in that list as well. As a lot of communities have moved there.

I've thought about this as well but I was not too comfortable with it.

As I understand it it is a reverse tunnel from your internal network to cloudflare? If your device is compromised it may lead to an attacker using that tunnel to access your internal network through the host device?

trashb··on Show HN: I wrote a BASIC interpreter that boots on UEFI machines
This is great! Allowing anyone to program like it is the 1980s and bring them back to their hardware somewhat. I think it will also find it's way to the permacomputing crowd since UEFI is so ubiquitous these days it may be a good platform for that can offer modern features with a understandable interface.
trashb··on The treasury bond mess: is this the demise of the US as a safe haven?
> But he carried a buffet of them

You could argue that the buffet was so large that combined with confirmation bias people often didn't see or believe the statements at the other side of the buffet. Allowing the convincing of opposite groups to both offer support.

This is very different from "traditional" politics where often one group is supported and the other fought.

I mentioned it before, see the following comment https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47749916

You can also use a custom difftool or mergetool that understand your formats. For example Beyond Compare https://www.scootersoftware.com/kb/moreformats

trashb··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
I agree that something has to be done about kids on socials. But perhaps we can start with not punishing anyone by default and punishing offenders instead.

I don't see legally why a checkbox "not underage" isn't enough, as long as the rules are actually enforced and the people ticking that box while underage are punished appropriately. Instead of denying access to all unless proven above a certain age.

trashb··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
Because otherwise they can not serve alcohol. This is the law because alcohol is an addictive substance and more addictive if interacted with in younger years as your brain is not fully developed. And "we" as a society deem alcohol consumption problematic as it is associated with risks for other societal participants, like drunk driving accidents and domestic violence. Similarly why you can't enter a casino underage.

The underage crowd can't enter a space that is specifically exists for experiencing the prohibited behavior. Where the internet is a more general space and we are restricting anyone that has not proven to be adult. And what are we restricting them from? Posting/publishing & accessing content, that sounds like age based censorship.

Would someone underage have less rights to receive or publish unpleasant/controversial topics under the First Amendment? I think you need to have a very strong case to undermine those rights and I just don't think "might protect the kids" (which is debatable) is strong enough.

trashb··on To save C, we must save ABI (2022)
> Personal pet theory

This is actually how c grew up. This is also one of the reasons why the spec is quite ambiguous in certain locations. C is made to be easily portable not a universal codebase for all platforms (though you can get quite close with some tricks like macros). Remember the spec allows C to run on a Unisys 1100/2200 just as well as on a pdp-11.

I may be to embedded for this but if you want your code to handle long long as int64_t use <stdint.h>. I am of the opinion that you should always use fixed width types as portable types are a huge footgun and kind off redundant.

Especially when you start doing a little more complex things expecting them to work exactly the same, like 128bit values on a 64bit platform.

trashb··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
I think the difference is that in China the public are aware of the policies and they know how it will affect them if they say something dangerous. This keeps the power in check in a way since they can mostly only act on policies they have made clear before. In the US there is a false sense of freedom which makes the reasoning of power opaque and unchecked.

> others still need protection at 16

Other still need protection at 30, or in fact in my opinion also a lot of people above 50 (that didn't grow up with the internet around) are not prepared for what is out there. Also there are parents that are "underage". Those are not considered either.

I agree it is a very arbitrary limit indeed, but it seems there is no other good proxy so for a lot of people it will be choosing the best worst option, at least that is how the argument in favor is brought forward.

> No ID checks at clubs, bars, or other adults-only venues.

Those are mostly there because of alcoholic drinks being served and the venue wants to create a certain atmosphere. There are plenty of parents that would take their kids there if they could.

The rest is not just there for kids but also for adults (or elderly).

There is a bunch of adults who would step in a hole in the ground or fall off a balcony.

trashb··on Parsers don't have to be complicated
> html tags don’t need to be closed

That's a very explicit and much debated feature, even self closing tags. It is also one of the main factors that makes HTML distinct from xml. And a big reason why xhtml was created.

I agree that it makes for a much more complicated interpretation.

trashb··on Learn how chips are made with this Rollercoaster Tycoon-inspired animation
I always thought it came from the Japanese school rating system, where the concept was transferred to the west through the medium of games. I was under the impression that this system preceded the creation of video games but I can not find a reference for that.

In Japan the "S" is explained as shū (秀) "Exemplary, excellent".

trashb··on Quake – 30th Anniversary Update
For anyone checking out and liking the anniversary updates, I would like to point out there have been some very high quality mods and map packs released the last couple of years.

It's worth to check them out if you want to enjoy a little quake renascence. For example the Quake Brutalist Jam packs and more. They can be found on your favorite quake distribution site like slipseer or quaddicted.

trashb··on Critical CVE issued for hallucinated SQLite vulnerability
Could be just me but I would be quite careful running these PoC's, especially since the CVE's mostly seem nonsensical. I suppose these CVE's could be targeting some kind of PoC execution instead of actual bug reporting? (I didn't look at the code in depth).

Why is the repo even mixing CVE's for "schreibfaul1 ESP32-audioI2S" and "SQLite"? Is mixing CVE's for different products in one repo common practice?

> 60 fps is a pest

I agree. Even for gaming just the fps is misinformed. It doesn't account for latency and is kind of a arbitrary limit that became industry standard.

Consider a 60fps or 144fps stream can still be out of sync for example you might have experienced watching the same video stream on two different devices and one is more ahead compared to the other while both are the same framerate (one having higher latency from the source).

24fps is good for most real video, animations even dial back to way less animating on 4s, 3s or 2s is common practice. However while gaming you may want higher fps (usually corresponds to lower latency) to allow you to respond in a timely fashion mostly because our brains are quite slow. For embedded applications even if there is movement it should never ever need a 60fps source.

trashb··on The case for MUDs in modern times (2018)
I'm not sure I understand correctly, muds are text based but not file based. But there are several mud clients available with different features. Most include an auto mapper for example, you can connect through different specialized protocols to your favorite mud server.

Example clients: Mudlet, zMUD, kMUD, mushclient

trashb··on The case for MUDs in modern times (2018)
Indeed, text and graphics are different styles and there are pro's and con's to either one. Similar to how some people enjoy ps1 style games over "modern graphics". One of the major pro's for text based games is accessibility.

It's in a way comparable to the difference between a novel and a movie or a novel and a comic/manga.

Really before the term MMO was coined these type of games where called "graphical MUDs"

Also Runescape started as "DeviousMUD".

Neverwinter, Runescape, Tibia, Ultima online, Everquest and more all formed from MUD lineage.

trashb··on The Future Worth Building Is Human
> E.g. I'm sure we are generally less skilled in mental arithmetic since the advent of the calculator, but it has allowed us to solve vastly more complex problems in the end.

This is like saying we have been getting a lot worse at walking since the advent of the car but it has allowed us to practice global trade in the end.

Yes cars are a part of the solution but there are a lot more factors at play.

A calculator does not do math, a calculator (and computer) calculates or computes. The math is the study and understanding of the problem space (and the problem solving) that the human is doing behind the calculator.

"solve vastly more complex problems" the calculator has accelerated this but it is not really a cause effect relation. The advancements in the understanding of the complex problems could've also happened without calculators and the computation could have been done instead (for example) with 1000 people in a bunker.

From what I can gather from the linked discussion it was started as a pull request or a issue and was transferred to a discussion later. Perhaps some data was lost there? If you expand the comments fully there is also mention of a nuked merge request, I assume it was related to this text.

Edit it was not visible from the discussion link but it is visible from the issue link below. Also it seems to be transferred over from a totally different repo?
