trackofalljades··on Provenance: iOS and tvOS multi-emulator front end
I don't recommend this, sadly. It's a very neat project, but once you manage to navigate the "signing" and get it onto your Apple TV, the cache which contains all the games and saved states can be purged at any time after a couple days and there's really no way to make it stick. It works admirably well, but is definitely no replacement for something like a dedicated emu box.

I thought Monopoly only used a single six-sided die, why are they rolling two of them?

The proportion of pickup trucks (especially the light duty ones) that are purchased as "lifestyle" products rather than for utility use is probably significantly higher than 80%, if that were measured honestly.

Facebook suspended President Trump following the mob attack on Congress. But the platform allowed organizing for the pro-Trump rally, as well as the spread of conspiracy theories and militant extremism that drove the rioters.

Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg made headlines for saying the mob attack on the U.S. Capitol was “largely organized” on other platforms, suggesting Facebook had done better than others at taking down dangerous content.

Not only is that assertion false, according to research by the Tech Transparency Project (TTP), but it ignores the fact that Facebook spent the past year allowing election conspiracies and far-right militia activity to proliferate on its platform, laying the groundwork for the broader radicalization that fueled the Capitol insurrection in the first place.

trackofalljades··on Facebook’s Campaign Against Apple Is Against Users and Small Businesses
I’m getting so tired of Facebook and this new blame game they’re playing with Apple incenses me...felt this EFF writeup worthy of sharing, especially this bit:

“ Facebook claims that this change from Apple will hurt small businesses who benefit from access to targeted advertising services, but Facebook is not telling you the whole story. This is really about who benefits from the normalization of surveillance-powered advertising (hint: it’s not users or small businesses), and what Facebook stands to lose if its users learn more about exactly what it and other data brokers are up to behind the scenes.”

trackofalljades··on EXoDOS: Collecting every game developed for DOS from original media
Is there a reason this needs to exist, as opposed to the massive collections already congealing at The Internet Archive? Is there some deficiency in those collections that makes this superior?

trackofalljades··on The Walkman, Forty Years On
I recently had an opportunity to check out a drive-in movie theatre, and was very excited at the idea until I remembered that the FM radio in our car was messed up (we never use it). I dug through the garage and found my old Walkman still in a pile of high school stuff. Cleaned it up, installed batteries, cycled the volume rheostat until it was cleaned up and the static stopped...and POOF perfect FM radio again! I brought headphones and had a great time.
trackofalljades··on Lemmy, an open-source federated Reddit alternative, gets funding for development
The situation on /r/canada is heartbreaking. Over recent weeks, almost every attempt to post a news article involving civil rights or anything overtly related to Black, LGBTQ+ or Indigenous issues has been immediately zeroed down, and in many cases then removed by a mod (their favourite method is to just hit the "dupe" button on all posts about a given news item or opinion piece, claiming they're all dupes, and not leaving one up).

If you make the mistake of discussing this on any other Canadian related sub where the /r/canada mods frequent, they'll ban you for life and say that you were "brigading."

trackofalljades··on Use of Mussels to Improve Water Quality in Reflecting Pool [pdf]
TLDR: It can be calculated based on the clearance rates found in this study that enough E. complanata mussels to clear the entire 6.5 acre Constitution Gardens Reflecting Pool in one month clearing constantly at 40.5ml/mussel/hr would be: 6.8 acre-feet x 1,233,482 liters/acre-foot x 2.75 ft depth = 23.1 x 106 liters divided by 744 hours/month x 40.5 ml/hr/mussel = 766,678 mussels. This would be 99,515 lb of mussels, average weight 59 gm. Similar calculations for C. fluminea give 307,409 clams or 7,033 lb of clams. Although the proposal to use native mussels as a clearing agent for the Constitution Gardens Reflecting Pool is admirable and ecologically friendly, it would be a formidable amount of molluscs to collect and distribute in the Reflecting Pool as well as probably affect the sources in local rivers. The suggestion was good but the implementation is not advised.
trackofalljades··on All ProtonVPN apps are now open source and audited
This is a very good move on their part, and they have a great no-logs policy, but they do still restrict p2p in some countries which is a bummer for some potential users.
trackofalljades··on A billion medical images are exposed online
This was my immediate thought at the headline, doctors-who-what-now?

This feels informed from the technology side, and profoundly ignorant of how health care IT actually works (especially in the United States).

trackofalljades··on Harvesting LinkedIn data for fun and profit
I don't really understand the author's claim that...

trackofalljades··on Facebook has been granted patent on shadow banning
In its most basic understood form, dating well back to before the term was coined, this functionality existed in BBS software in the 1980s...it sure as hell predated anything Facebook ever developed.

trackofalljades··on Americans Greatly Overestimate U.S. Gay Population
Is it possible that what you're seeing in this data is less about inaccuracy and more about how comfortably out people are?

It says the estimates skew greater for younger people and women responding. Well are younger people and women more likely to know which of their friends are LGBT, because of a host of societal reasons that tend to influence men or older folks to wall off their feelings and communicate less about such things?

I'm just saying, having lived in more than a dozen locations in five states and a Canadian province for the past several decades, the 4.5% number feels low to me (as in, impossibly so).

trackofalljades··on Gun laws where guns take the most lives
I believe Canada and Mexico both have more guns per capita than the USA does, but one has less gun violence than the USA and the other has more...feel free to look it up and double check me on that though my brain is rusty and I think I last looked into it around Y2K.
trackofalljades··on Why emergency braking systems sometimes hit parked cars and lane dividers
Ever been in a Tesla? The current system requires you to keep your hands on the wheel, and they always have. In fact there are YouTube videos of idiots showing how they use clamps and other defeat devices to take their hands off the wheel, which the car is inherently designed NOT to let you do.

trackofalljades··on Taking Children Seriously
"Obedience and rules are bad."

Yeah, okay, um...I really really really don't want to have to be around these families in a public space then. There's nothing more obnoxious than trying to raise my own munchkins to be well behaved while hipster spawn are being disrespectful, selfish, and loud as hell with their parents cheering them on (at the library, movie theater, grocery store, playground, etc).

trackofalljades··on A tale of two Canadas: Where you grew up affects your income in adulthood
There's plenty of "data to back that up," and the delta is getting bigger every year. Fire up any search engine or look on any reliable media source (doesn't have to be a Canadian one). They've even talked about it on CNN (if you consider that journalism).
trackofalljades··on The line is blurring between city and suburb
I'm really happy that everything they mention in this article is "dying," good riddance.
trackofalljades··on Apple, this time you made a mistake
FFS, they didn't remove the F-keys, you can still have F-keys if you want...and they made all the ports do everything. They removed the card reader. Whiny posts by people who didn't even pay attention are more annoying than Apple.
trackofalljades··on How Safe Is Tesla Autopilot?
TLDR for every piece written about this, it's still safer than a human driving alone, period. When used properly, it's vastly safer, and when used improperly, it's probably still safer but only just...the thing to consider is the kind of driver who's selfish and dumb enough to misuse this kind of thing is a high risk driver without it and would probably still be worse.
trackofalljades··on How Safe Is Tesla Autopilot?
I think maybe you don't understand what autopilot actually does on a plane...but regardless I agree it was a dumb name that made sense to engineers but should have been shot down immediately by marketing and legal.
