toxican··on Nintendo's secretive creative process
Won't somebody please think of the disgruntled edge case user who just wants an excuse to be bitter?
toxican··on Susan Kare designed the suite of icons that made the Macintosh revolutionary
It's a shame her Windows 3 icons aren't on there, I'd love to see those.
toxican··on FCC Issues Warning in Wake of Swarm's Unauthorized Launch
The ISS's changes like that though because it's constantly doing burns to keep it "afloat" an abandoned satellite in LEO is going to eventually just burn up in the atmosphere and have a much more consistent orbit. And if it's not abandoned, then there should be _someone_ keeping tabs on where it's otherwise what's the point of it being up there?
toxican··on Apple Plans to Use Its Own Chips in Macs from 2020, Replacing Intel
Probably too early to tell, but I'd imagine this will mark the death of the Hackintosh? It's a shame, because I had a lot of fun hunting down all of the information and files I needed to convert one of my old PC's over.
toxican··on My daughter's disabled. Please don't look away from her
For me it's usually an attempt to not come across as staring. A lot of people grow up hearing "don't stare!" when it comes to people who look different because it's rude. So it's really hard for me to shake that. I don't look away because I'm weirded out by a person or because I think less of them. It's because I don't want my initial glance to be mistaken a stare. It's ironic that apparently that can come across as rude as well. Then again I'm socially awkward and struggle to make eye-contact with non-disabled folks just as much.
toxican··on Blocklist Facebook domains
I've got a RaspberryPi Zero (WiFi via USB..ugh). Would that be too slow for DNS, or would having my DNS server be local vs remote negate that slow interface?
toxican··on FTC Probing Facebook for Use of Personal Data, Source Says
Fear not citizen, it'll be put to use by the same government that's actively working to dismantle consumer protections.
toxican··on Ex-Facebook insider says covert data harvesting was routine
This doesn't even strike me as crazy or "out there" anymore, which is so sad.
toxican··on Ex-Facebook insider says covert data harvesting was routine
To me, calling it a breach is Facebook's attempt at passing the buck. Getting breached alleviates some responsibility for what happened. Maybe not in reality, but in how it's portrayed in the media and how it's understood by laymen it absolutely does.
toxican··on Ex-Facebook insider says covert data harvesting was routine
The average person is incredibly naive with regards to what the cost of a "free service" like Facebook is. It's not until you start looking at people who are in related fields that you start seeing people who truly understand the costs.

The public waking up to this breach and the costs being exposed are probably a huge part of why the stock is dropping. Facebook's continued profitability and success is dependent on its users not understanding how their data is being used. And now "everyone" knows, so the secret is out and hopefully Facebook can't get away with this going forward.

toxican··on Mozilla working on in-page popup blocker for Firefox
"Seriously, who decides to employ those dialogs?"

Usually some out of touch marketing, SEO, advertising, etc. person. Most web developers aren't the decision makers in situations like this.

toxican··on The Mystery of the Slow Downloads
Meanwhile I've had Comcast residentually for about a year now without any noticed outages. At work we've got a local ISP (who we actually do design work for!) and our internet goes down once or twice a week at least.

There's really no point in saying a nationwide company is reliable or not because it's incredibly region-specific. At home I've never had connection issues, I generally get the speeds I pay for, and I've never had any billing issues. But you ask someone who lives 100 miles in any direction with Comcast and they'll have a completely different story.

toxican··on U.S. Charges 13 Russians, 3 Companies for Interfering with Election
Wow that is a gross misunderstanding of United States v. Alvarez you've got there. All that did was invalidate the "Stolen Valor Act" which made lying about earned military medals a crime. Obama signed a similar law the following year which made it illegal to lie about military medals for personal gain. So far that hasn't been challenged as unconstitutional, despite both bills being about lying about military medals. It's almost like the context and intent of the lie matters more than the lie itself.... If you want to construe this as a get out of jail free card for lying in every situation (to the FBI, etc.), I'm going to need to see that held up in court, citing that case as precedent.

