trackofalljadeson Turn off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 and get its disk space back

Does anything like this exist for iOS, if you wanna nuke some AI crap you have no desire for and get some space back? My notebook is fine but my phone is painfully tight on storage.

trackofalljadeson Why do people believe true things?

They're trying to say that they've never studied philosophy, or perhaps even discrete mathematics, and possibly that they don't understand the inherent value in breaking down and very methodically and rationally trying to explain ideas or answer questions that may seem "obvious."

trackofalljadeson Building the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (2014)

I dearly miss when there was an operating restaurant (and fishing pier) on one of the islands, such a special place to stop off on a family road trip and probably gone forever in a post-9/11, post-COVID world. Being allowed to stop in the middle of the bridge tunnel was so cool and I hate that we might never be allowed to again.

Make sure you stop at Stingray's! We drive a very similar route annually and it's amazing (super fun place for kids too).

trackofalljadeson Show HN: I made an app people call "Airdrop for Android"

Hey, if you don't mind a question...I need to help a friend back up all the photos off an Android phone and have had a lot of difficulty doing it on my Mac for the reasons you've stated. I do have a Windows notebook at work, are you saying if I plug the Android phone into a ThinkPad, it will just show up like a drive and let me copy photos?

It's critical that the photos (thousands of them) keep their original EXIF data and filesystem dates, and the methods I've found to get them onto my Mac don't accomplish this.

Thanks for any advice!

trackofalljadeson Mark Twain at Stormfield (1909) [video]

Thank you, good heavens...the other video is awful by comparison, besides just needing cleanup and being terribly compressed it was horizontally backwards and played at the wrong framerate (so common with silent film).

trackofalljadeson Privacy Nightmare on Wheels’: Every Car Brand Reviewed by Mozilla

I read the whole thing, wondered how any of this could be possible, and then realized "oh, this is about that stupid expensive monthly service thing I don't use." Neither of my Subaru's is transmitting anything to anywhere. They're just GPS (and FM radio) receivers.

I mean, yes, the terms are insane, but I'd also never agree to a silly monthly subscription Internet/entertainment/whatever thing from a car company. I'd never even pay for Sirius.

trackofalljadeson The DeLorean Alpha

It's sad to see the word "Delorean" go the way of the word "Atari," divorced forever from the magic or mystery or mad genius of its original story, repurchased and repurposed to sell vapor to the nostalgic or underinformed.

trackofalljadeson We Are Not Adults Just Because We Say So

If it smells like MRA whistling...

trackofalljadeson We Are Not Adults Just Because We Say So

Yeah, I mean, that's true, and also...the statement is false.

All government originally started out as theocracy, and the "traditional definition" of marriage is a union for the purpose of exchanging property (as women were generally regarded) sanctioned by the local religious leader, who had absolute power.

trackofalljadeson Are you nice or kind?

While the word choice feels awkward, what the author is trying to say about generalized east coast culture versus generalized west coast culture is SPOT ON. I've lived in five states, on an island, and outside the USA as well, and I would absolutely use these kinds of examples to differentiate NYC from LA, or Philly from Seattle, etc. Most of the mid-west and southern Ontario fall into this "east coast" cultural norm as well (even more extremely on the kindness side).
