Nobody gets promoted for building open-source software at corpos. It is allowed, at best, not condoned. So what manager is going to go for this? Let's dedicate our limited resources to gratuitous goodwill work. Carrer suicide, I expect. Unfortunately.
Why should it be? The world is more complex and nuanced than "Nazis bad". Yes, they were horrible and despicable. They still enacted some effective policies, and many of them were socialist in nature.
Well, that was an outcome of losing the world war, not their socialist policies. I'm not sure the two can be separated, maybe you could imagine the Nazis but without starting world wars.
I agree, we must look at disgusting things and understand them if we truly wish not to end up in the same place again. It's really sad to see I was flagged, downvoted, and somebody called me a white supremacist. Ironically exactly the kind of dogmatism that allows fascist ideology to take root.
Well, you certainly got a combative tone. I don't care if it's 8:45 or 9:45, it is what it is. You don't get more or fewer hours of sun, it's dark when you go to work, it's dark when you get home from work. With DST. Noon at noon is pretty much what the time zones are aiming for, yes.
> One example of this occurred circa 2013-08-30 on the canonical repository for the Fossil DVCS. In that event, file descriptor 2 (standard error) was being erroneously closed (by stunnel, we suspect) prior to sqlite3_open_v2() so that the file descriptor used for the repository database file was 2. Later, an application bug caused an assert() statement to emit an error message by invoking write(2,...). But since file descriptor 2 was now connected to a database file, the error message overwrote part of the database.
Kind of crazy that this is an issue in modern operating systems. There are just so many ways to avoid this obvious footgun of an API design. stdin/out/err should be reserved file descriptors. In fact, why reuse file descriptors at all? Just count up.
No, it is intended for a small band of places where the latitude is big enough to make winter and summer daytime length significantly different, but not so different that DST does nothing. In Sweden, with DST, the sunrise is at 4am in summer and 8am in winter. Just set it so noon is actually noon.
I can see the DST argument for people where the shift kinda sorta works out, but many places (like Anchorage!) it's completely unnecessary. I live in Sweden and it's just the twice annually "ah shit the clock moved overnight."
Interesting point about class signaling, but it doesn't explain Peppa Pig (or Bluey) showing a more healthy approach to teaching emotional regulation. The English certainly value that same kind of behavior after all.
Kids learn really fast that they can't just act out with their peers for fear of rejection by the group. It's extremely strong and parents need to teach the other half of it, dealing with negative emotions WITHOUT acting out. I feel like DT does a disservice here.
I mean Daniel Tiger in general just makes me cringe, it's just so extremely American. Absolutely zero stakes, all problems are resolved perfectly within literal seconds. Nothing is left "unfinished", never dares to leave the conflict unresolved for any meaningful amount of time. It's just such a stark contrast to, say, Peppa Pig, where the message is basically always some form of "shit is going to happen, find ways to deal with it." In DT, it is more of a papering over. Almost gaslighting. DT is not allowed to be upset that his birthday cake gets completely smashed? What? That is a healthy and normal response.
You _can_ legislate it _out_ of existence though. The competence is there, no doubt. Just not the complete disregard for copyright law that is step 1 of training an LLM. Rules for thee but not for me, classic colonialism. The EU is so intertwined with the US that even Trump isn't enough to force a clean break.
On the other hand, the Anthropic models often try to justify shortcuts and incorrect results. Often feels like gaslighting. It's like that recent meme,
boss: Were you in the project meeting yesterday?
employee: Yes!
boss: Really, because the project lead said you were not?
employee: You're right to push back on that. I was not there.
I very rarely use my personal laptop. I stream on my phone, if I want a bigger screen, I either cast or use the app on the TV. So for me it's work laptop and two phones, not bad at all for the peace of mind. I literally turn off work. I used to run mixed, and I really wish I had changed earlier.
GDPR doesn't mandate cookie banners, it says that you simply cannot store irrelevant PII for the sake of it. That's the point of it: to protect the privacy of the public against "data brokers" and other scum. You're welcome.
People seem to have forgotten, but cookie banners were a pest before GDPR. And newsletters and login popovers, those are GDPR?
Sweden does not have a car industry. The fighter jets are a different matter, very strong technical moat and need to prove the system in combat. You can't just start a fighter jet business.
I talked to a guy who did his doctoral degree on quantum computing and he was not worried at all. In fact he thought it was wildly overhyped, and like cold fusion, self driving cars, or string theory, always just around the corner. Just give us five more years and another grant, please.