If you're going to drag a man through the mud with wild conspiracy theories, at least learn how to spell his name--It's Mueller, with an "e". I'm really not sure how you think this constitutes the government deciding what is true/false. They're charged with attempting to manipulate the election, committing lots of fraud, etc., but oddly enough not for daring to speak untruths.

toxican··on U.S. Charges 13 Russians, 3 Companies for Interfering with Election
Which only goes to show that nobody is "safe". Their goal is to sow chaos and there's no better way to do that than to play both sides at every opportunity.
toxican··on Grumpy Cat wins payout in copyright lawsuit
I don't know, it worked really well in Office Space. Potentially too well.
toxican··on Fuze for Nintendo Switch: An easy-to-learn text-based programming language
When I was in middle school, there was this free web host I found[1] that gave you a small amount of storage and allowed you to load in templates and build your site with a WYSIWYG editor. Anyway, the homepage features a single text field where you type in what your website's subdomain would be (eg, website.20megsfree.com). For years that lone little text field was really exciting to me. With a few key presses and a click of the mouse I could create _anything_ on the internet (as far as 13yo me thought anyway!). And it was up to me to decide what went on the internet.

Mine's a different example, but I know exactly what you mean. It was my first opportunity to make a place of my own on a website and almost 20 years later I'm a web developer and the feeling that website gave me had a lot to do with me getting where I am.

I missed the generation of computers where writing BASIC was just a part of owning one. I think it's a shame that writing code isn't a more integral part of life, but I understand why it isn't anymore.

toxican··on Rubbish (2002)
Seems like an incredibly blurry, ill-defined concept though. Even if my garbage can is "on the street", it's still a foot away from the street and firmly on my property. How is that any different than breaking into a storage container around back or elsewhere on my property? Is it considered to be "on the street" when it's sitting on the side of my house, waiting for trash day?
toxican··on Rubbish (2002)
I think in this case it's best to attribute the quote and the Orwell attribution to Michael Scott and call it a day :)
toxican··on SymbOS: Graphical Z80 Multitasking Operating System
So could this be ported to anything with a Z80? Like, for example, a TI-83+ graphing calc?
toxican··on Chrome is Not the Standard
Despite the non-maliciousness of the easter egg, I do think the act of just installing an extension into a browser could be viewed as a trust-breaker. I think the other "controversies" are overblown, but them remotely installing an extension like that doesn't sit right with me.
toxican··on Chrome is Not the Standard
But if you've never seen the show all you saw was some sketchy extension appear in your extensions list with little to no explanation of why. Was my Mozilla account breached? Did some program installed on my computer auto-install an extension without me realizing? Am I sleep-installing extensions?

It was just weird and it freaked me out until I heard everyone else was losing their mind over it. I just really don't get what they were thinking.

toxican··on Chrome is Not the Standard
These are excuses, not valid technical reasons.
toxican··on SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket sets up at Cape Canaveral ahead of launch
There's a really good scene in Apollo 13 that shows this. Jim Lovell is giving a tour of the VAB and in the background you've got two of the stages coming together with a thud.
toxican··on I Know What You Download on BitTorrent
You may know what the countless other users of my VPN download, crafty website, but certainly not what I download.
toxican··on BlackBerry will shutter its app store on December 31st, 2019
Have you looked into keyboard cases for phones? Something thin like an iPhone + a relatively thin kb case can't be much thicker than your average smartphone with an otterbox.

edit: actually, now that I'm looking, they really only seem to exist for older iPhones (pre-6) :(

toxican··on BlackBerry will shutter its app store on December 31st, 2019
I switched to an iPhone because of this. I may not know everything that's going on behind the scenes with my phone, and I may not be able to tweak the hell out of it, but I do know that Apple's entire business isn't built around using personal info to sell ads. That's reason enough to stick with them if I really care about privacy/invasiveness. I'm sure they're not perfect either, but I just really do not trust Google anymore.
toxican··on Firefox is on a slippery slope
No, anyone who would discriminate or support discriminating against someone based on something as irrelevant as sexual orientation is a bigot. Got it?
toxican··on Microsoft Adds an OpenSSH Client to Windows 10
I think their point is that there's no point in trying to force Windows to behave like a Unix when you can just use a Mac or install/dualboot Linux. There are a lot of reasons (fascism-based IT department, can't afford a Mac, etc.), but it's a good point. Once I stopped trying to trick Windows into working like Linux and just freaking installed Linux, my workflow became SUPER smooth.
toxican··on Reddit is ready for advertisers, but are advertisers ready for Reddit?
The site already has ads. Sidebar ads, banner ads, ads that look like regular submissions to the site. Not to mention the more natural advertising that /r/hailcorporate likes to freak out about a lot.
toxican··on Reddit is ready for advertisers, but are advertisers ready for Reddit?
Critical, maybe, but I don't see rampant racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc. all over this site like I do on reddit. People are also generally a lot more snarky and sarcastic on reddit than they are here, which could be perceived as 'bullying' if you're just looking to have fun discussions.

But of course with reddit, it's 100% up to you to make it good. Find the right communities, ditch the wrong ones, and you're going to have a great time.
