toxicFork··on Ramstein air base in Germany experiences potential incoming missile scare
I guess once you detect a launch you start tracking systems and making guesses, if you see it heading towards a particular direction, alert anyone in that direction. Once you get a decent trajectory, alert more specifically.
toxicFork··on Ramstein air base in Germany experiences potential incoming missile scare
Possible technical question: how do people detect missile launches? Do they scan the skies? Do they have sound/vibration pattern detection? Satellites?

Update: In the article I see: "Still, we have no idea what early warning system triggered the alert. America's infrared early warning space-based sensing layer stares at the earth from many vantage points in orbit day and night. Historically, it provides the initial warning of a ballistic missile launch via detection of the missile's hot boost-phase plume. These satellites, especially the newer ones, can also detect a greater variety of infrared events, as well, including artillery fire, aircraft crashes, smaller missile shots, and even the launches of cruise missiles. "

People would rip the limiter out.

Or they would chip/crack it.

toxicFork··on Maybe we shouldn't want a fully decentralized web
I'd rather have them visible than underground. If the radicals can grow, it shows that there are problems that need to be addressed. Address their core problems using reasoning, no more reasons to be radical. It's better for everyone.
toxicFork··on Maybe we shouldn't want a fully decentralized web
I can empathize with not wanting to be involved with this anymore, which is fair enough, your choice, but there are solutions to the mentioned problems.

There are social or technical solutions to the problem of "too much free speech".

There can be decentralised filters set up that can be moderated by communities like democracy. You can have curators of content that can guarantee to bring safe and healthy content to you. You can have decentralised reputation, authority and reward systems for the content creators and the validators. And so on.

toxicFork··on Has the hidden matter of the universe been discovered?
> Today, scientists at the Institut d'Astrophysique Spatiale (CNRS/Université Paris-Saclay) may have detected, for the first time, this hidden matter through an innovative statistical analysis of 20-year-old data. Their findings are published on November 6, 2020 in Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Any links to the findings? Any search from me points of copies of the article rather than the source.

toxicFork··on Researchers discover new salivary glands in the human head
It was probably a joke. You know we're looking for the soul, right? Some say it's a part of the body. If this was the soul this would have made a lot of philosophers unhappy. Unfortunately it's just saliva. Maybe next time.

toxicFork··on We need physical audio kill switches
I was working as a video/audio engineer for a bit and for Bluetooth especially the latency is insane. For some devices it was around half a second. I don't think I have seen two seconds though. The main thing was that we would need to stream the audio first, wait for the latency duration, then start showing video frames. If you press pause, the audio would stop after that much time. I haven't checked if some devices allowed sending of start/stop commands through less latency methods though. My job was mainly concerned with playback.

Regarding this

> Undue pressure to accept an offer

Sometimes the recruiters may do this even the company may be cool about you taking your time. So don't take the recruiter's attitude being representative of the company.

Especially if it's a third party recruiter.

Just wanted to highlight this. Things like this is why I avoid PayPal as much as possible. For many years now.

toxicFork··on A Twist on Schrödinger's Cat Paradox
It's silly to take Schrödinger's Cat literally.

It's a convenience to explain states within equations. When you say "the cat is both alive and dead at the same time", you're simply saying "in this equation, do not assume that this variable will be one or zero, calculate the results for both conditions", and the final outcome will possibly be one of these calculated results.

The more such variables you have, the more different results you may get.

Eh, you can argue the same about people taking a bit of time off to relax, watch TV, play videogames, and yes, shitpost on HN, what's the difference? Let's take TV more specifically. I'd say that it may be better than watching TV, at the very least.
toxicFork··on Ending at-will employment: a better remedy for cancel culture?
Not only "for their political beliefs", though.

Even if you may not have one belief and you have made an "ok" symbol to say "ok", if someone takes a photo, and they pretty much paint you as someone with a particular political belief, because you made a particular gesture that could perhaps be linked to a political belief, you may lose your job.

That's cancel culture.

It's simply easier to just do what the mob says otherwise you will get overwhelmed, in terms of handling PR, to begin with, when they can easily say "This company supports someone with a political belief, boycott them". You may not have the funds to defend yourself, and the time you spent investigating the issue could be also the amount of sales you may lose. So the easiest way out for you is to simply let this person go.

toxicFork··on Google is facing a lawsuit for tracking people even when they opt out
This too is my assumption. Even if someone says "no it means the data is not collected", I would not be satisfied with an answer here, though. It's something very hard to prove one way or another.
toxicFork··on The economics of a VIP party
I recently watched an episode of Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories on Netflix, season 2 episode 4. It was featuring an ex-model in Tokyo who was invited to a VIP event where "rich CEOs" would attend. Very similar to what you described, in some ways. The episode also explores a bit about the personal aspect of that sort of life, but very lightly. It seems to be a thing in Tokyo, too.
toxicFork··on First Krita Beta for Android and ChromeOS in Play Store
Aw, it does not work well on mobile phones, because the dialogues are cropped and unscrollable. I am going to keep an eye on it though, some apps like sketchbook are somewhat working but they are limited. Having krita equivalent for the phone would be awesome.
